This problem could have been easily avoided, if OP just used a common sense and didn't share passwords, cc details with anyone and enabled 2FA. Well, the second problem is that this is most likely purely the underdevelopment of American banking. I can't imagine a situation where someone uses my card in Europe or any post-Soviet developed country without my knowledge and I don't find out about it immediately.
IDK... most US banks flag large/atypical purchases and have numerous means of notifying their customer of purchases over a pre-set $$ amount. But I second you, this person seemed to be too trusting w/ sharing $$ info, especially when the family doesn't have a good track record w/ their entitlement to their child's money. But these are lessons that are usually taught by parents and something tells me these types of parents are not likely to share that info to their kid they profit from...
