This helped me out alot. Thanks.
At 3:37... What is the Material that Josh is brushing off from the table? I have tried applying conditioner but never get the same look as this mound.
The material Josh is sweeping off is old contaminated infield mix and conditioner. I have always built mounds out of infield mix on the tables and around the front
part of the mound. Then add mound clay or heavy clay based materials 6'' in front of the pitching rubber. Followed by packing around the sides of the pitching rubber and a 3' x 5 ' landing area on the mound. A lot of people rebuild their mounds out of the mound clay. We always did it with infield mix because if it starts raining during the game you have a lot less mud or mound clay build-up on the pitchers' cleats. When rebuilding the table always sweep off old material before adding water and tilling in new infield mix or a heavy clay based material. Hope this helps.
So if you are starting from scratch and placing a softball mound and a clay block pitching lane in your back yard (40 inches by 9 feet)......Would you want a clay foundation prior to setting the pitching mound or just set the pitching mound in the actualy dirt (which will be a deeper dig out than the rest of the pitching lane)?
Im sorry for not replying earlier. Maybe this is not on your radar anymore but yes you would want a clay foundation installed before setting your pitching rubber. You would just need clay material at the pitching rubber and the width of the rubber out 7-8ft so when the pitcher lands your not developing a Hugh hole were your front foot lands. If you need more infirmation please send an e mail at bulldogfe@gmail.com . Thanks and I hope this helps sorry didnt see this until today.
What’s up with that infield edging? What is that used for?
Why do you put the rubber in completely level with the ground shouldn't the top stick out a bit so you can push off?
no look at any MLB mound and they don't stick out you can always dig a hole if you want to push off
Logan, You would want to build the mound clay up to the top of the pitching rubber so its flat or level against the rubber. I know some guys do allow 1/4 inch so kids feel like they can feel the edge of the rubber to push off with. You do not want a big hole that would start you off balance to start your wind up. Let me know if i can help in any way. thanks, Chad
What is that border for the infield
That is landscaping border to help protect infield mix and Turface from creating a lip over the winter.
