At some point i started using waves of darkness as the get off me ash of war but if you use it sparingly hoarax loux is definitely still a nice surprise. I just honeslty forgot about it until you mentioned it haha
Chase, my favorite thing about your videos is the display of skill that presents the fact that no matter the weapon or how bad it’s stats look to people, the skill behind the player is what matters in the end. Like in the ER community, you always hear about how some stuff I see you use in videos are trash, meanwhile you win almost every encounter. You’re amazing Chase, keep it up!
Honestly it's mostly people forgetting how degenerate DS3 was like all the regen stacking(420 for Bountiful Light, 360 for Gentle Prayer(13 FP), 240 for Filianore's Chime(18 FP), not to mention a blessed weapon and Sun Princess), Heal spells also had no nerf on the aoe so 1300+ heals for a 4 player gank weren't uncommon(also that's Great Heal's 5.5x modifier so 1358 HP on Yhorksha at 60, Soothing Sunlight heals 1729 and max HP is like 1500 and even embered it's slightly under 2000). Lower max HP in DS3 also means said heals/regens are like 40% better in DS3 relatively speaking. I'm definitely forgetting other things but I spent like an hour refreshing my memory on DS3's numbers since I haven't touched the game in like 6+ months and I'm tired
I stopped taking the PVP seriously once I asked people on the ER discord for build recommendations. I'm into fashion souls and have my preferred weapons, these guys wanted me to go full bullgoat tryhard with powerstanced crouched shield pokes and I was like...nope. If I don't win while looking good doing so, I don't care about winning at all. In all fairness, I mostly do coop anyway (97% of my gametime or so), so even if my group gets invaded I can get a pass for not having an optimized build because win or loss barely matters.
Chase, as a player who exclusively runs straight sword and shield you should run at least 45 stamina to be able to block everything with Brass shield. The block r2 retaliation hits 70% of the time and really good to use in mix ups. Also make sure your brass shield is at least +24 for the 68 guard boost. you can block a great sword giant hunt and follow up with a retaliation with stam to roll with left over. Its surprisingly crazy effective.
Very nice moves. Not sure if the shield was used efficiently enough, but it was certainly nice to see. Felt more of a sword showcase than a shield n sword, though to be fair, you were using the guard to reset your r1’s for strong poise attacks. Barricade shield would have certainly helped in some of those tight situations. Great fights!
Medium shields are boring, sorry, it isn't the WALL of greatshields neither the parry good tool of small shields Sadly they let you put a better parry in medium shields lol
Yo Chase since you run low FP on most of your melee builds give the Carian Filigreed talisman a try, it reduces the fp cost of skills by 25%. I think it'll be especialy useful in those long drawn out invasions, or when you need to travel through the lake of rot, or when you want to spam some Ashes of war like thunderbolt or fires of slumber.
@@darq7000 Can replace his first talisman slot that he already switches around during invasions anyway. Turn it on when he's only got one fp flask left during a drawn out invasion. Or an ash that requires a little more fp. It's just as useful as the dagger talisman considering the effects of the dagger talisman are used only when crit happens, which happens like 3 or 4 times during his invasions, and it's equipped pretty much the whole time. It definitely has it's uses and can be swapped out in a literal second for anything else.
the sword and shield surprisingly still hold up well, it's just that it should be viewed as a secondary play style as spacing is always gonna be more rewarding with less withdrawals
Hey Chase! Ive been doing a spartan build, with a spear, shield, and sword. Sheild poking, sword arts, kicking, the whole 9. I wasnt getting many victiries, but i had fun!
The true Combo from braggarts roar with a collosal weapon is a good way to trade through a shield or guard counter. I've been wanting to try a sword and board build.
Chase I hope you give this another try in the future, but next time try putting bleed or frost on your shield, they get a lot of buildup, specially greatshields. Also curved swords work great with a shield.
Crazy how many blues get summoned. I'm at meta level and always have blue ring on and only get summoned like once an hour. Must be a lot of people with the blue ring on out there.
Things I can recommend for those working on shield gameplay: - Don’t forget about Guard Counters! They come out fairly quick with most weapons, do a lot of PvE poise damage, and can hit hard with Curved Sword Talisman. Use it sparingly in PvP though, with mix-ups to surprise people, and I suggest having high poise and stamina. - Greatshield Talisman is very useful for med and small shields (nerfed hard for greatshields)! The stamina difference is big, and can let block riskier hits and follow up better. Shield Grease also works great, as well! - Having several shields with diff AoWs is very useful, like Chase demonstrated here. Golden Parry is the go-to, but Carian Retaliation helps against casters, and Holy Ground is amazing for emergency regen and standing your ground! - Finally, don’t be like me and try to block someone with Royal Knight Resolve. It doesn’t end well.
The only thing i hate it how often i have to change my build to kill a boss. It reallyjust irks me in the late game like ive been running strength faith builds since ds3 and it worked great in elden ring for quite a while then all of sudden i got to maliketh, then malenia and then godrey and the elden beast. Like yeah you can run strength faith but only in the beginning the end game is so against holy its quite unfair
Do greatshields next. They are great with status effects and have a few surprisingly good ashes of war but with shield talisman and shield grease you can push and block quite a lot.
I am using Axe and Shield on a New game plus and am enjoying it. I also rock Mil Lady and she carried me all the way to the End of Elden Ring DLC. Starting over with all of your equipment was pretty cool.

Just think for a moment that in order for invasions to be a challenge for Chase, he has to deliberately handicap his output. I can't help but to think this is all part of the grand plan training for the hardships and struggle of using the torch of St. Trina, for it is untested.
Yeah a couple of patches ago shield bash and kick both got buffed to do massive stamina damage to shields. It's a really fun way to do trades, even if you do feel like you gotta have a second shield just for parrying in the back pocket.
I absolutely love sheild bash, especially on the fingerprint sheild as it's madness scales with arcane, that plus making it do poison and a bleed weapon make for a volatile combo
@nebulous9280 they definitely can, if your low level you'd have to envest way to much in strength to even use the sheild so it's gonna tank your other stats, plus there's a guard break talisman and crystal tear, the kick ash of war, dual weild jump attacks from great axes-swords and hammers, charged heavy with heavy attack talisman, colossal heavy, charged or jumping heavy and most ashes on colossal, piercing fang ignores all blocks, and strait swords base ash of war square off breaks all guards, any status effects can directly counter as well as magic and throwing items like pots, knives, perfume etc. And bows with or without statis effects have two ashes thay counter as well as just parry them. just don't trade. I personally always keep a counter, lol
Wow the frostbite buildup on the slender is pretty damn good even with no points invested into INT. I guess I'm a fool for not trying frostbite earlier, thinking I needed some decent INT. My DEX build has like 16 INT so I could do this with slightly better results. Before this I've tried using the Keen Slender Sword and using the Frost Weapon spell, but I think that only adds 60 frost buildup, and I've not once actually inflicted frost on an opponent in the arena.
One build that I am thinking in doing is a Mystic Knight, it will use heavy armor + the carian shield + a Scepter with the swords spells, those being Carian Sword, Carian Greatsword, Azula Moonblade, Hainma Hammer, Piercer Sword, I think it can work pretty well the combination of sword + spells

Only currently hitting a bump in the academy since magic damage goes through shield, still having fun with the build though. tips on what stats I should focus on would be nice
Answer to thumbnail question: Against GIANT fast moving, infinite health-bar bosses, heacy armor, enchanted BIG weaon, & an enchanted wall of a shield is an absolute must! (your spirit ash should be your mimic as well)
Why can't the people that invade me ever be chill like you? I would've been willing to play with invasions enabled if that were the case. Setting that aside, it's cool seeing a lot of the hosts you invade were entirely down to straight up fight you, rather than hide behind their phantoms.
The biggest problems with Shield Bash are the low poise damage it does and the amount of endurance it eats up. You manage to read an ash of war, but it doesn't stop them from getting it off and you now have zero stamina. You get nothing out of it but 200ish damage and then, if they're smart, they'll run your ass down because you're out of stamina.
Shield Bash is a duelist's tool. It's completely safe shield bash after an R1 and then roll out. If you're using a fast 1h, you probably just did around 5-600 damage and the only risk you took was a neutral R1. For invasions you use Shield Crash. It does way more damage, activates Winged Sword Talisman, procs statuses, and has a knockdown. The players you meet in invasions have a lower skill level and are unlikely to backstab punish you for it. If they're not lower skill level then you're in for a rough invasion no matter what you do!
Been a big fan since ds3 my go to pvp content creator, you should try both the shield bash ashes of wars on the spiked shield, I don’t have a good build and I do 1100 damage without the shard of Alexander, not counting the bleed proc, much love you should check it out
The one I use is called shield crash, it blocks attacks as your running with it proc-ing bleed to whole run, as it hits the entire time your running with it, and a final hurah push at the end, full combo with the bleed proc is so good
@@kiltysalter2966 Shield Bash is for duels, Shield Crash is for invasions. One is good against skilled players the other against less skilled players where you need a quick kill.
I respec'd my build, been playing ice spear with clayman harpoon and carian slicers. Thinking of what to play now, I'm at the radagon fight for the first time. I like melee builds with some magic and shields, especially the gellyfish one.
A bit of a shame you didn't try to pair Shield Bash with the Cleanrot Knight's Sword. In my first play thru I found that to be the best pairing with shields, since the attack animation follows up pretty quickly post stun. But that was before all the poise changes in the latest patch. So idk how aggressive you can be with said setup now.
Hey chase. Any chance you wanna do dual straight swords? They've got my favorite moveset in the game and I really enjoyed my last (and best) playthrough with them
RoB and Moonveil are generally why I dislike katanas since most players aimlessly rely on its aow but it is refreshing to say the least to see some weapon variety in these videos.

can't believe Chase killed Seu Madruga/Don Ramon, now he'll have to pay his debt!
first time playing a fromsoft souls game seriously (I only briefly played DS3) and haven't been convinced to switch away from brass shield and lordsworn straight sword.
My build for my playthrough was Sacree Lordsworn longsword, brass shield with barricade, counters, and some incantations.
@saintsword23 +1 to everything you said

Been a big fan since ds3 my go to pvp content creator, you should try both the shield bash ashes of wars on the spiked shield, I don’t have a good build and I do 1100 damage without the shard of Alexander, not counting the bleed proc, much love you should check it out
The one I use is called shield crash, it blocks attacks as your running with it proc-ing bleed to whole run, as it hits the entire time your running with it, and a final hurah push at the end, full combo with the bleed proc is so good
Shield crash can be parried, and guard broken very easily. Shield bash is way better.
@@kiltysalter2966 are you certain shield crash can be parried ? And all you need is the shield talisman
@@kiltysalter2966 Shield Bash is for duels, Shield Crash is for invasions. One is good against skilled players the other against less skilled players where you need a quick kill.
i think the most impressive thing here is how many noble's slender swords chase farmed for this video
Always love the content!
Now how about a Black Iron Tarkus setup?
I respec'd my build, been playing ice spear with clayman harpoon and carian slicers. Thinking of what to play now, I'm at the radagon fight for the first time. I like melee builds with some magic and shields, especially the gellyfish one.
A bit of a shame you didn't try to pair Shield Bash with the Cleanrot Knight's Sword. In my first play thru I found that to be the best pairing with shields, since the attack animation follows up pretty quickly post stun.
But that was before all the poise changes in the latest patch. So idk how aggressive you can be with said setup now.
that first fight was crazy
I'm impressed with how quick you can change equipments during fights. Do you play on keyboard and mouse?
Hey chase. Any chance you wanna do dual straight swords? They've got my favorite moveset in the game and I really enjoyed my last (and best) playthrough with them
dudes sneak attacks were on point
R1 into cartwheels a true combo.
More of this… so satisfying
Chase the blueberry farmer. 😂
Glad to see the game so populated.
RoB and Moonveil are generally why I dislike katanas since most players aimlessly rely on its aow but it is refreshing to say the least to see some weapon variety in these videos.
"That's not even Guts cosplay"
They rarely ever are.
Chase vs the one man (with an) army
FLAILS CHASE! PLEASE! FER THE LOVE OF GOD FLAILS!
I'm gonna post a comment requesting it until you do haha, but no pressure man I'll love your content either way. I just really like flails.
That first clip was amazing
Blues came in like crazy, same over here on another invade i had… no idea why they spawn so fast sometimes
