Instead of 3 spirits, make it 4. Then make them represent each of the elements. Maybe make them look like crystals while your at it?
(Insert Final Fantasy cartridge joke here)
there are 8 spirits
ツ divide that by 2

Gee, an Epic RPG where you collect four crystals of the elements! Never heard that one before.
I played Spirits Within, but I think my disc was broken. It just played all the cinematics.
Yeah, everyone had the same problem. They must've shipped the wrong discs or something...
Were you guys playing Disc 1? They accidentally mislabeled Disc 2 as the first disc; Disc 2 is just a compilation of the FMVs.
You think your so cute with that comment don't you?
Your actually pretty fucking clever.

The thing that bugs me about this movie is Ming-Na Wen’s performance.
She is a FANTASTIC actress (giving solid performances everytime!)
I don’t know there was a time crunch or direction problems during production, but she stumbles into some strange line deliveries in this movie, as if she recorded everything in a day.
Well, Square DID want to push Aki as a CGI actress for multiple movies, so the flat delivery was more than likely an intentional direction for Ming-Na Wen (who IS a terrific actress, yeah; I enjoyed her performances in Mulan and Star Wars) to sell the character as someone that could be squeezed in multiple roles. But the decision was a grave error, for sure; it left the audience uncaring about what happens to Aki, and if there's anything an author very much needs to avoid, it's the eight deadly words of "I don't care what happens to (this person/these people)".
Bad voice acting is almost always due to bad direction.
a Final Fantasy with no crazy spikey hair and crazy looking armor is no Final Fantasy at all!

Let's not forget that Max from Life is Strange (also a Square Enix game) actually loves this movie XD
I forgot LIS was SE. Huh.
Well, to be fair, it's only published by SE. Dontnod developed it, and they aren't owned by SE. Their previous game (Remember Me) was Capcom and their next one (Vampyr) is Focus Home Interactive.
Koncreet-Outfit Oh. Good to know. I thought it was strange they had anything to do with this game.
Koncreet-Outfit If that's the case, then why did Dontnod make Max a fan of the movie, if they're not owned by SE? As some sort of inside joke or something?
Fernando Langalú Because the game was published by SE. And like you said, as an in-joke. Dontnod isn't owned by Square Enix, as their newest game Vampyr is being published by Focus Home Interactive.
I remember watching this movie in theater with all my nerdy friends. It was so bad we just had to get knackered at the Applebee's across the street.
Where I come from "knackered" means "exhausted" so it sounds like you all went to Applebee's to sleep😴
9:59 Silly soldier, there's only one guy who can stab a phantom, and that's because he's created a special stabbing technique, and mastered the art.
That guy's name...
is Joof.
The fabled joof stab
Okay, so I think I might have figured out why that phantom went all blue after touching Aki's... womb. See, when she and what's-his-name engaged in low-gravity bonking, they didn't use protection and she became pregnant. This created a new life within her, fresh from Gaia, which worked as Kryptonite and infected the spirit when it touched it.
So yeah. Maybe that part makes a BIT more sense than it does at first glance.
Still stupid, though.
Was hoping to see some space banging to be amused by the uncanny-ness, but not even that.. Anyway, what you are saying is right and would be a cool twist, if only there was some logic in the movie, and a bit of consistency with the rules. This movie could have been really good, if it had someone that has done movies before at the helm, and anyone BUT the actress that voiced Aki in the role.
MoffMupp So... Space abortion.
The director confirms Aki was pregnant in the commentary on the DVD.

The part about this movie bombing that upsets me more than anything else is that Square was planning on taking all Final Fantasy games released up to this point (FF9 was the latest release) and porting them over to the PS2 with updated graphics and gameplay. However, they lost so much on the film's terrible box office return that they scrapped the project before it got too far off the ground.
Wait a minute I didn't know that thanks for letting me know

@@Kreiser_VII what was that if u don't mind me asking
That's bullshit!
That could've given us an FFVII remake fifteen years before the actuall remake happened.
Me sad.
I love how much respect Jared has for FF9. So much of the music he uses is from 9
Remember when Final Fantasy was all about knights and mages and kingdoms and shit? What the fuck happened, Square?
Well, FF always had it's scifi elements too.
I agree. I liked the mages and knights and all that old stuff. I also liked the more science fictionesque ff7, but I feel like square enix tries way to hard these days to make everything "new and fresh". I really hope FFXVI will be more about mages and knights again. we haven't got a ffgame like that since IX and that's sad.
Purple Dawn Well, they've Bravely Default for that now.
Psaakyrn GW so they say, but it doesn't feel the same. I dont dislike bravely default, but it does not replace final fantasy. People compare it to FF all the time, but I don't feel it. Next FF should go back to its roots. We've got 4 games in a row now that follows the new style. Time to try the old one again I think.
The very first game had ridiculous time travel bullshit in it that made no fucking sense at all.
My favourite Final Fantasy game is the one where Ichigo puts a gun on his head and summons his stand.
My favorite FF game was the one where Ness beats the shit out of evil dogs with a bat and yo-yo.
My favorite FF game is the one where you have 12 classes, control 6 elemental creatures at a time, and build up a town with shit you find in a forest, a mountain, and a river.
My favourite FF game was the one where you're a psychic space soldier with a katana and knight armor and shot raiders with afros
My favorite Final Fantasy game is the one with Cory in the white house
Wait a minute, my favorite Final Fantasy has 12 classes, 6 creatures and 3 locations?! That's a pattern of halves with things that are divisible by 3! FINAL FANTASY 6 CONFIRMED!!!
I really miss medieval Final Fantasy
Spoonman I don’t. Steampunk Final Fantasy is best Final Fantasy. I’m still wondering how they jumped from gas pipes, brown rusted out metal, steam trains, Mako reactors and stuff like that to Sci-if technology, spirits, and aliens in the course of the 4 years between FF7 and this movie though.
I do too ;-;
@@justanotheryoutubechannel Fuck you. We felt like we need to bring back the good old retro game that release from the NES and SNES games like collect the 4 crystals, turn base strategy RPGs, a medieval theme with a little of Sci Fi ish theme like Zelda Breath of the Wild, and some stuff from the MMOs. The problem is that the franchise disappear some roots from the game and turn into a generic Sci Fi RPG that more like a clone of Star Trek rather than Final Fantasy. And I HATE what happen to FF7 that Fuck up the Entire Timeline with some games related to 7.
Same. IV and IX had some of the best settings.
Your in luck, 16 is coming to fix that problem lickity split.
Honestly, Aki would have been a great character to wield Magic
It's like with Final Fantasy 4 and 6
Magic is a foreign entity, stemming from the Phantoms, and since Aki is bound to one she could therefore wield Magic innately
It seems like a natural fit, instead of having the Phantom just be a mystical cancer deus ex machina
Missed opportunity there
Just call them Espers instead!
You know, in hindsight this movie perfectly forewarns the overwritten nonsense than Final Fantasy would eventually become.
and the shift towards "science" over magic, FF7 and 8 really really started this too.
FF15 might be good, but its basically so close to "realistic" stuff that it shatters what final fantasy is, now its just 4 dudes driving around in a sports car wearing suits.
ugh. I wrote a comment and lost it DX
I don't think you can point to one specific thing in FF history and say "THIS is where it all went wrong." There might be games that introduced a larger amount of things but it's interesting to see in hindsight how things that people criticse in the modern games started showing up way earlier than I'd realised :)
FF7 was a vast departure from the previous FF games, and it probably contributed to this too, but I myself at least consider FF7 to still be good as a story. And although complicated it wasn't so over written as the series eventually became. But I do agree it was largely responsible for the more "science" side of FF happening. But I don't think that's where the true problem lies :) the problem is the writing, not the setting.
Although at this stage maybe Squeenix could try and do something more fantasy and less science just to break away from their rut. But we'll see what FF15 is when it comes out. I'm not holding my breath though. Sadly.
Liezl Bohnen FFVII had a completely shit story XD

It had been like this since FF7 honestly

As great a storyteller Sakaguchi is, this not one of his finest efforts. He was just out of his league in trying to craft a movie story running just under 2 hours, which is completely different from a video game story which unfolds through several segments and chapters. The movie was very slow with mostly boring dialogue and uninteresting characters. Any connection to Final Fantasy was almost nonexistent. Only the groundbreaking CGI effects and models is what kept this movie from being totally forgotten, for they have aged incredibly well, and will always be the movie's best aspect. Despite failing it's target audience (FF fan base), there's still a dedicated fanfare for the movie, and that's good enough to ensure Spirits Within will never be forgotten.
When I put this in for the first time I thought this was a Mass Effect movie.
The best part of this video was how you managed to match good Final Fantasy game's music up with what was happening in the movie. No really, it fit incredibly well to every scene you chose and I can appreciate that. Good job Jared!

There is one other "Final Fantasy" staple, albeit this one is a bit subtle.
The concept of Gaia, and the idea of the planet being alive with an identity, are themes that have appeared in several "Final Fantasy" games. The most well-known is obviously "Final Fantasy VII", which had its own version of this concept in the Life Stream.
But yeah, at the end of the day this was a forgettable movie.
I was going to say, this is just some lifestream crap renamed xd
The planet in FFVII is also called Gaia IIRC
It's also the name of the planet in IX
The first thing I think of when I think of Final Fantasy is spirit energy wibble-woo that no amount of droning exposition can really make much sense of. They had that part down.
The first things I, personally, think of are 'crystals' and 'Phoenix Down'.
Oh, and 'turn-based and menu-based fighting system'.
I'm not exactly thrilled that the last one is disappearing - my first-ever videogame was Pokémon Pearl, and the Pokémon main series games use a similar 'turn-based, menu-based fighting system'. As a result, I'm quite partial to this method of gameplay.
That's not really a Final Fantasy thing though, since many other games and such have also given the planet a spiritual essence, making that not so much a defining feature of Final Fantasy, as much as a general fantasy trope.
Still better than _The Last Airbender_.
Nice.
Ergggh...

So, true story, this is how I encountered this pile myself:
Had a PS1, played all kinds of Squaresoft games on it, including FFs. Didn't know about the ENIX merger soon to ruin everything yet, and didn't have a PS2, so Squaresoft was my idol, single-handedly making my childhood. Saw a DVD of this pile in a store randomly. Got a bit confused it's not a game instead. Watched it. CG was impressive to a point but otherwise I was left wondering what any of this was about and how it relates to FF. *ENDED UP THINKING THEY MISLABELED THE DVD BY ACCIDENT.*
*says Final Fantasy VI is his favorite*
*pulls out Final Fantasy III*

This is a major rule broken! In my review of this movie, I was fighting GHOSTS TOO!
Don't you see? It had to take place on earth. How else would they get their product placements in?
*+Daniel F.* Seeing as the only product placement from this movie that I know about is Pepsi, they could have gone the clever wrought and made Pepsi an actual product in whichever world they created which served the same purpose as either potion or ether; yes, people would have said that they sold out, but at least they would have done something creative with it.

Does this movie even have anything to do with the Final Fantasy series? Other than the name?
Fun fact: It's not even Cid, it's Sid.
A completely over complicated plot?
Every Final Fantasy game has some sort of underlying theme about nature and Earth. Some games have it much more noticeable (seven,) in others it is much more subtle (six.) This movie just brought the nature and Earth them front and center, as opposed to an underlayer within the plot.
I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but I think that the shot from the Zeus Cannon was called Ultima at one point. Either that, or the people who made the Spanish subtitles knew more about the game than the movie scriptwriter
Does final fantasy have anything to do with final fantasy beyond the name? we have leather clad boy bands on road trips now.
For everyone yelling about guns and spaceships in Final Fantasy, they have those in 6 onward
Earlier, even. in Final Fantasy 4, you literally fly to the moon. And have people seen how technologically advanced the interior of the Tower of Babel appears?
yep amen. lol
The thing is, FF always had the "technology from an ancient culture" at some point in the game.
In FF6 technology and its combination with magic was part of the plot and even then, said technology was not common, only used by the rich and powerful.
After that it just got mainstream, filling the games to the brim with technological advancements just because they "looked cool" with absolutely no regard for how it would affect the story.
Not really. Only 7, 8 and 13 had "advanced tech." 9 returned to the medieval with ancient tech, 10 had some advance stuff but it was a plot point and kinda in tone with the story. 12 was more or less like 9 and classic FF. 14 is kinda the same. Haven't played 15 but looks like it's another advanced tech or at least modern. So that's like 4 out of 15 games, and to be fair, even in those games, the technology felt in tone with the rest of the game so not really sure what you mean by having no regard for the story.
WARMECH.
"NO FUCKING SHIT!"
Oh my god I rewatched that part five times!
I loved this movie. Hell, I own it on DVD, Blu-Ray UMD and the paperback novelization.
Actually, gotta say, the novelization is probably the best way to experience The Spirits Within. It sets everything up right from the beginning and doesn't leave too much up in the air.
I keep hearing that about novelizations, they're usually better than many, many shitty movies.
How could you enjoy this movie? I felt like I clearly wasted my time purchasing it and watching it. It did so many things wrong and the only thing that was good was the CGI. The creators only tried to make it look "good."
+Zack Devro Idk, I guess I didn't go into it with too much expectations. I had a fun time with it, even when I saw it in theaters.
+Matt (leon14344) It's just very mediocre. I didn't have any expectations for it either, but I have developed a solid opinion after watching so many movies and I can detect when the creators did not honestly care for big details when I'm watching any movie. They cared only about how it looked, not only that, when I could tell they strayed so far away from a typical Final Fantasy narrative to just another sci-fi flick I had to give up on it. I watched the majority of it feeling disappointed all the way to the end.
They call them Phantoms because they have physical properties similar to ghosts in mythology, not because they actually thought that they were ghosts. As far as they know, those are just some random energy beings ala Star Trek.
Also, while I agree that it's not very much of a Final Fantasy movie, other Final Fantasy elements it has are their Lifestream equivalent, Random Encounters, and the general New Age technobabble. Not to mention that the meteor is very reminiscent of the Northern Crater and Jenova (or really, the Terran invasion From FFIX, though I think that came after Spirits Within).
lnsflare1 There's also Cid (okay, here it's spelt "Sid" I believe).
And you can't tell me this movie has a lesser resemblance to its source than, say, Mario Bros. My god. I'd maybe argue Street Fighter, which kinda resembles its parent franchise via what looks like a host of cheap cosplay. At least that film is hilarious, though.
And should I bring up Double Dragon?
That's his point, they think that they're similar enough to ghost to call them phantoms, but don't consider that they may actually be spirts.
Kye Dysarthria but per his other point, they're inconsistent enough to think they are animals. They go corporeal at times, seemingly bleed at times, can be shot down (and eviscerated) with firearms. In most cultures folklore, your sidearm or rifle is in no way an answer for an actual ghost. But hey, this is Final Fantasy lol

Hah, saw this thing in theaters. The cool cgi at the time was the only reason to see it.
Non-sexualized female protagonists and characters were actually very common in sci-fi movies before and around that time. Ellen Ripley from Alien, Trinity from The Matrix, Dana Scully fom The X-Files, Jodie Foster in Contact, Sarah Connor from The Terminator, any woman from Star Trek, Jamie Lee Curtis in Virus... In fact, you'd be more hard pressed finding any who _were_ sexualized, without going back to the early 80s or 70s.
You have to admit, this movie looks great.
Also, I loved this movie the one time I watched it when I was a kid at my grandparents house.
I never got why they didn't just base this move off one of the games. I mean, take 6, and turn THAT into a movie.
Or did Square somehow think that a movie about a ragtag group of rebels lead by a youth with super powers as they fight off an evil empire that's trying to rule all of existence through advanced technology wouldn't sell?
FF6's story is too long to adapt to a single movie.
GreatAwesomeReviewers | StarDust Studios Now that the plot is put into simple terms, I now realize FF7 copied the shit outta FF6.
Joey Weirdo Erase Advanced Tech- scratch that, put it that way it's the plot of FFII.
GreatAwesomeReviewers | StarDust Studios Six is too long, as is many of the others. If any were to be turned into a movie I'd say 4 would be the easiest to condense provided they be given a two and a half hour run time
Well some stuff would have to be excised. That's no different than book adaptations.
Dragon Ball Evolution
The video game movie
okay
Could be worse.
Street Fighter: The Movie - The Game.
+Marcus Vinicius Quintas Filho street fighter the board game the movie the game
GAME... OVER!!!
because the dragon ball franchise has video games and jared likes some of them so yeah
You mean, The Game - The Movie - The Game?
10:17 - They're eating him... and then they're gonna eat me. OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!
I might have an explanation. When they get touched, the spirit disappears. They can’t eat it. To eat it, they need to grab the spirit, which is harder.
Rewatching this years later, The Spirits Within feels more like a new Mass Effect than Andromeda.
Steve Buscemi. What are you doing here!?!?
Dying pointlessly, like in most of his movies. I think it's in his contract.
+nightsong81 poor Donny.
He was out of his element.
+nightsong81 wouldn't have lasted in Vietnam.
+Tallguy He should've shut the fuck up like Walter told him to.
Am I the only one who likes advent children? It's not great but the final fight seen was awesome!
I'm pretty sure most people only like Advent Children for Cloud vs Sephiroth :P
Certainly not, I really enjoyed Advent Children, as you said it's not the greatest movie but, the action scenes were excellent.
The only reason to watch Advent Children really is for the few fight scenes. They're well animated and choreographed, but nothing else really sticks. I never understood what was going on (as someone who hasn't actually played FFVII through), and mostly just seemed like emo fluff to get to the good stuff.
Advent Children was one of the worst films I had ever had the displeasure of watching. Granted I hadn't really played FFVII prior to that. So the fanservice, which is the only thing anyone could potentially like, did nothing for me. (Also I suspect if I knew who the characters were their motivations would have made some sense to me.) Basically, I can see why people might like it, but it's awful as a movie because it makes no attempt to be accessible.
The original version of the movie is bad but the other version titled Final Fantasy VII:Advent Children Complete was decent the fight scenes were fleshed out more the story was a lot more cohesive and in all honesty as long as you knew most of the Final Fantasy 7 story you where set i watched it only having played FF7 Crisis Core and having watched a rundown of the FF7 plot online and i loved it.
I really really really appreciate the song choices that were played over the clips. Thanks for the awesome video!
Is it just me or does it seem like this video was pretty unscathed from trolls?
They only really did the more recent vids
Felix And the oldest ones.
to be fair, a lot of people bought the accusations since they were initially pretty convincing.
honestly, I think the movie is just that horrible that it scared people off from coming to meme comment in here.
Lord Typh Well said.
I dont think they were trolls they just believed the only info we had on the situation.
"It's not an invasion."
(Insert Earth barely devoid of all live)
"Not an invasion"
(Insert the massacre of humans by the hands of the phantoms)
*"Not an invasion."*
(Insert the fact that they're very hostile and attack everything on sight)
*Not an invasion*
"Invasion- an unwelcome intrusion into another's domain."
-OMG Talk to me sarg
- *impaled by a metal bar* Ouch
This movie must be written by geniuses
I gotta say
Even though this movie is bad, the animation is VERY impressive for its time
I swear, that’s some of the best CG I’ve seen in my life
Going through a bit of a rough patch, and this channel has just totally brightened my mood. Thank you, sir, for all the laughs and great content ✌
FINAL FANTASY 13 IS A GOOD GAME
no
if you love hallways.
Nice try SquareEnix
Eh, there are worse games.
There are still much better games, though.
is a good game, bad as a Final Fantasy game, but a good game itself
Can you imagine Jared's reaction if they made a Monster Hunter Movie and it was bad?
That would be hilarious!
Oh my gosh! It actually came true!
Welp, your wish came true. Not only is there a Monster Hunter movie, but they gave it to Paul Anderson (The same guy who put a Mary Sue OC in Resident Evil). Projared is gonna be very pissed.
Regen King I can feel the anger...
Oh boy, the pictures coming out..
You provided better acting than everyone in the movie. :D
PHANTOMS ARE GHOSTS!?
I remember buying and watching this movie so many times, still own it.
well kingsglaive looks like a step up.
It looks like a staircase up
It's like Heaven and Hell. Kingsglaive was great. Pretty sure I saw Ultros in it.
Really? Ultros is always fun
Brayden Aitkenhead it's not, Kingsglaive is shit too
mostmelon oh yeah because fanservice automatically makes something good....outside of ecchi
"7th spirt!? I didn't know we were on disc 4 already" fucking died
My marathon of rewatching, liking, and commenting on every Jared video continues. Video 38
This entire movie feels like a cutscene
The worst thing about Aki being sexualized is not just that she was objectified. It's that Aki was named after and somewhat based off of Hironobu Sakaguchi's mother who passed away a few years before that movie was made.
I know the death of Sakaguchi’s mother was what inspired the Aerith death twist in Final Fantasy VII.
😢
7:10 where's Chell? I thought she was the president of the being alive club.
She’s the past president
That one General guy got the same voice as Hades from the Disney movie and its freakin me out
What!?!
The phantoms are actually what there name implies! Crazy
