Nice little loco but that squealing fan on the smoker would drive me nuts! It even made that poor lady on the platform pass out and fall over! 🤣

Awesome review, Chris! The Russian Decapod is one of my favorite steamers. I picked up the Frisco #1630 a while back. Great running locomotive. BTW, your layout is looking really terrific! Bill B.

Lionel did a really nice job on these - I got the Seaboard and have been very, very happy with it. Not a fan of the tether and how fragile it is but nothing I can do about it. I really like that P&R version, specifically that style of headlight. Really nice piece.

Amazing! Looks very authentic to the P&R!

Very good review of a great looking loco, Chris. I didn't realize that they so light compared with other steam locos of their era. Now I always read that they were built for the U.S.S.R. so the Russians had help moving men and supplies to the front to fight the Nazi offensive in WW II. That ended when Stalin signed a non-agression pact with Hitler.

They were stranded during the WW1 Era when the Bolsheviks overthrew the Czarist government. The USRA distributed them for the war effort. The Western Maryland rwy got 10 of them. They were built as "saturated steam" engines, meaning the steam was not totally dry. The WM added superheaters to theirs @ the Hagerstown MD shops.

Hi Chris! Very nice locomotive, however, I detected a loud squeal coming from each puff of the smoke unit. I’m wondering if this is typical for all these units or just this one.

This is due to the fan driven smoke unit I believe. All models have this sound, but it’s more obvious on the smaller steam engines like this one

You’re not wrong it certainly does have a loud smoke unit. Not every model has a loud unit like this one, just depends which unit was grabbed out of the box during assembly. The fan can be oiled to reduce the noise.

A cool-lookin' locomotive Chris, and how can you NOT like anything with a name like "Decapod?" It's almost musical!
An interesting feature on that P&R engine is the original Russian equipment raliling running down the sides of the boiler and also in front of the smokebox on the front platform. A bit ungainly by American standards but they made perfect sense for the Russians, those railings were a needed safety feature considering how ice could build up on the engine's running boards during those nasty Russian winters. How many were delivered to American railroads with those elaborate railings I'm not sure of but most didn't keep them for long.
And the Decapod configuration with light engine weight made sense to the Russians as well, the Russian railroads were built to a lighter standard than most American ones.
I've got a question. Just when did "Holy Grails" become "White Whales?" Are people unfamiliar with Moby Dick? Don't they realize what happened when Captain Ahab caught up with Moby Dick, the "Great White Whale?" At the risk of spoiling the ending of the novel or the movie it doesn't end well for Ahab!
Now I MUCH prefer the term "Holy Grail" for the elusive item of a quest. Hey, finding the Grail was the quest of the Knights Of The Round Table, and who doesn't want to feel like a knight? 🤩
OK, I've ranted enough. Thanks for posting Chris!

It’s a very non Reading looking engine, with its railings and lack of Wootten firebox. It’s no wonder they don’t last long on the Reading!
