One of the first rules of gun safety is you never put your finger on the trigger until you're ready to shoot and are aiming at your target. It helps prevent accidental shootings. That was one of the only realistic gun details in this movie. Not that I have anything but love for this movie. It's a classic! I'm just noticing more details now that I'm older.
Great reaction! 1984 was one of the best years in history for movies. Beverly Hill's Cop outgrossed movies like Ghostbuters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Terminator, Gremlins, The Karate Kid, Footloose , Police Academy and many others that came out that year.
Eddie Murphy is currently 63 so was around 23 when this film came out...quite young. It is one of his first feature films definitely the first one he headlined.
Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall and James Earl Jones : “COMING TO AMERICA” that’s a funny one and “clever “Eddie and Arsenio play a bunch of different characters in this one !!
"Before I go, I just want you two to know something, alright? The supercop story... was working. Okay? It was working, and you guys just messed it up. Okay? I'm trying to figure you guys out, but I haven't yet. But it's cool. You fuck up a perfectly good lie." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Damon Wayans and Alice Cadogan. Casting Notes Fact: Gilbert R. Hill, a real-life Detroit Police Department Homicide Detective, played Inspector Todd. Hill later served as President of the Detroit City Council. The franchise is his only theatrical appearances. Projection Headline Fact: During his tirade at the Beverly Palms Hotel, Axel (Eddie Murphy) pretends to be writing an article called "Michael Jackson: Sitting On Top Of The World" for Rolling Stone magazine. In real life, Playboy ran an Eddie Murphy article with the same "Sitting On Top Of The World" subtitle. Double Assault Fact: The mansion used in the final shootout between Axel (Eddie Murphy) and Maitland (Steven Berkoff), the former Harold Lloyd estate in Beverly Hills, is the same mansion seen in the final shootout between Matrix and Arius in Commando (1985). Coincidentally, both heroes were trying to rescue somebody named Jenny (Lisa Eilbacher) in that mansion in their respective films. What Script Fact: Eddie Murphy, John Ashton, and Judge Reinhold improvised most of their comic lines. Literally hundreds of takes were ruined by cast members, actors, or the director laughing during shooting. During the "super-cops" monologue, Ashton is pinching his face hard and looking down in apparent frustration. He is actually laughing. Reinhold put his hand in his pocket and pinched his thigh really hard, trying to prevent himself from laughing.
People forget Reiser got Beverly Hills Cop and then Aliens. Where I worked we had two comics do a Father's Day Show. They were going to come back a year later. One cancelled and that was Paul Reiser as he just got Mad About You. The other was going to come. He had to cancel due to getting a pilot and rescheduled. The show got picked up and he cancelled. The other comic....... Jerry Seinfeld.
i like your authentic reactions, especially toni's-- she seems a kind soul who is especially attuned when watching and experiencing each film. I'm 60 years old and love the 80s movies! using david's criteria in this episode, here's my top 10 suggestions for your future movie reaction: five romantic comedies/dramas: an officer and a gentleman (1982), flashdance (1983), Crocodile dundee (1986), dirty dancing (1987), pretty woman (1990), and five 80's films i think you'll both enjoy: excalibur (fantasy), war games (sci-fi), hoosiers (sports drama), back to school (comedy), the untouchables (crime drama), lean on me (school drama)
This one really did the fish out of water thing well, the second really blends the action and comedy well, the third one was a little too wacky for its own good, and the fourth one looks amazing:) Looking forward to it:)
There’s a cute movie with Sally Field ( Forrest Gumps momma) and James Garner a sweet romance called “Murphy’s Romance”, a late in life second chance at love.
I was 16 years old when this movie came out in 1984, and I went to the theatre to watch it the week it was released. Remember it like it was yesterday! Can’t believe it’s been 40 years! This movie turned me into an Eddie Murphy fan, and I’ve watched it again many times over the past four decades. Can’t wait for the fourth installment on Netflix!
Definitely need to see the sequel! Other 80's classics to check out: WarGames Big Trouble in Little China Big Over The Top The Running Man Cobra Romancing The Stone Short Circuit Roxanne Innerspace
Yes 1985 also indeed, but Beverly Hills cop is from 1984, that year was a great year for movies, with classics like Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Terminator, Gremlins, The Karate Kid and Police Academy :-)
This movie helped create two blockbusters by accident. Ghosbusters was written with John Belushi in mind instead of Bill Murray. Eddie Murphy was also was cast for Ghostbusters. Belushi died and they got Bill Murray. Meanwhile Beverly Hills Cop was offered to Sylvester Stallone and was a different movie. He turned it down and they offered it to Eddie Murphy. Eddie Murphy obviously accepted and his role was recast with Ernie Hudson. Murray's role was expanded and Hudson's role diminished as he didn't have the star power.
You should definitely check out Eddie Murphy's first two movies (which he made while still a cast member of Saturday Night Live) "48 Hours" (with Nick Nolte) and "Trading Places" (with Dan Akroyd). BTW There is a connection between Trading Places and a later Eddie Murphy movie "Coming to America" that if you're paying attention you might miss.
Back then every window in a car had to be rolled up or down by hand and every lock had to be pulled up or down by hand (or the front had a key just for the doors (but the back was still by hand) and trunk and the ignition had its own key). That's why most cats in the 80s was 2 doors. I miss the 80s
One of what I consider a "perfect" movie from the 80s: Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon. Martial arts movie created by one of the founders of Motown Records, so the soundtrack is off the hook. Not very many big name actors are in it, but it's full of character and campiness. Not enough people have reacted to it on youtube, lol. For more 80s Eddie Murphy, it's required to watch Trading Places and Coming to America (preferably in that order because while the stories aren't related, there's a nod to Trading Places in Coming to America that makes it just a little bit better, lol).
Great reaction like always, love this movie. For a period of time in the 80's. Eddie Murphy was the biggest star in the world. He was the world's number one stand up comic and had the world's number one movie at the same time. He also had a hit song! 84 was a monster year for movies. Never ending Story, Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, The Karate Kid, Police Academy, Footloose and Beverly Hills Cop AND SO MANY OTHERS. This was originally written with Sylvester Stallone in mind. Disagreements over the script led to him converting the movie into the film, Cobra. Eddie Murphy was also planned to play Winston in Ghostbusters but he took this movie instead. Yes. The instrumental, “Axel F. Foley Theme”, was written for this film and it became a international hit in the 80's. Keep up the good work.
I remember when this came out. , I was 15 see it at the movies ; I graduated in 87 , was 18. .also I remember the old drive in sometime I use to hide in the frunk and get in for nothing . I. Snuck in to the a move the “ movie was called “ 10”. Bo Derek
Love this reaction. Another good 80s Eddie Murphy cop movie is 48 Hrs. And your right about it being a different time....the R rating was mostly because of the language and the nudity. The violence was pretty tame and being the 80's, frankly nobody cared about the drugs.
I'm not sure if Toni is looking Stunned or Confused🤔but either way, this one is going to be a whole lot of FUN tonight!👍 Fun-Fact: IDK if David knows this but before Eddie Murphy was ever / officially cast, Sylvester Stallone had almost signed on to play 'Axel Foley' instead. While He'd considered the role, Stallone made several Rewrites to the Original Script, which would have changed the overall-tone to be More-Action and Less-Comedy!💥Stallone obviously passed on this Movie, but He'd kept His Rewrites and (2 years later) used them to make His own 80's Cop Movie😎called "Cobra!"
Love Eddie in these ..We were really spoilt in the 80's & 90's .. with music and movies .. I remember the first 2 so I don't think the 3rd was as good lol .. hopefully the 4th is really good.. Lethal Weapon movies were a big fave of mine too (Mel Gibson & Danny Glover) and YES 80's hair is making a comeback lol go for it !! The scene with Axel's boss was so funny but yes a lot of swearing is most likely the reason for the "R'.. I had a boss couple years ago with the surname Foley and he was called Axel lol
Should look up some older Saturday Night Live episodes of Eddie Murphy doing “MR. ROBINSONS NEIGHBORHOOD “ hilarious take off of “Mr. Rogers Neighborhood “ , Eddie’s takes place in a run down apartment!! So good!!
Hi Toni and David, great review as always. There were some classics in the early 80s and late 70s. Just some comedy titles you might want to put on your list are: Stripes, Police Academy ( I don't think you have reviewed that but a lot have looked at it lately on RUclips) for a late 70s please check out Foul Play with Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase, I think you guys would love it. One of Spielberg's first movies was 1941 a really good comedy about the start of WW2. Animal House is another I don't recall you reviewing yet. Even a good early 70s was What's Up Doc. You need to watch some good comedies while watching The Pacific as those later episodes are difficult. Looking forward to more!!!
late 70s, early 80s UK films i love Threads, quadrophenia, Breaking glass, Scum, The firm (football hooligans), Babylon (Reggae film), Made in britain (Tim Roths first feature film), My beautiful launderette
The Thing (1982) Starship Troopers (1997) Se7en (1995) The Usual Suspects (1995) No Country For Old Men (2007) V for Vendetta (2006) The Matrix (1999) Fight Club (1999) Prisoners (2013) Godzilla Minus One (2023)
Who leave the back doors unlocked when is parked.... maybe its because its the 80's? No clue about that in USA, since I'm not from there, but I heard this question in a couple of reactions to this movie, so I figured that is maybe because at that time there wasn't much danger. Actually in my country if you are inside the car and parked, most of the times, doors are unlocked, specially in cities not so big.
Jean Claude Vandame Bloodsport. An Amazing Movie, Based on accual events in the life of a real man. Well worth seeing please tell Toni not to let to title scare her away.
I recommend watching my favorite movie of my life, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” with Ben Stiller. This film is perfect in everything: music, landscapes, actors, philosophy, etc. You will definitely like this movie

I actually liked Beverly Hills Cop 3, we get more of Serge. More 80’s films to watch 48 Hours with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte Tango And Cash - Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell See No Evil Hear No Evil - comedy with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor Stakeout and Another Stakeout with Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez Just a handful to think about And Cannonball Run 2
80's was cool but late 90's early 2k's was the sweet spot, the time where practical effect techniques were peaking but tech hadn't quite got to CGI yet so the effects were so much better because they had to be thought out and practically done instead of relying on a computer to do all the effects. Come to think of it, that is also when music started going down hill - or maybe I'm just old and don't get it anymore.
1. Movie magic: An entire truck loaded with EMPTY cigarette boxes. 2. IMVHO Eddies' best movies are "Trading Places and "Coming to America"😎😎 3. Serge/Bronson Pinchot was in a funny series "Perfect Strangers". 4. Jenny/Lisa Eilbacher played Segar in "An Officer and a Gentleman" HINT HINT 5. Maitland/Steven Koff is one of the best bad guys ever! He also played the Soviet Colonel in Rambo II. 6. Billy/Judge Reinhold played Brad Hamilton in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".
Sylvester stallone was supposed to star I. This movie but he wanted to make alot of changes to the script so he walked and took his ideas to create the script for Cobra.
The bad guy wasn't wearing a robe in his office, it was a Japanese kimono. He was being 1980's fashionable.
Thanks for the info! That makes more sense than a robe! 😂
The guy that gave Axel the bananas was Damon Wayans.
The man behind the counter as Axel is checking out of the hotel is played by the director of this film: Martin Brest.

'Well, cuz.' was an oft-used phrase in my circle of friends back in the day. #80s
“48 Hours”, Eddie’s first movie was even better. Nick Nolte was Eddie’s co-star. Action comedy like this one and really good.

No one has picked Serge the helper at art studio was lead actor from perfect strangers.
No cars were damaged in the opening police chase. Funny movie, Toni only had three and a half jumps. Great reaction.

I love this movie. There are 3 movies in the series. You guys should watch the other 2 also watch "48 hours" Eddie Murphy's first movie

Very under appreciated movie!

Yes, see the other Beverly Hills Cop movies. I enjoyed seeing you both enjoy this one yourselves.
Hard to believe the actor John Ashton who played Sgt Taggart was only 35 years old when they were filming this movie. He looked alot older.
I thought he was closer to 50!
Love Eddie Murphy’s Laugh!!!!
Boy, we miss it.

I am glad Toni liked this one. I think she will like BHC 2 as well!
I know mama is gonna have a problem with the stripper scene, and I don't necessarily mean the strippers but what Eddie is saying 😂😂😂
48 hours and Another 48 hours are good Eddie Murphy movies.
Toni could absolutely rock the Jenny Summers coif. 😂😂😂
I'm hoping she will for part 2! 😂

Totally!
...and movies!
The 70's had the best movies. Take a look.
Enjoyed your reactions! It almost seemed like David hadn't seen it either!
Thank you! It had been a long time since I had seen it. I don't think I had seen it since 1984 actually! 😂
Nudity, F bombs and big violence gets you an R rating. You are allowed 1 F bomb in a pg 13 movie.
I really enjoyed this! Thank y'all!

Love this reaction. Another good 80s Eddie Murphy cop movie is 48 Hrs.
And your right about it being a different time....the R rating was mostly because of the language and the nudity. The violence was pretty tame and being the 80's, frankly nobody cared about the drugs.
Doubtless the language and nudity were main reasons for the R rating, but I've always found the execution scene to be pretty raw and disturbing,
Victor's "associate" is Mike from Breaking Bad.
Jonathan Banks
@@Parallax-3D Yes! I couldn't think of his name at the time.

I think we're going to do part 2 for sure!
Well i can see that "Beverly Hills Cop" must have been released on Hulu. Considering multiple reactors are doing within days of each other.
We did it because part 4 is coming out soon. 😀
@popculturallychallenged I'd like to see you guys dip into the 60's and 70's more often.
another good movie with Eddie Murphy playing a cop is Showtime, with Robert DeNiro and William Shatner as himself.
Eddie Murphy was funny in another movie from that era called the Golden Child.

The Second Movie is Fantastic!!!
Other great Eddie Murphy Movies:
48 Hours (1 & 2), Trading Places, Boomerang.
Watch all 3:)
Hi guys. R ratings covered violence and other socially unacceptable behavior as well as sex
I actually liked Beverly Hills Cop 3, we get more of Serge.
More 80’s films to watch
48 Hours with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte
Tango And Cash - Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell
See No Evil Hear No Evil - comedy with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor
Stakeout and Another Stakeout with Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez
Just a handful to think about
And Cannonball Run 2
80's was cool but late 90's early 2k's was the sweet spot, the time where practical effect techniques were peaking but tech hadn't quite got to CGI yet so the effects were so much better because they had to be thought out and practically done instead of relying on a computer to do all the effects. Come to think of it, that is also when music started going down hill - or maybe I'm just old and don't get it anymore.
Check out Wild Hogs. Great comedy with John Travolta, Tim Allen and Martin Lawrence
Please do the other two films soon
Hear no evil, See no evil.
80s comedy. Pls watch
1. Movie magic: An entire truck loaded with EMPTY cigarette boxes.
2. IMVHO Eddies' best movies are "Trading Places and "Coming to America"😎😎
3. Serge/Bronson Pinchot was in a funny series "Perfect Strangers".
4. Jenny/Lisa Eilbacher played Segar in "An Officer and a Gentleman" HINT HINT
5. Maitland/Steven Koff is one of the best bad guys ever! He also played the Soviet Colonel in Rambo II.
6. Billy/Judge Reinhold played Brad Hamilton in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".
Part 2 is great. Part 3 is bad but I still enjoyed it.
Sylvester stallone was supposed to star I. This movie but he wanted to make alot of changes to the script so he walked and took his ideas to create the script for Cobra.
You guys should DEFINITELY watch The Impossible 2012 if you haven't already
Stay tuned!
