GROWING A TREE FROM A STUMP *ONE YEAR LATER* & OH THOSE LILIES

- In today's video we revisit the Silver Maple that I cut down exactly one year ago. This tree was virtually dead with very little leaf canopy and loads of dead branches. I recommend thinking very hard about all the pros and cons before taking down a tree. In my case it was on an embankment and its root system was helping to avoid soil erosion. However, if the tree continued to die, the root system would eventually die also, so I decided to "coppice" it. Basically cutting the tree down leaving a stump or stool as it is called and forcing the tree to send up a crown of water sprouts below the cut stump. These water sprouts can then be trained to grow into a new tree. Not all trees can be coppiced, a general rule of thumb is conifers NO, deciduous trees YES and unfortunately fruit trees NO because they are grafted.
Now one year later we are looking at a 9 foot tree that has grown from a tiny flimsy water sprout in just one year. The new trunk is now woody and stable so I remove the stakes I had placed to keep it safe over the first Fall and Winter.
I also show you what should have been Apricot Fudge Asiatic Lily and has ended up with nature taking a hand and giving me a beautiful variety that is definitely not Apricot Fudge but is absolutely stunning. So it is my garden where I rule as Queen Bee so I name this lovely lady "Granny's Garden Lily".
