Listen, I'm 42 and have been searching for my first luxury watch for a long time. Ended up between the Omega SMP 300M Diver and the 44mm black version of this Breitling diver. Made the choice to go for the Breitling over the Omega for a few reasons. Biggest thing is what they did with the case size. Love how thin they are with the larger sizes. If the movement was needed to achieve that well done. Second reason was the new buckle on the bracelet and the strap. Having that buckle on a bracelet and a strap for this thing is so nice. The bezel is also better. Lastly, I hate the bracelet on the Omega - it makes a probably much better watch so much less desirable. I understand the movement criticisms here but you can't tell me this thing isn't going to keep accurate time so I don't care.
For some lines. I think they kind of ruined a great Superocean line with this thing. The sizing of the case is a good step forward, but had they done it with the old design of the previous Superocean, they'd have had a real hit. Hell I'd be trading my 44mm for the 42 in this case size. But not with this dial. This concentric bezel and bunched up dial thing is fuglier than hell. And it lost its wings. The wings probably had to go because they wouldn't even fit. The B logo is boring. And the square seconds marker is a slap in the face when you look at it. Just doesn't work on that dial.
I purchased the 42mm black dial on bracelet and ordered the rubber strap. Honestly the minute I saw it in person I loved it. It’s slimmer, lighter and more refined then the previous model.
Tried on the 42mm last week, it looked so much better than in the pics. Very tempted to get one now. Giving you a thumbs up for the no date window, you know you hate them too. Regards from France.
I love my superocean! I have the largest one and have received compliments from strangers nearly every time I wear it. It's a bold, yet sharp, modern, yet classic design from one of the best watch brands out there.
Visually I personally much prefer the previous generation Superoceans but I respect the very deliberate design choices Breitling have made here. These watches don’t look this way by accident after all! A choice was made and they went all in on it and I have to respect that. The refresh of the line bringing the thickness down and a uniform water resistance is really a common sense revision and on the fly adjustment is always a welcome addition. Loving your work as always YT 👏👏👏👏
Love this! As someone with a 7 inch wrist, I'm immediately drawn to anything in 36-39mm but feel like with the relatively short lug to lug of the 42mm- it just feels like it would wear closer to 40mm. I'm not in the market for anything from Breitling but this video has piqued my interest enough to stop by an AD one day and see how the fit.
Great video! This new SuperOcean is a positive surprise. The 42mm wears well on smaller wrists like my 6.5”/16,5cm one. Looking forward to seeing the bronze versions in person.
Ordered the Kelly Slater LE. Loved it immediately. My wife saw it and said 'that watch looks like it was made for you.' Can't wait to get it. First Breitling that I've liked enough to actually buy. Almost got the Pistachio Chrono B09, but ultimately didnt.
@@fabsant8577 Some are, but haven't heard of the Kelly Slater LE being in one yet. So far, I have talked to quite a few people who disliked these new Superoceans before they saw it in person and changed their mind when they saw it in person.
These certainly do wear smaller than their sizes suggest. I tried on the 44 mm at the Breitling boutique here in Nashville, and it looked pretty small on my 8 1/2 inch wrists, while 43 mm is typically my sweet spot for dive watches. Very interested in the 46 mm on a bracelet. Great video as usual.
6.5” inch wrist but I dislike small watches, 50mm lug to lug works for me, so 44mm version sounds good. I have the outgoing Superocean on 42mm but it wears small.
Nice Video, as always. I have the Ref. A17040 SuperOcean From late/early 90s/20s. It seems like no one knows about the Watch from that era. It was my first Luxery watch i bought. It got me into the hobby.
Bought the previous generation of this watch in orange 2 months before this came out. I lied to myself saying "I like the the fact that the date makes the watch more unbalanced in an interesting way". Nope, just traded in the previous one (loosing my shirt) for the new limited orange one which is almost sold out. I did get a 15% discount on the new one which eased the blow but well worth it. I bought the new one for the dial which was not only vintage inspired but more importantly balanced. I read a review on it a few months ago saying the orange one is a vacation watch and who needs a date function on one of those? I agree but after picking up this watch today it's the case that is the real improvement. Happy with my expensive mistake now. Keep the great videos coming. You are the watch home of sarcasm with a health dose of cynicism. Very entertaining for our ridiculous hobby.
I came into this video not particularly liking the redesign, and within a few minutes you had me lusting after the orange model. Then I saw the price and was reminded why I don't own a Superocean already. This was a real rollercoaster ride.
I really like that many people are hating on the watch because it probably means that I will be able to get it for a big discount ones I can afford it because I absolutely love it especially the bronze Version.
I think the 42mm will wear really well with the 48mm lug to lug, but I am really surprised there is such a gap between 36mm and 42mm. I would think a ~39mm would be a really good seller looking at how popular the BB58 is, although a big part of that is how thinner it is than the standard BB is and all of these superoceans are re pretty thin
I think if they lumed the whole bezel and chapter ring I’d buy one. Maybe I’m a contrarian but I like a 4:30 matching date window-keeps the symmetry and only noticeable when you want to see the date 😎!
Man bro you really put on a nice show case here. These are on my short list. I like the polished centre. That is totally Breitling. 10 years ago all their watches were 100 % polished.
I've seen this watch almost universally panned by RUclips watch people who have reviewed it without having it in hand. The people commenting on those videos too. Also seem very unpopular on watchforums. I've also seen several people change their tune when actually having it in hand. I loved it instantly.
I own the 44mm. Ordered it within an hour of its release. My biggest reason was it’s a total rebranding of the super ocean. There’s only two options, breitling has made a huge mistake and they will re-brand again or this is the future of the super ocean and we had a chance to be the first to get an early model. I also love it.
Yes, as soon as I saw it on Instagram I really liked the clean design - and some nice typography too (without Eurostile and Arial in particular). I had a look at them recently in the boutique and they are slim indeed.
I really do like the new super ocean line a lot. The 36 mm is awesome for anyone imo. I do like having a date window on a watch, it's not a deal breaker but it is a good addition to have. In terms of the movement I have nothing against off-the-shelf movements especially if they're chronometer certified. I do think though at a price like this and considering the resources that breitling has, they should be using an in-house movement.
With in-house you mean the Tudor / Chanel/ TagHeuer/Norqain/BellAndRoss(owned 20% by Chanel) movement or do you think Breitling should make a movement actually in-house and what do you think the prices would have been?
growing up, Breitling was known mainly pushing those over-done chronographs and pilots watches in those horribly tacky magazine ads and now... they're one of my favorite brands? wild.
I’ve just purchased the black 46mm and IMO it’s perfect there’s not one thing I would change and it’s the first watch I’ve purchased that looks stunning on both the bracelet and the rubber strap so bought both
Not for me but can see the appeal. Mostly just prefer the look of the current (previous?) model. Loved the look of those big numerals and was hoping for them to iterate on that a bit by tweaking dimensions/refining the date window... kind of just like they did here... Curious what this will do to the aftermarket value of the current (previous) gen.
I’ve ordered the Aqua Color 44. Some people prefer the outgoing model for it’s arguably more cohesive aesthetics. I like the contrasting finishes & slightly more “brash” appearance of this latest line; exactly why I’m eagerly anticipating arrival … told 4-8 weeks.
I like so much about it, the case, clasp improvements etc but I just can't gel either the dial in the same way as the previous generation. I bought the same as yours, the 42 blue, I fell in love with the dial and how it looks.
I bought the previous model in blue after seeing your review😁 I already bought the new one in 42 mm blue bezel and cream dail. Love the watch🤩. It is a totally different watch, so it goes well in my collection with the previous model. If I did not already bought the watch, I would now😜.
Breitling has a stable of winning new watches worth looking at IMO. I agree, the date complication isn't missed and the dial looks better without it. I've always thought divers should know the date without looking.
Excellent roundup thanks! In simple terms, I think it is fair to say that you can take 2mm off the listed diameter for each watch. I would normally stick to 42mm size, but will definitely get the 44mm version owing to that wide minute track.
Personally for me I still prefer the older style of super-ocean. The design looks more original in the sense that you wont be finding it on another brand. The new version is like they just take best bits from diff sources and merge into one.
I appreciate that you not only covered all the sizes, but all the comments I had seen, or even thought on this new release. The minute hand is a bit odd to me for the reason you stated. Could I get over it? Quite possibly. The seconds hand lack of counter balance was something I hadn’t even noticed, likely due to not being able to take my eyes off the minute hand. It is odd, but I think that is more of a just not used to it type of situation. I could get used to it. Thanks for the tip on the sizing. I have a 7-1/4” wrist, and should probably go check one out when our Breitling boutique opens later this summer. I too would prefer the bracelet being all brushed. It was part of my issue with the Seamaster 300 I tried on last weekend, on a watch that otherwise wore nicely on wrist. I would love to see a longer power reserve movement. I really don’t care who makes it. If ETA offered a long power reserve movement to Breitling, I would be cool with that. At least it is a COSC movement, because that seems like table stakes at this price point. I do look at the price and see how much the Pelagos offers for slightly less on bracelet. It is definitely a different look though, and certainly thinner, so it definitely has its own merits.
I like them quite a bit - the design is really fun & unique. The adjustment system is a fantastic addition as is the ceramic bezel. They just LOOK more luxurious too - whatever you make of the design, I don't think the up-tick in luxury appearance & feel is up for much debate. I could definitely see myself buying one.
Brietling have definately improved. I always thought they were a bit cringey. I LOVE that they offer the same watch in various size incrents. I wish every watchanufacturer did that
I had an 'old' SuperOcean 44, which I sold to a friend of mine. I wasn't really impressed by the early pictures and reviews of this new generation with it's T-rex (aka short) hands. But having seen and tried them on at my AD really convinced me, this new gen is actually a great watch imho. It looks very, very good on the wrist and feels like that too. Long things short, I bought myself the blue/black 44 on a rubber strap. I really wanted the bracelet version but for the summer I think the rubber is a good start :) Been wearing it for quite some time now, it' awesome indeed. But, I still missed my old 44, the new one doesn't have have that though toolwatch vibe going on and feels quite different. So, luckily my AD still had one (black dial/bezel like I had before) so I actually bought that one too a couple weeks later. I think the Bronze ones will be very cool too, but since these will change overtime, I don't know yet how to feel about that. Time will tell...
I'm not a fan for two simple reasons: the inner chapter ring/ rehaut. It works when its on a chrono which has a hand that sits in that chapter ring to count the minutes, as in the watch this is based on but it does not work here _and_ the value, or lack thereof. For far less you can get several luxury divers with inhouse movements and even 5 day power reserves. This is a miss and I was hoping for better.
Another great video. I don’t dislike it, but don’t see myself swapping it for the prior iteration or adding another SuperOcean to the party. Today. That’s my view today. I reserve the right to change my mind!
I also purchased the previous BSO 42mm blue dial because I love the look of it. Your videos helped a lot in making my decision. I’ve had my BSO for three weeks now and have noticed my date doesn’t click over until 4 min paste midnight. I was wondering if you’ve had a similar experience? Does your BSO date click over right at midnight? If it does do you think my watch is defective? Thanks again for your videos and any opinion you may provide in my inquiry.
I don’t know how 38 or 40mm didn’t make the cut. Especially 40 being the sweet spot for so many. Other than that these look very nice. I now officially love no date. Maybe it is my older eyes.
I'm currently in my "watch pre purchase mode" watching videos again and again looking at the watch I want to buy. Debating between the Tiffany blue and navy blue dial.
My only hold-up is the move away from the wings logo. That’s consistent for me across much of recent Breitling. Some good moves across a number of the their lines, but I feel they are losing a big part of their identity by losing the wings.
Great review 👍 more I see this watch more I liked. My previous version white dial and blue bezel so great for summer time, but this piece even more holidays piece 👍😎
I've moved away from large watches, including divers watches, and prefer 38~40 mm, and I've never considered Breitling until I saw the turquoise in person. At first I was disappointed that they only had the 38mm, which was too small, and the 44mm, which is a size range I'm trying to stay away from. But trying it out at a botique, the 44mm wears even smaller than a 43 mm Bathyscaphe I used to own, due to the chapter ring design and compact case and lugs. And It's absolutely gorgeous in person. I would say I am very tempted, but it's a 3 months wait at the moment, and summer's ending. Maybe next year
Great video as always! I'm with you on the bracelet, seconds hand and the minute hands! It's cool what they have done with the new superocean. But the previous model is still the best superocean IMO. I also like dates on my watches, it comes in handy ( activated my force field for the stones that will be thrown at me for the date comment)
saw these onlines and i hated them. went to a boutique and checked these out and they are gorgeous the black dial is like staring at glass its so deep.
Those look nice from a distance but the applied lume is kind of a disaster in those close-ups (for example at 5:32). So, uh, maybe just enjoy these without your glasses on?
I like the symmetry of the dial (thanks to the no date complication), but Breitling has the habit of using a cheap plastic movement holder/spacer on their watches. I assume they do the same here. Given that the different sizes in this line all use the same type of movement, the bigger watches will have bigger (plastic) movement spacer inside?
I like the looks but I really do use the date on my watch. I have a superocean 44 from the last gen but for the price I'd spend a touch more for a pelagos over this new one
Great review as always. Don't like the dial with a big chapter ring that makes the face look small in proportion. Hate that they took away the date like you said. I prefer my heritage in white dial. I feel this will not be a big success. Clasp and the case look better and refined but I am not buying it for those. To me dial is the most important feature and these look ugly, sorry, to anyone who like or love them. Thanks for an awesome and detailed review. You are really terrific!

Lots of improvement over the past few years.

This watch cost 2 thousand dollars more than it should. It’s the same price as an omega sea master but it’s movement is literally half as good.

They just LOOK more luxurious too - whatever you make of the design, I don't think the up-tick in luxury appearance & feel is up for much debate. I could definitely see myself buying one.
You're doing the lord's work. 44mm for me hoss

Perfect summary - great one!
I like this one. A yellow dial would be very cool!
Brietling have definately improved. I always thought they were a bit cringey. I LOVE that they offer the same watch in various size incrents. I wish every watchanufacturer did that
great changes, I'm a fan of the no date, its much cleaner and more functional for diving anyway
I'm a watch fan, I prefer a date on the watch. I always forget the date so..... I still bought this though (in the 42). And love it :)
Great video, love the sincerity and the jokes!
This watch is stunning
This is actually normal for automatic watches. Most click over at a range of time a few min before or after midnight. Totally normal.
Which did you end up buying?
@@TheAmazza2 Tiffany
Does the inner chapter ring rotate with the bezel or is it fixed like that?
My only hold-up is the move away from the wings logo. That’s consistent for me across much of recent Breitling. Some good moves across a number of the their lines, but I feel they are losing a big part of their identity by losing the wings.
“If you think you need the old 2000m water resistance, you’re wrong” #subscribed ! 😂🎉
Great review 👍 more I see this watch more I liked. My previous version white dial and blue bezel so great for summer time, but this piece even more holidays piece 👍😎
Seasonal watches. I like it.
This was a great review, thanks
Would love to see this design without the chapter ring. Would a super clean looking watch. The 36 would then look bigger and pure class.
Now you have me intrigued! I was all set on the Turquoise one, I must go and see them in person.
I really like the 42, but probably not enough to purchase..
Great video!
5.9 inches /15 cm wrist here
Should I go for 36 or 42mm or neither of them?
Thanks
36
@@YoureTerrific I was afraid of that answer :) I have a glycine airman purist 36mm I love it but it's a bit on the small side...
Thanks btw :)
How is the bezel action?
Got this in yellow on rubber. It is cool as hell.
Great review. Another interesting thing. The bezel can be moved by pushing down and rotating. Supposed to help when wearing gloves.
On the 46?
@@YoureTerrific its my understanding on all. Saw that in a review from an AD. Thought it was a very nice feature
Are the center links angled weird?
Been like this for many years.
Why do breitling have to have a Tudor dial, looks OK though
Nrrr overpriced get a Tudor
Love that orange one! Only gripe is the watch hands in general and the new price. Other than that pretty amazing.
That turquoise is gorgeous
Clearly you like the orange... it was the center of the shot for most of the video :)
Previous look in the new frames. That’s what I would have wanted..
46 with steel bracelet is fire
Those look nice from a distance but the applied lume is kind of a disaster in those close-ups (for example at 5:32). So, uh, maybe just enjoy these without your glasses on?
I like the symmetry of the dial (thanks to the no date complication), but Breitling has the habit of using a cheap plastic movement holder/spacer on their watches. I assume they do the same here. Given that the different sizes in this line all use the same type of movement, the bigger watches will have bigger (plastic) movement spacer inside?
Well the previous generation had a metal one: ruclips.net/video/lXcSxJsnHcY/видео.html
I like the looks but I really do use the date on my watch. I have a superocean 44 from the last gen but for the price I'd spend a touch more for a pelagos over this new one
Tell me more about this “using watches to tell time”…intriguing 🧐
I would but I don’t have the TIME.
@@YoureTerrific I see what you did there 😄
Great review as always.
