    Thank you for the " talk through". I've just bought my first caravan and you've helped me create a mental picture of some of the steps to set up. I've only ever owned Class C motorhome in the US...which are quite different from UK/ European units. My " new caravan " is a Vanroyce 450/2EK from'93. So hopefully - no tears ,just cold beers with my feet up!

    I wish I’d known this when I first started caravan trips although I hardly ever used my toilet cassette because all I had was an old Thompson Glendale and you couldn’t be bigger than twiggy to sit. I bought the caravan for £250 and it towed easily with my Datsun sunny 1.3 deluxe and even now about 25 plus years later I still miss it. I spent a lot of time repairing and under sealing the van and yes I know she didn’t look all that great but she saw me through a lot of heavy down pours and she kept on ticking but the one thing I do regret using to paint the outside of her was a cellulose paint, anyhoo I’m so for rambling on but you’re very helpful video brought back beautiful memories of my van so keep up the great work. 👍👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    Excellent once again, love this channel. Planning to buy a Caravan soon to tour the UK with my kids to get them away from XBOX and WiFi and to discover all the lovely places in this country and overseas also. Your videos have made it all seem much less daunting. I love the idea of using a site with fewer amenities on occasion to become self-sufficient and teach the kids about solar energy and using resources carefully, so many good lessons in Caravanning! We were regular campers (tents) but some cold nights and the general pain of setting up the tent each time has moved me on to Caravans now. Thanks guys!

    When putting the water pump into the aqua-roll, ensure the roll is as close as possible to the van to enable the pump to work even when the water level gets a bit low, i.e. keep it under the water. Leaving a lot of the hose outside the roll, means you can not pump the water below the pumps position.

      Hi Dave, i make reference to leaving front to back & the corner steadies at 3:02 in this video, also I have included a link to our levelling video which goes into further detail regarding how to level a caravan.
      This video is really a high level overview, and im sure you can imagine each topic could go into another 20mins just discussing that item at length.
      I hope that helps, when are you getting your own caravan ? im sure you will really enjoy the adventures, and I really hope our content is helping you.

    Hi Dan,
    Sorry to be pedantic, but before you unhitch the car you should ensure the caravan handbrake is applied then it doesn't roll off the levelling ramp ??. Or put handbrake on before disconnecting motor mover.
    great vid though very useful for newbies.
    Loved Trudgfest even though we dont do cooking on a CADAC .
    can't wait wait for next time!!, congrats for the amount of money yourself, Andy & Ian raised , no doubt with some help from your other halves.
    Craig & Kristen.

    • @grahamjessop4541
      @grahamjessop4541 6 лет назад

      Why put on the handbrake after the caravan is level and securely pitched and the motor movers have been disengaged? Drum brakes stick and lock if applied for any length of time.

      Thanks for this 😀 Is there a tip for moving onto the levelling block when using a motor mover? We found once the wheel started to go up the block the other side went faster and the caravan sort of went lopsided as if going in circles 😳🙈. Thanks again. Carol

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  6 лет назад

      Hi Carol, yes indeed there is. I rest against the side of the caravan, just to gently push against the van that is trying to turn towards me, this keeps it straight while going up the ramp.
      If you do this, make sure you chock the wheels and apply the hand brake before releasing the motor mover, it will want to move a bit more once the tension has been released.
      Hope that helps.

    A recommendation just once all the legs are down on the caravan just take off the handbrake. This allows you to move the caravan if it gets colder and the handbrake freezes up and also do it when I storage just put all 4 legs down and take off the handbrake.

    An essential point for the basic order of things to do, is that the boiler should be filled and hot water taps fully purged BEFORE mains heater is turned on. Or check that the water heater is off, either before or as soon as the mains is connected.

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  3 года назад +1

      Hi Simon, thats not strictly true. The caravan in this video has Alde, and it is perfectly fine to switch on the system with no water in the tank. Also, the Truma system (in our current caravan) has an auto shut off for the heating element if no water is in the tank. as described in the hand books of both caravans
      This was a case in older systems, but in the last 20+ years or so there have been safety items in place to prevent the burning of heating elements.
      Take care
      Dan

    I'm in Canada and my first reaction was disbelief ! Wow........not at all like here. This was simple enough. Are all 'caravans' set up like this ? Interesting and is it much the same in Europe ? I'll have to check that out. Here a 'caravan' is called either a 'travel trailer' which is hitched (coupled) to the rear like in this video, then we have 'Fifth wheels' which is coupled like a large commercial trailer. They are generally larger 'caravans' (4 to 7 tons) requiring a large towing vehicle. Our 'caravans' all come with built in tanks (25 to 100 gals) for fresh water (drinking water) a second tank for grey water and a third tank for black (Toilet waste) water. Most caravan parks (not all) have all the services at each individual camp site so we hook up electrical and fresh water directly to the caravan and all waste (Grey and black) directly to the on site sewer system. When 'boondocking' which means camping with no services, we just prefill the fresh water tank before setting up. Generally the waste tanks are good for 4 to 5 days before they require emptying. We find dump stations at all campsites and at some road side service stations. You just pull up along side and connect the hoses (4" hoses) and open the waste gates from the tanks. If it wasn't for this virus I'd love to visit the UK and Europe and try my hand at your style of caravanning. In the UK (Is everything done backwards ?) I noticed that even the height adjustment was done in reverse to us that is you turn clockwise to lower the jack and the same to lower the stabilizers. The results are all the same. This was interesting and fun ! For those who are interested here is our standard travel trailer set up: (ruclips.net/video/OaqGoEz32uU/видео.html) I admit, the video is long but it does show the basics of our caravans.

    I wish you had of shown the detail of front to back leveling as well as lowering the steadies. ie does it matter what order you drop the legs, and how tight to the ground they should be. How to get rid of a ‘wobble’ when moving round inside the van etc.

    • @gazt8239
      @gazt8239 3 года назад

      I always put a spirit level just inside the door on the floor depends how level your pitch is you might need to put some flat pieces of wood under your corner legs once level wind down the legs, but never use the legs to level a caravan they are not designed for holding to much weight, you can also use a cordless drill with an attachment to wind the legs up and down, and don't forget to put the handbrake on or put wood behind and Infront of the wheels.

    so that water drum is something you leave outside and just stick the pump in it? It doesnt have interlnal tank?
    I have the blue pump aswell - the older version. I thought it fills up some tank so I just got a bucket threw that in, but no pump action for me - Caravan is connected to CEE electricity on site, but PUMP on does nothing. no water.
    I have the SWIFT caravan from 2003

    Hi. Newbie question. When hooked up, the electric hook up and battery are left exposed to the elements?

    Hi
    Interesting video
    Don't forget if you can to consider the sunrise and sunset and shade .So the morning sun/heat doesn't wake you up too early or the kids if they're in a tent .
    I also use an inline meter on the electric so have a check on the Kilowatt/hours if you're not paying a fixed rate for the lecky . And I've got different lengths of cable depending on how far the electric pillar is .(10m,25m and 50m )

      hehe, don't panic - there is a lot of information, and to be fair- there is no picture of the steadies on the video. However, check out our video on levelling a caravan, and that should answer a bit more about steadies and levelling.
      Hope that helps
