Probably one of my most cherished franchises...hell, it even inspired part of my online alias! This is what got me into gaming, into computers, technology, into storytelling, and art. Its almost embaressing to say, but the original Myst very well shaped my childhood, and the way I look at culture and fiction, to this day. Thanks for uploading this, it brings back so many memories.
Myst was the first game I played on my first computer -- Macintosh IIvx in 1994. I still play this game every two or three years, and I've got its original soundtrack on my ipod. Excellent game ever made!
They had so tight of a budget that they even portrayed the actors as themselves, let alone emulating sound vibrations from a toilet. This was the beginning of creativity within a software development environment. Myst ruled! However I liked the part where he stated "we weren't going to put any music in". Would have been a huge, costly mistake without music.
This game had some of the most amazing music in gaming history, and the sound effects were absolutely top-notch. Again, I'll say what I did with part I, TAKE THIS GAME IN CONTEXT. 1993 this game was released, and there was NOTHING even on its level. If it wasn't for the fact that adventure games didn't appeal to the gore hungry kids of today, they might still exist in prominence.
the myst games are even fun to watch other people play because you can help them when their stumped. "I've figured it out!!" is a common phrase i use when i help my brother play this game
"with a lifetime guarantee" Now that's super funny there! I can't tell everyone how much I love the MYST world. Both visually and audio!! PLEASE BRING BACK MYST ONLINE!!!! URU-AGES OF MYST please please please
You would think that back in 91/92 people were technology retarded but seems like they had all the basic tools we got now. Those graphics are jaw dropping for '93! They still look amazing 16 years later!
Well, in my opinion, Zork was one of the first to really make puzzle adventure games fun, starting with the old-school text adventures in the early 80's. In fact, the first 3D Zork game released the exact same year as Myst. The biggest difference between the two franchises is that Myst went with a very serious, atmospheric approach to the game, while Zork went rather goofy and had a quirky sense of humor.
@TheNewFormula they do; what does kind of creep me out though is that here I am trying to mimick the drum kit sound font he plays around with @1:55, and it's practically at the SAME position on the keyboard (given that you're using the orchestra drum kit). It's as if MasterTracks and eMagic (original founders of GB) were looking over each others shoulders all this time!
You are correct in that Zork was the first to do it, but I thought Zork and Myst were separate entities? Cyan did Myst and Activision did (most notably) Return to Zork, which came out the same year as Myst. If you've got a source I'd be interested to read up! I see what you mean about mostly original, though. I quite enjoyed the quirkiness of the Zork series. Myst was definitely a more serious and suspenseful title.
I also want to say that toilet thing was really disgusting. Was it necessary? Can't he use a glass or a bowl? And why was this game extremely popular at schools?
i remember watching this making video being amazed at how advanced their work was.
now i find myself amazed at how much effort it took.
Thank you brothers Miller for this ageless, timeless masterpiece!

I'm so glad they decided to add music.. I can't imagine how Myst would have been without it
