Those 2 are massive to it's usage as most people who use Ps over GIMP always point to these as sticking point. It's gonna be a while.
@zzco there are many reasons but ultimately it is because it is unprofessional and the industry the software is in, ignores it and has done so for decades. If they want to be taken seriously they have to do a rebrand otherwise it will just continue to sit in the perpetuity of mediocrity. I am going to make a video on this. @hammerheadcorvette4 You are correct that this is one of the reasons why. @zzco the term is used derogatorily towards people with physical disabilities. However, @hammerheadcorvette4 this term is not "circa 1950s" that suggests it is no longer used and it is most certainly still used. I have a friend who was born with physical limitations so he has been in a wheelchair his entire life. He has told me he has been called this term so many times he lost count. This is just one example of "just because you havent heard it being used for that, doesn't mean the term is not used for that". This is not the only reason though. There is also the reason that the term is used to described something as broken or damaged or weakened such as in video games "they gimped the character because they were OP". Any of the 3 are reasons to change the name but having all 3 and refusing to change the name is just terrible project management. As for what is needed, @hammerheadcorvette4 is correct. CMYK support is needed but Non-Destructive is much more important. However, Non-Destructive is so complicated and is not a single feature but more like 20+ features. I doubt GIMP will ever get there even in 100 years of development at the current rate of the project. GIMP 2.x was originally released in March 2004. That's right, GIMP 3.0 is just now finally coming out and with a "hopeful" May 2024 release that means it will have taken 20 years to have a major update AND that major update will still be out of date because it is using GTK 3 while GTK 4 has been out since 2020. Ultimately, I wish GIMP changed its name solely so it could become a viable project that people such as myself, professionals, would be able to use it but because it is a pariah it will never get there without some kind of backing effort from companies.
In my opinion that’s why the project has never had any kind of backing from a company and that is why it’s so far behind even with 3 times more development time than other alternatives.

@@darsparx I need to check how to get Blender running in xwayland, i only have Xorg installed right now.
@az9az9az9 XWayland is a built in function for Wayland and is provided automatically when using Wayland. You simply install an app the same way your normally would and if it is supported by XWayland then it will just work as expected. If not supported then it simply wont work. You dont have to do anything special for XWayland that is a translation layer inside of Wayland.
I'd like to know why gimp needs to change it's name.
agree. I think gimp is a fine name
As someone who learned English as their second language, I didn’t see the problem for a very long time. It wasn’t until I learned that the word gimp is a derogatory way of referring to people with a particular physical impediment, by means of a close friend with that impediment, that I realized how harmful that name is to them. My friend went as far as unfriend me in a big discussion, but thankfully we had another friend in common nearby who mediated and helped us come to understand each other.
The name should be changed because it’s disrespectful to the disabled, failing to represent the values of a community that aims to empower people via software.
The acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program is a slur. The fact that people are so comfortable with this is disturbing.
@@Bogotrazitelj."Oh boohoo, The woke mob is coming to take my slurs away!"
If thinking it's probably not a good idea to name software after slur is Political Correctness, than maybe PC is good?
Grow up
@@Bogotrazitelj. There's no mob, and no entity is enforcing political correctness, nor demanding it! Besides why do you call it politically correct, when it's an issue of respect, tact, good behavior, to not use derogatory names/words? It's almost 2024, not 1920!
Sounds like you are part of a mob: The conspiracy theorist mob!
GIE: gimp image editor
Keeping the name gimp anywhere would not help, imo
@@michael_tunnell i mean the can be anything xd, the suggestion is GIE, the gimp is just to contextualize gie :p
The more i type it, the more it sounds like 'guy' lol
