Agra's street food scene is renowned for its delectable array of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors. In today's episode, we are out to explore some of the city's most famous food joints that attract a sea of food enthusiasts, both locals and visitors, guided by our amazing host Ritik Gupta, the founder of Trocals.
Our first stop was Achman Veg Restaurant. It is one of the oldest family restaurants in the city that serves North Indian specialties. Here we tried a basic thali with rice, roti, and a few Northern Indian curries, mostly paneer-based. The vibe was quite relaxing, and the food was pretty decent.
Next stop is a Chole Bhature place that brings in nostalgia for many. Bhajanlal Chole Bhature Wale has a huge fan following because the tawa bhature and Amritsari-style non-garlic chole make for an irresistible combination. He used to sell from a cart and now has upgraded to a proper shop. We met many of his followers who recently discovered him and hence were visiting him. The soft bhature and chole, along with sweet and sour chutney, were pretty amazing.
Then we headed to Shri Banke Bihari Mishthan Bhandar for samosas and imarti because we have heard a lot about their samosas selling off the counter like hotcakes. After a fun interaction with the cook, we got our serving. The filling was well-spiced and the crust very well-cooked despite being fried at a higher temperature. Imarti was crisp, syrupy, and decent.
Our next stop was Delhi Gate Chai Shop. The interesting thing about this place is that it has no shutter. Yes, you heard it right, this place never closes its doors and doesn't have one at all. We have visited it earlier on our previous visit and loved their butter toast. This time too we opted for the same as the salted butter and crisp toast combo never fails to surprise us. The amount of butter might freak one out though. With chai, it feels like a super comforting combo.
After a small break, we reached Long Shree Fruit Merchant for some juice and shakes that they specialize in. The owner was a very genial lady with a robust voice that was filled with pride and determination. We tried their mixed fruit shake that was loaded with milk, 5-6 different fruits, and sugar. The smoothie-like consistency made it a fun thing to try.
As evening set in, we headed to Chaat Gali for some fun snacks. After much contemplation about the plethora of choices, we zeroed in on Kelaji's Basket Chaat. It was basically tartlets filled with all the chaat components, and trust us, the result was brilliant. We loved the riot of flavors and textures.
Our final stop was Pakka Baba Chaat Bhandar. Because of his fun and lively nature, Pakka Baba has a huge fan base who throng to his cart to relish his paneer-loaded chilla and ghee-fried aloo tikki. Since one must have Agra's tikki whenever they are visiting the city, we decided to try it. Because of double frying, the tikkis were very crisp. The chutney and spice mix added a magical touch.
We wrapped up with our taste buds tingling with the memories of the diverse flavors we tried.
