Looking back at this now, I couldn't believe people would buy a ps2 over the dreamcast at launch. PS2 didn't really get good games until the following year. It broke my heart when I found out sega was leaving the hardware business.
SuperJumpReviews And it's the same opinion now. Somebody can't believe people would buy a PS4 over any console this gen. But it was common for Playstation consoles, it has always relied on multiplats in the first year and picked up steam in the following year. The more powerful the consoles become the more it takes to develop games. We have 2 years of desert for PS4 until 2016 (I'm interested in Dragon Quest Heroes and Persona 5). PS1 and PS2 were similar to each other while it took almost 4 years for PS3 to gain some momentum. So that console is still a failure in Sony's eyes even if it sold better than any failure console or even winning console like NES.
PS2 being heavily hyped is the understament of a life time, people were saying it could feel emotions. The dreamcast is like that one girlfriend you had years ago when you were young that even though you've moved on since still stand out as being special.
hands down my favorite console of all time. just bought another one 3 days ago. i dont know why but ive never formed an attachment to any game company like i have with sega. respect to everyone at that company
Damn remembering Phantasy Star Online on my dreamcast playing it with friends.Almost makes me cry.Like seriously it was ahead of it's time and as far as im concerned it provided one of the best gameplay experiences.
For some reason i loved the dreamcast more than any of the other consoles. Back in '99 it just felt so fresh and unique. It was ahead of its time and did alot of things before anyone else. Motion controllers, cameras , mics, internet browser, online gaming, 128bit, cel shading, windows ce, dreamcast did all this before anyone else. all it didnt have was a friggin dvd player. It also had innovative coulourful and wacky games and those cool VMUs. It achieved all this in 18 months.Still got my dc.
I didn't get a Dreamcast until 2005 and I love it. I still buy games for it and still play it, even online sometimes. I probably played it more than my PS2 in the past year.
The Dreamcast was my favorite system. It was by far the biggest jump forward throughout the generations of consoles. It brought online play and graphics that were a ginormous step up from the previous generation (they still don't look half bad today honestly, better than the wii) at a silky smooth 60 frames per second WAY before Microsoft and Sony. And they sold it for $100 cheaper, with a great selection of games to boot. They did everything right, Sony just cashed in on the DVD hype later on.
T_T was my first console, and i still loving it ... i can't get tired of all those wonderful sega games like virtua tenis, phantasy star online, shenmue, soul calibur, chu chu rocket, souldier of fortune, sonic adventure, ready to rumble..etc..etc..etc
i remember having a dreamcast but like every other game system i owned it got replaced by a better system (gameboy, sega genesis, Nintendo 64, playstation). Now I look back at how much it had and it blows my mind, i honestly loved this system and i have so many great memories from playing it. Thank you Sega for creating the Dreamcast, you paved the way for better systems even though you didn't last
I GARANTEE THE MOMENT YOU GET IT. You will have SO MUCH fun. I have a PS3 Wii and 360 and I still must say. Dreamcast is still my favorite console ever released. SO many great games! ;)
I liked this video a alot because in 2000 I was not thinking anything about new consoles. I remember for Christmas getting a gameboy color pokemon gold, Zelda Majoras mask and WWE no mercy. Why would I think about new systems when these are games I loved and play to this day.
What an amazing console it was! Soul Calibour, Crazy Taxi and Code Veronica and Sonic Adventure 2 were amazingly addictive, I still play them sometimes. As was Phantasy Star Online; the online co operative play was well ahead of its time and provided a superb online gaming experience! Also you could battle pc players when online with quake 3. During its brief existence, it was a joy to own!
jet set radio on dreamcast was even better than xbox version imo because it was harder due to the graffiti controls. in xbox you only had 1 graffity button.
SEGA noticed that it couldn't keep up with the competition. It had a lot of potential, but it made a smart move. Now it is investing on creating their games through the playstations, wiis and xbox. It shows that they are still a very good company. I LOOOOOOVE SONIC.
People who say Dreamcast sucks are little kids who were like 2-years-old when it came out and never even played it. Dreamcast was the first non-handheld system I bought and it will always have a special place in my heart.
Man those games are MAGICAL! Virtua Tennis, Virtual On, Virtua Fighter, Space CHannel 5, Phantasy Star Online, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio... i can go on and on... i must agree with the last statement in the show: people who owned a Dreamcast were more happier than people who owned a PS2 (hell and PS3 and 360!)
I was the first person in our area to get a PS 2 as the truck was...hijacked lol. The computer store had a demo PS 2 which hadn't even been un-boxed yet, and as I was the first person to put a deposit down on the stores list they decided they'd give me the only 1 that would be around for weeks until they were restocked. Brilliant! I thought, & friends were :-O. This video says it all...I watched DVD's for weeks/mths on it & played demo's. Sold it after a few months. Dreamcast was superior.
The day I learned about SEGA going out of the hardware market I gelt so oppressed that I couldn't talk all day long, especially when I came back from school (I learned at school via friends), my parents thought I was feeling dizzy or I was angry or something. I mean I thought about "SEGA is gone" for at least a month before I finally realized that they would continue on the software market. I will always remember SEGA's consoles, especially the Genesis, my personal favorite.
Dreamcast will always have a place in my heart. Phenomenal graphics for its time - better than PS2 ever was. Great controller + VMU. High quality gaming library. I think the Dreamcast failed not because of DC vs. PS2, but because of Saturn vs. PS1.
I remember when Dreamcast was first released and all my friends said it was a waste of time, just going to wait for PS2. I got my Dreamcast right at release, and those friends got to watch me play for about a year before their beloved PS2 even hit the market. There was just something about the Dreamcast, the games, the characters. Really want another one that hasn't been running burnt discs for years, but that's kind of rare nowadays. Lots of memories with the Sega Dreamcast, that's for sure.
Sega had some of the best games of all time for the 6th and 7th generation because you got Sonic Adventure, PowerStone, Shenmue, the 3rd best Resident Evil, and Crazy Taxi. R.I.P great Sega consoles, not including the Saturn. We will always remember you.
I remember back then...Sega Saturn was a major fail, but Dreamcast was awesome!!!The graphics where so damn nice, and the games where great!!!!I really miss that time...Long Live Sega!!!
I was a Sega loyalist and I loved my Dreamcast. I had for three years until it died on me and never bought another system again after that. Say what you want about PS2 and its DVD player, the Dreamcast blew it out of the water with its game library and superior gameplay. I always thought Dreamcast was the better system and still do to this day.
Now, I do not play the PS2. I bought a PS2 back in the day, and I yeah, i played it... But you know what? After that I picked up a Dreamcast, and I still play that now. The dreamcast is set up next to my x-box 360 and I play it just as much. The PS2 is just sitting on a shelf doing nothing... That shows that Dreamcast, is just SO amazing. I think it's a lovely lovely little system. Thanks for reading my comment because I know it was big! lol Tom
It was simply ahead of its tim. many of the things we expect and we see in consoles nowadays was established by the dreamcast. I'm a little disappointed i never got the chance to own one.
Picked mine up at a thrift store for 10 dollars a few days ago. I had one before but it broke. First time playing it in 6 years. I hope someday they make the Dreamcast 2. I loved PS2 but I loved Dreamcast too. The Sonic creator was saying to let him make the Dreamcast 2. Fingers crossed.
Did you all also know that the DC had Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2 a year BEFORE the PS2 and Xbox owners could get them? I still love playing as Zangief to this day on the DC. It was sooo easy to use the controller.
i had this console when i was in high skul and it was cool to have it. but when ps2 released i sold it to my friend and buy my self a ps2 until then i was still a playstation fanatic.. oh well thanks for the dreamcast that day was still a lot of fun for me playing vidgames.. ^^

Much respect for the Dreamcast. I still play mine all of the time. So many games I own from American to Japanese released titles. It'd be pretty cool if they re-entered the market of hardware now. In a time when Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are taking their time with their next consoles.
the 2600 almost lived through the PS1 generation, and that was when the ncompetiton started to get tough, and the Neo Geo Lasted untill 2004, the Ps2, Xbox and GC era.

***** I envy you lol I want a DC and Quake 3 so bad so I can play online >:P
The 32-Bit Gamer
There is something called Ebay don't worry =)
go get one then
hands down my favorite console of all time. just bought another one 3 days ago. i dont know why but ive never formed an attachment to any game company like i have with sega. respect to everyone at that company

I love how all throughout the talk about software, it shows Virtua Fighter 4, one of my favourite games ever.

Powerstone, Sonic, and Trickstyle were awesome. Some of the funnest games I've ever played.
R.I.P Dreamcast you may not be on the market but you will always live on in our hearts
I had one. It was AWESOME! I recommend getting an old used/refurbished one. Well worth it!

i have 2 dreamcasts sitting in my gaming room. i bought one when they first dropped the price and picked up the first nba 2k game. loved it

i was taking a shit when watching this, thank u for making my shit entertaining
I remember when I bought a Dreamcast the day it came out. The system was ahead of it's time.
I wish Sega would create another console.

sega did an important work in the gameworld, thank sega, i love you
i bought a dreamcast last year because i wanted to play sonic adventure. i love it and i love my dream cast. DREAMCAST WILL NEVER DIE
I still play my Dreamcast to this very day. I just got done playing Jedi Power Battles with my 4 year old son!
People who say Dreamcast sucks are little kids who were like 2-years-old when it came out and never even played it. Dreamcast was the first non-handheld system I bought and it will always have a special place in my heart.

i must agree with the last statement in the show: people who owned a Dreamcast were more happier than people who owned a PS2 (hell and PS3 and 360!)
And on the pedestal these words appear:

Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains.

Great documentary absolutely loved it
i didnt even know about this console for the most of my life but now i want it so much !
dreamcast will live on as a legend
thumbs up for power stone being the coolest fighter series
Sega had my sympathies, still has and always will have...

Man wish Dremcast never failed. I got one from a co-worker and bought Shenmue. I love Dreamcast!
my brother gave me his old dreamcast. which has been sitting in a muggy hot garage for about a year. still works. xD
Dreamcast will always have a place in my heart. Phenomenal graphics for its time - better than PS2 ever was. Great controller + VMU. High quality gaming library. I think the Dreamcast failed not because of DC vs. PS2, but because of Saturn vs. PS1.

NHL 2k blew me away the first time I played it back in the day, and 2K2 was my fav. hockehy game until NHL 07 and NHL 08
I was a Sega loyalist and I loved my Dreamcast. I had for three years until it died on me and never bought another system again after that. Tom
"ppl who own a dreamcast in 2000 and 2001 would probably more happier then ppl who owned a ps2"
so true
i was never happy with my play station 2 or my game cube now the xbox satisfied me but i still think the dream cast has a place in my heart
I remember the Dreamcast. I had one game for it, and then it was over. lol. I bought it because the name was so cool.
You know, the sad truth is if Dreamcast hadn't of failed, we wouldn't of had such great SEGA titles like Shinobi on PS2.
A great sacrifice indeed.
i really hope that dreamcast gets back in the console making business. and power stone 1 and 2 was some of the best games ever
bring out a second one and reclaim your market.were here ready to support you.
Super Smash Brothers=the series that kept nintendo alive
the dreamcast control is soo good, if it had another analog stick then theres was the perfect control on your hand
It was simply ahead of its tim.
many of the things we expect and we see in consoles nowadays was established by the dreamcast.
I'm a little disappointed i never got the chance to own one.
If SEGA launched Dreamcast with DVD functions, SEGA would still be there.
I hope that someday Sega makes a comeback with a new console and takes back its rightful place in the consolemarket
I still play my dreamcast may you live 4 ever
Picked mine up at a thrift store for 10 dollars a few days ago.
I had one before but it broke.
First time playing it in 6 years.
I hope someday they make the Dreamcast 2.
It's one of my favorite consoles of all time.
THE most comfortable controller I've ever had in my hands.
You can pick up games for it now for like 2 dollars.
It's so sad really..
I loved PS2 but I loved Dreamcast too.
The Sonic creator was saying to let him make the Dreamcast 2.
Fingers crossed.
I gotta say, between owning a PS2 and a Dreamcast, I'm one happy gamer.
Did you all also know that the DC had Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2 a year BEFORE the PS2 and Xbox owners could get them? I still love playing as Zangief to this day on the DC. It was sooo easy to use the controller.

The Dreamcast and PS2 are BOTH awesome consoles!
"rumours started that sega was no longer manufacturing Dreamcasts" "NOOOOOOOOO!!!" :L i luved that part :')
My first "Next Gen" console was a Gamecube. I had a PS1 and N64, but this was considered the next gen.
@RetroShinigami
Excellent!
I love the tale of the Dreamcast... Reminds me of the story of a group of heroes staving off the enemy advance until their defensive line collapses!
Another thing that killed the Dreamcast was that it was so easy to pirate games for it. I bought the launch titles, but stopped buying games altogether back in high school when a guy started selling games for like, ten bucks, after burning them off his computer. So yes, I too am to blame for the demise of the Dreamcast. Those were the Napster days, when "free" content opened up a world of possibilities. It was like the badlands or something. Anything went
I still love playing it xD
Dreamcast Forever :)
I just bought 2 dreamcast systems, 9 controllers 6 memory cards and 3 games for $10 dollars! Long live Sega!!!
The thing about PS2 is you got good games and then you can play DVDs on there. It's a 2 for 1 thing. Which was kinda nice I can bring my PS2 into my room and watch movies if I wanted too.
The same here, I was like 14 when it came out and I got for chritsmas, I got NFL 2K and Soinc with it, I played it lik 12 hours straight, I still have it, I havent played it in a longggg time, but will after watching this, I might even go to our local GameHaven and buy a couple new games.
it's interesting they say that the dreamcast lacked a dvd player compared to the PS2, and was partly the reason why it didn't attract people. because the nintendo wii doesn't have a dvd player, and yet it is still doing so well, sales wise.
I do miss the Dreamcast, it was such an awesome system. Sega does make some kickass games now. They still have the best NFL game EVER made to date in NFL 2k5. It's sad that an NFL game made 6 years ago is better than any 360 and PS3 versions of Madden.
Dreamcast is the bomb!!
I still have my imported dreamcast next to the ps2, ps3, xbox, 360
Much respect for the Dreamcast. I still play mine all of the time. So many games I own from American to Japanese released titles. I used to go to the game store in my local mall and play the dreamcast every chance i got.
The funny thing is that Sega STILL sells brand spanking new, untouched, In the Box Dreamcasts.
Ratchet + Clank 3, Gran Turismo 4 and Metal Gear Solid 3.
Dreamcast completely changed my perspective on graphics, but PS2 graphics were on top of DC's by a landslide. Virtua Fighter 3 to Virtua Fighter 4 is a major example.
The PS2 had dozens of good games but hardly any of them I can truly consider my favorites except maybe for ICO and Katamari Damacy. On the other hand there are so many games I played on the DC that I still love to this day.
Ever1 Sega has patented a new controller and memory card this year!!!
There's still hope!!!
JET GRIND RADIO WAS SOOO FUN!
Dreamcast I love you!! So much more fun, Sega knows how to throw a party!!
i have alot of systems including playstations but i still roam around looking for new/old games for my dreamcast all hail DEARMCAST!
me and my brother just got the the one cord we needed for dreamcast so we can play it 2 days ago he got the system for christmas and sold it to his friends a couple years later and got it back it is so much funn

im one of the legions of sega fans waiting for a new console to dominate again.
1) A dreadfully short supply of PowerVR2DC graphics processors. This had a major effect on the DC's launch in Japan.
2) No built-in dvd drive.
3) The promised online network to a long time to be implemented.
4) By mid 2000 the hidden code in the DC's BIOS was hacked. Piracy became a huge factor in it's revenue losses.
5) Third party dev's started jumping ship to the PS2.
The DC was an awesome system but at that time Sega just didn't have the financial clout to keep it going.
Happy 10th anniversary Dreamcast!
for me personally, the death of the dreamcast is the saddest event in video game history, it is definately the best console of those who were a commercial failure
I loved playing nba 2k, nba 2k1, nba 2k2 toronto raptors all day baby!!!
@Bamazrollin: don't mind. I did the same mistake, but rebuyed one two weeks ago! Unbelievable how amazing this console still is!
lol
"Rumours have soming out, that sega isn't manufacturing the dreamcast"
Game Character: "NoooOOOoooOOOooo!"
One of these days, I am gonna go ahead & buy myself a dreamcast
