About 50 years I saw the movie in Lido theater Bangalore India --1970 since then I have seen about 50 times, still not satiated..I am so impressed that this movie has become part of my dna. My family members equally like it. Whosoever visited me at Bangalore, were taken to see the Movie, and they came out so awe struck. What an action by law abiding Marshall Gregory Peck and wily Omar Sharif. Film by film it is full of suspense, excitement, action and interest. In India it ran for more than 25 weeks in all metropolis theater in 1970s.I am yet to come across a similar movie. Much I wished to meet my favorite star Gregory Peck--could not fulfill.

Sankaran Subramaniam, thank you for your excellent comment. 👌
Mackenna's Gold is indeed one of the superb movies starring Gregory Peck. The Guns of Navarone is another superb movie starring Gregory Peck.

Thanks V for your response. Yes, Gregory Peck is an exceptional actor-the roles he chose are enlivening and model characters that others would like to follow. Mackenna the marshal is his monumental mega star performance. I can keep on adding ----

I live about 8 miles from this area. Most people that go to look for the Apache Gold known as the Peralta Mine end up getting cursed by the Apache Spirits and wind up ill and unable to continue.. It's protected and will never be found... If anyone deserved to find it it was Gregory Peck.. I loved this movie.. I saw it when I was about 9 years old.

Great movie.Saw it in '69 and several times thereafter. You just can't seem to have enough of it, especially the acting by Peck and Sheriff. Good story, good photography and excellent special effects. Guess this movie stands the test of time.

As far as Omar Sheriffs character trying to kill the last two... i say it was greed. When it comes to greed there is never enough to share. This is a teuely great film

I have been obsessed with this movie since I first saw it in 1967 or 8. It's a total mess, but the interplay between Mackenna and the other characters is fascinating. Also the movie captures the other-worldly nature of the Arizona-Utah canyonlands. The gods do speak to you there.

I agree...a perfectly beautiful movie...especially in wide screen viewing, which I saw in the theater in '69. And remember people,... this is a movie, for Gods' sakes...it's suppose to be pure escapism. That's what you go to the movies for!!!!Loved all the cameo parts in this picture...Edward G Robinson,Keene Wynn,Julie Newmar.."Lurch" from the Adams Family.

This scene was filmed (with many special effects) at Canyon de Chelly. You can walk this trail through the tunnel and down into the canyon, looking down on Spider Rock, which did not fall down!

Colombia's posters called it "the giant of a movie " . Released in 1969 it was a superhit all over India. And whenever it re-released it continued to do great business. But unfortunately the tide had turned for westerns and other films like these and MG turned out to be a flop all over the world; it managed to make money in only a few markets like India and Russia. The younger audience had now embraced a newer type of movie - small, gritty and realistic. An unknown independent movie was a hit that year and the cowboy films gradually faded away. But for a generation of Indians Mckennas Gold will always be the gold standard for action movies - who can forget Peck , Sharif , Savalas and the gang . Long live MG.

I'm sorry but our Navajo guide, Adam Teller showed us the famous tunnel and it does not lead into a canyon nor you can't see Spider Rock from there. At the end of the tunnel there is a wall of sandstone going up. I don't know exactly where you have been but our Navajo guide told us THAT is the tunnel they used for the movie. Spider Rock is further away from it.
By the way, I disagree that the movie is a mess.

Thanks. Really a giant of a movie. This movie was a blockbuster in India and also I believe in many other nations like Russia, Turkey and many parts of Africa. This movie was dubbed in Hindi and I don't know how many other Indian languages. Up until then no Hollywood movie in India gave any local Indian movie a run for the money like this movie did. About 40 years ago ( I vaguely recall) I saw this movie in Mumbai and I was really awestruck by the special effects as no Indian movie ( including the Indian epic Sholay) until then even came remotely close to such stunning effects like the earthquake scene etc. Actually, the earthquake scene was created in a small room with toy mountains, etc ( I read it in a magazine ).
This is a Hollywood movie but very curiously, this international hit was a flop in the U.S so much so that many Americans don't even know about the existence of this movie. This is as far as my information goes and I may be wrong. The movie was criticized very heavily by senior movie critics in America pointing to its technical flaws ( just imagine!) and gaps and gaffes in the logical progression of the movie, as a result, the movie was junked. Indeed, it appears there are some subtle logical fallacies in the storyline and the technical effects. Another interesting tidbit is that the makers of this movie were found to be men with leftist leanings and perhaps that too could have played into the unfortunate fate of this epic adventure.
