You know what I like about this channel, is the straight forward no-nonsense approach. You get directly to the point of the subject, no ‘b-roll’, rubbish music, ego-driven intros, all business from start to finish, don’t change.👍

@@everything4tonce Changing all of your passwords is good. And you were/are using two-factor for your Apple ID, right? If so, they couldn't have logged in without your second factor. So you are probably OK. Just watch everything like a hawk for the next few days. Check in www.icloud.com/settings/ to make sure you recognize all of the devices there. Apple has a checklist of other things here: support.apple.com/en-us/HT204145

Thank you, Gary. My FIL was taken for $12000.00 in the gift card scam. A caller spoofed Apple's old support phone line, which showed up on his iPhone screen as Apple. They said after he pays them in gift cards, they would take over his computer and recover his files (which didn't need to be done). Instead of calling me to verify, he did everything they asked. Sigh.

good info. Gary. the one pop up I get a lot is the Adobe Flash Player box, wanting me to update. I always close it out & check the App itself to see if I need a update.

Excellent content. As a former Apple employee, retail, I can tell you we heard almost every variant of scam you could imagine - "They said my files were all locked!" ... "They told me to buy these gift cards immediately or else," and so many more. Sometimes it was hard to talk them out of their fears, but we did. Thanks for this.

Thanks Gary. I’ve been caught with the one, bought an old MacBook Pro, that was too old, and wouldn’t work. As a glutton for punishment, some years later I bought a iMac. Same thing! Thanks for this very informative video! Hopefully others won’t make the same expensive mistake that I’ve done. I now have a new one, from a real shop!

I was looking on eBay for non mac related things just now, and i happened to come across a listing for a 2013 MacBook Air (10 day auction with buy it now) with a starting bid of £0.99 (or buy it now for something like £199.99)
It is listed as coming with the charger, documentation, extension cable, and even the box (and all of these things are shown in the photos)
After having a very close look at the listing, and also checking the sellers feedback, i decided to place a bid on it, i won’t reveal what my bid is, but it is quite low, and i am expecting to get outbid, i will actually be surprised if i win the auction

I kinda wish Apple would allow us to plug in the serial number and they’ll tell us if the device is iCloud activation locked or not. That would really help with buying resale.
It’s not a cure all, for sure but it would help.

We buy all our Macs from OWC. They are the only place I've found who will upgrade, like add more RAM. The Macs arrive like new with a 1-year warrantee.

With websites like online shops, banking, etc… i have bookmarks for those websites saved in my browser (which is Firefox since i don’t currently have a Mac, just a Windows PC, and one advantage of Firefox over Microsoft Edge is my bookmarks will synchronise between devices with completely different operating systems)
I am planning on getting a desktop Mac, although it will be a while (possibly over a year) before i will be able to get one
I have been considering getting a cheap second hand Mac from a reputable company
I had a look on the website of a company that sells second hand stuff just now, and the cheapest mac they have is a refurbished late 2014 Mac Mini, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, for £189.99
I am tempted, but i think i will wait until i can get a brand new desktop Mac directly from Apple (will most likely be a Mac Studio)
I might look into what refurbished MacBooks they have once i have gotten the desktop Mac, i might get a refurbished intel MacBook (probably a 13 inch)

Another scam that's not necessarily Apple-related, but related to some Apple-based videos on RUclips, is one that can occur after leaving a comment on a tech review. What happens is that a scammer, who is posing as the actual content creator, will give a thumbs-up on your comment and then ask you to contact him/her on Telegram or some other social media site. It basically depends on what the creator uses.
Once you contact the scammer on the fake account, he will tell you that you've won a large number of new Apple products including merch (if any) that the creator has. They will then ask for your shipping address and then present you with "shipping options" that can vary between 100 and 300 dollars, including a "shipping company" out of India. And yes, they will ask you to pay for shipping via Apple or Ebay gift cards. Amazing.
They told me they were giving me the green iPhone 13 Pro, a new iPad Air, a Mac Studio, and the Studio Display. Woohoo!
These scammers will use any popular tech RUclipsr channel for this scam. Beware!

That's odd. Even after a restart? I'd start looking at what system extensions I have installed, and also through System Preferences, to see if you have any unusual settings. Though I can't think of anything offhand that would cause that.

About your last point, im thinking strongly of switching to pc in a year or 2. I think with most apple products I'm probably just paying for the logo.

Not sure what you mean. The last part is about buying used. As for "paying for the logo" -- what you are really paying for is macOS.
