I had the same issue on a 2018 450R with the stock tank. When I pulled the pump I found the ground wire terminal on the inside of the pump had broken off right near the connector. It was making contact intermittently. When I test the pump directly at the internal leads it works perfectly. I am going to put a new terminal on and move it to on of the other four spots on the connector. Should be a solid fix and save some money. Hopefully this comment helps someone else too!

As a follow up, repairing the terminal on the pump module worked perfectly. I put a smaller push on style terminal on the wire and moved the ground wire to a new unused pin on the module. Then I unpinned the ground terminal on the connector side and moved it to the new spot. Make sure to carefully remove the red connector lock so you can release the tab on the terminal... Factory quality repair for about 25 cents!
I would suspect this issue would be responsible for a lot of crf "pump failures". The wires aren't secured in there, so fuel slosh will cause the wires to move and eventually break. Put a zip tie on the wires while you are in there! Godspeed

I had my 450rl die out on Saturday near baker ca. I had to get towed back to primm. I've got a new pump coming today. Thanks for making this video I'm confident I can get my bike running before baja rally.

They sell aftermarket pumps for $30-$40 bucks....you have to re use the old housing with regulator.

Great vid. Greater fix! Good job. I just got back from some tasty AZ/UT BDR action on the big girl. Love the 450 content. Keep it coming Rodney.

That just happened to me this week, I knew it was the fuel pump and or filter,I ordered an all balls fuel pump kit from Rocky MT, $75 , CRF 450 R ,funny thing is that I just put a pump in a different bike on monday not a HONDA TWO IN THE SAME WEEK.

Dang it!! just when I’m getting close to pulling the trigger on one of these, because of Honda reliability, now I see this?

its reliable, this could have been from my after market tank.

I was purposely trying to run my tank dry and out of nowhere it backfired and the motor stopped. Pushed it back home thinking it just ran out of gas. Now i have refilled the tank and its doing the same as yours. Think I fried the pump by running it dry, but only time will tell, still eliminating all possibilities.

This is the added advantage of running a larger tank, you can leave a couple of litres near the end of most rides and help the longevity of your fuel pump.

Why would you try to run a fuel injected bike out of gas? you should never ever do that!

Maybe it's the heat from the engine?

These run very lean with stock ECU. 0% throttle is just shy of stalling. The GET SX1 ecu with WIFI module would allow you to monitor 0% throttle rpm and possibly add 10-15% more fuel in that throttle position

Hi, I'm having a similar problem with my CRF250L. It started just after I managed to collide with a few cows(!) and power degraded after that, to the point where it will now only start from a booster battery and falters about 5-6sec later. Plug & spark good, fuel pump primes and flow of 200cc over 10sec into a bucket looks OK (Honda say >110cc) but I can't check pressure. I wondered about aftermarket tank. I'm running a bigger Acerbis tank. When I had the crash the tank was only about 1/4 full and I wondered if the fuel crashing from one end of the tank to the other may have shocked the pump or pressure regulator. Did your problems start after a fall? Maybe the bigger tanks could do with some baffle plates? Does the stock metal Honda tank have baffle plates?

Sounds electrical more than the fuel pump to me. Does it turn over when you try to start it? Sounds like a power lead touching the frame and draining it.

fuel pumps fail, but it's not as common on the Honda as some other brands.
