- Is Thailand still the King in South East Asia for affordable living?
or has Cambodia seized the Crown????
Come with me as I tour Cambodia and answer the age old question,,,,
Is Thailand cheaper than Cambodia and where is the best place to retire in South East Asia?
Check out Andy's Place on Booking.com! www.booking.co...
Your videos helped lead me to a great visit to Thailand this month. I was ecstatic when I found you while searching Cambodia! Thank You Doc!
That's awesome brother
Thanks for the wonderful compliment and welcome to the Trainwreck that is my life,,,.

Hey Mark, so far your analysis is showing so much value. I'm definitely staying tuned for part 2.... thanks for sharing matey!
Hey John thanks for watching brother I truly wish i was still in Thailand at the meeting...
Lol
Terribly sick mate.
Very interesting... I would love to see some 1 bedroom longer stay options. I'm looking forward to more from you regarding Cambodia for sure. Thanks Doc!
Will do
Cheers mate 🍺
Excellent video! Thanks to you, I'm going to have to put Cambodia on my bucket list.
You should!
There are some great things about Cambodia....
Definitely worth the visit,,,,,
You can do the same in Vietnam too, only problem is the long term visa, which in Cambodia is simple to do! I’ve been to Cambodia a number of times, it’s ok, you should try Bali, it’s good value too and a lot more interesting culture imo! Still Thailand for me, been living in Jomtien/Pratumnak well over 3 years, better overall lifestyle, it’s easy to travel to other countries. I’ve been to Laos, Philippines, Bali, Nepal, India, Turkey while keeping my base in Thailand, can’t beat the advantage of living near Bangkok for the ease of travelling! In two weeks I’am visiting family in the U.K. and Greece, most flights are cheaper from Bangkok, which is 143baht on the bus, Jomtien to Suvarnabhumi Airport!
Thanks for the tips!!!
Yes every place you've mentioned is nice,,,
I would marginally disagree on the culture aspect of Bali over Siem Reap Cambodia though,,,,,
But yes Bali is beautiful ..
Cheers mate 🍺
“interesting”? read a little history, what this poor country has been through. genocide, for one.
Donald I doubt you would find anyone that knows more about the history of Cambodia and all of South East Asia than I do,,,,,
Trust me mate I'm the last person that anyone should tell to "read a little history",,,,
Lol
I've been studying SEA my whole life,,,, that's why I don't spent every waking moment in bars chasing skirts,,, instead I spend hours and hours at the temple soaking in everything about Angkor and the historical sites throughout this part of the world.....
Ta Prohm Temple is my favourite place in the entire world,,, had been there over 20 times in my life!!!!!!
The sad thing is 8m actually going to dona video today directly talking about your comment as well as someone else's,,,,
No negativity mate,,,just some basic truth
But yeah trust me there are very very few people that appreciate the history here more than I.......
@donaldcroom1483 what's the point of your comment?
Good insight. So many other things to take into consideration though when comparing the 2 countries. Infrastructure, beaches/scenery, healthcare, culture etc. Got me thinking though.
Hey man and that's why I say at the end ill be doing more investigation and letting people know my thoughts of here,,,,
This was a vlog about Siem Reap
As we are in rainy season....
The beaches are not he best places to be at the moment
Keep watching
You forgot the dating scene
Cambodia has hookers too. "Dating scene" really?😂 Cambodia has more traditional better women than Thailand could ever hope to have. If you're looking to catch a disease then Thailand beats all but the Congo maybe.
True enough -- I believe I would prefer living in Siem Reap and just visit Thailand. But I'm old and want to relax mostly. A visit for medical exam and a Big Mac once or twice a year......... 🤗
Awesome Video Mark. Keep these videos coming . You make me want to jump on a plane right now. Cheers to you man . 🍻🍻
Come on over,,, o need a cameraman
Lol .
Cheers mate 🍺
Love it! Looking forward to visiting! Thanks, Dr Mark!
My brother you will visit and then you will leave!!!!
You never fail to impress Mark. Nice job. Cambodia is impressive, and the costs are insane. I love the fact you could go to a pub and not be harassed. Is it the same near the water? You are quite inland
I'm not sure I'm going to be heading to the coast this trip I might save that and come back because we are in rainy season so there's not much sense of going down and being stuck in a slightly overpriced room (Lol) while it pours outside
Cheers mate 🍺
Not all backpackers are broke..
Mark….great video….answered many of my questions.
Hey Steve glad you liked it
Cheers mate 🍺
Excellent VIDEO Doc 😊. Cambodia never even entered my mind. Add one more to the Bucket List 🪣.
Get here
Believe me you'll like
Long term,,,, I'm not so sure!!!!
Omg wow can't believe how cheap it is can't wait to get over there by end of the year. Great video as always 👍 👌 👏
Hey Larry thanks for watching and commenting
And yeah you'll be shocked by how cheap it is,,,,,
Same. That's when I graduate with my degree and can actually teach in Cambodia. It's gonna be awesome!
How do they compare in terms of ease to communicate, safety, beaches, friendliness/welcoming of expats? Looks like really good value there.
Hey Justin
No beach sadly, but southeastern Cambodia has incredible beaches and islands.......
So far communication has been a breeze and the people seems super friendly...
Just the tuk tuk drivers can be annoying as heck...

@@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean Doc, the last time I was there was 10 years ago. I’m sure lots has changed since then. Currently, I live in Chiangmai and debating whether back to Vietnam again or Cambodia after watching your episodes it makes me want to go to Cambodia, will see. Thanks!
Hey brother I'm actually heading to Vietnam next week....
And I'll be honest with you things probably have not changed here in 10 years

Arent electricity rates higher than in thailand?
No I actually brother as it turns out electricity rates are higher in Thailand than they are in Cambodia.....
Thanks judging off your video I'm relocating to Cambodia thank a lot video is very informative
Hey mate I love Cambodia,,,, at least Siem Reap anyways
Lol
The rest,,,,, not so much
Cheers
The comparison here in this video is so accurate for Siem Reap . It is certainly from what I've experienced the best value in South East Asia . If we were to compare the two capital cities however , then Bangkok would probably be better value than Phnom Penh . Siem Reap is a good base for an extended stay with an international airport if the occasional trip to neighboring countries is necessary.
I hated Phnom Penh
I just found a nice room in Phnom Penh with a bed, free wifi and a western bathroom for only $55/month. Way cheaper than my friend's $217/month apartment on Sukhumvit in Bangkok. All the foreigners just buy a Honda Click in Phnom Penh for $600 and then sell it to another foreigner, when to leave. No license or insurance required for 125 cc and smaller!
And the good Doctor was never seen in Thailand again... 😂
Not quite,,,,
I'll be home soon enough....
Can you talk about handling the hot humid weather in either country? And can you talk about retirement age North Americans and the usual amenities such as medical and health services?
Amazingly cheap Doc . Great vlog . Might be somewhere I would consider at an age where I would be content staying put & my thirst for adventure & travel was exhausted
Accomodation dirt cheap .Electric 0.25 cts unit - expensive.
I admire the couple " Living Their Best Life " on $1k monthly .That requires a skill set to adapt & modify their needs , which for most people is unfathomable .
and that's the problem is that most people cannot adapt nor can they understand that most of the s*** that they're buying and wasting their money on is exactly that just s*** that they're wasting their money on.....
I will say this much though you can see so much and do so many things here that if you have a taste for travel if you have a taste for adventure you can satisfy it here.....
I've got a few friends that have moved across to Cambodia now just for the cheaper living and easier visa's, people who had lived in Thailand over a decade
Hey Glen yeah a lot of guys are making that move,,,,
I am going to dona video about the type of guy that's coming here,,,,,
Expats were fleeing Vietnam into Cambodia as well earlier this year. So hard to work in Vietnam anymore they said.
A little thing about the money, most expats actually use the local currency riel as the problem with dollars is if there is the smallest defect in the note then nobody will let you use it but with riels no such problem.
This is true Jason
Same as in in Vietnam,,,,.
Cheers mate 🍺
Thanks for the tip
Plus the ATMs only give out $100 notes which can be difficult to change. ATMs also dispense Riel in varying amounts. Much easier to deal with.
Hi good doctor. I enjoy your vlogs. Keep up the good work.👍👍 I to like Cambodia

Hi Mark!
Great vlog mate, definitely floating my boat.
Anymore detail on coastal areas upcoming, visa and bank accounts in the future? 👍
That will come in the following months bro

The quality, size and richly-furnished rooms of hotels and apartments is far superior in Cambodia than anything available anywhere in the Philippines where rooms look like bare, whitewashed, mini-rooms with no decor. Having lived in both countries I have seen and lived in the nice ones and the way-less-than-nice accomodations.
I've heard this from a few guys now...
I know a couple guys that are really struggling there in The Philippines....

Mark i belief you concerning the food.
But, frome Europe we only get warnings about Combodia,
They say : bad medical situations / safety issues / for example : stay on the pads dont go into small streets / street robbery’s on a daily base.
Dont drink water / no icecubes/ pickpockers. Ect ect ..
What have you seen until
now.
Frome here (netherlands )absolute unsafe to go to Combodia !?
it's actually funny that you say that because Canada just released a safety travel warning against coming to Thailand of all places...
I have heard some pretty crazy things about Cambodia but myself personally I've never witnessed anything..
but again I don't really put myself into situations where I have to be too concerned about my safety...
I was planning on doing a quick blog about how safe it is to travel in southeast Asia
Hopefully I'll get that done over the next couple of days...

S$ 700 to 800 a month in Siem Reap. That's all without restrictions on good food.
I agree 💯
No question that is extremely doable and allows for fun as well as a great life

Sold! I am coming to Cambodia. I was going to the Phils, but after being scammed badly since April, I have lost any love for that place.
it's so funny that you say that because I was just talking to a subscriber who lives in the Philippines and he was telling me that he had brownouts for the past 3 days they had no power at all no internet down on the island that he lives on there's no way I could live there....
I could definitely live a few months out of the year in Siem Reap but not in Phnom Penh

Another great video. Nicely done. I did hear a lot of expats are leaving Thailand for Cambodia. I lived in Patong for one year and I was surprised how expensive it was for farang. I lived in Los Angeles for 20 years, and a lot of prices in Patong was LA prices. Even the beer was LA prices...lololol. You go on Bangla Road, it's from 120-200 baht. The most expensive I have seen is 300 baht. And this is for Thai Local beer. 200 Baht is 5-6 bucks, That's how much a beer is in La...lololol.
Phuket is not cheap. Probably the highest region in any of Thailand. Nice area though and you pay a premium for it.
@@mapleleafdavid yes definitely
hey Chad I have heard a lot of people are heading out of Thailand especially if they're living down on Phuket because it can be expensive however as I have shown in most of my videos if you're willing to look around for a deal you can find them on Phuket myself brother I would never pay those prices for beer especially on Bangla road....
I pay 60 no more!!!
but here you can sit down in a really nice bar and have a bottle of beer yes it's local beer but still it's good 33 Baht
I like to say that Phuket can be as expensive or as affordable as you make it yourself...
Cheers mate 🍺
Oh there's no question put cat is the most expensive place in Thailand possibly Koh Samui would be close???
the thing you need to keep in mind is most people go there on holiday so of course it's going to be more expensive for someone living full-time unless they can budget and compromise with themselves like I do.....
I just talked to two different guys that just moved to Pattaya and are paying 5000 baht/month for condos by Jomtien Beach.
I was in Phnom Phen during Songkran(Thai) they now have an app to use for your choice of taxis...easy and cheap..good deal
Awesome whats the name of the App???

Thanks for the vid. Daily living , Cambodia is cheaper than Thailand. I have heard that when it comes to medical, specifically serious medical treatment even in PP, many times they fly you to Thailand assuming they take you. So access to high level medical treatment , medical costs, health insurance, Thailand is better I have heard. I do not know if you have done such a video but could you do a video about medical treatments such as surgeries etc please.
I have heard similar stories and then I've heard contrasting stories...
I would love to do a video about this but I'm honestly not am expert and finding someone who is,,,,, let's just say this ,,,,,, it's not easy

Oh and please do info on having girl friend in Cambodia just like your other videos on transaction relationship's in Thailand and do a comparison. lolololololol.... Pattaya is way cheaper than Phuket (Patong).
@@TheChadNapier yes I know, but we're talking Cambodia here. I already been to Phuket and Pattaya a couple of times and just looking for something else.
@@stevek343 When I lived in Patong for one year, a lot of the expats were talking about Cambodia. But, at the time, I went to Phuket with the Sandbox Program during the end of the pandemic. They were not doing Land borders or anything at that time.
Steve K: Catch a train or flight to CAM while you're visiting Thailand. I might in a few weeks. Not just because it costs less. I'm looking f/ a place in S.E. Asia to live. Climate, transportation, WiFi, safety. Plus I don't drink
@@bijanbayne3259 I just might do that. I booked the flight to Thailand and I guess I can cancel the hotel in Pattaya and just go to Cambodia instead. I checked out the flights so not sure how much the train costs and how to catch one?

Sounds like the only down side might be scooter rental prices ? -- With all the other savings for nearly everything a rental might be worth it or just pay for up to $100/month for rides may be enough and end up cheaper? -- Travel may cost more out of country but if you don't do much of it....... Thanks for the 'heads up' and the truth about costs. -- A $ 1200 budget might be a very good life w/o extravagance for a single person with good health insurance ?
I think if you stayed up in this region you would be more than happy and you could have a fantastic lifestyle on $1,000 or less....
Again I'm not a healthcare or travel insurance expert so I don't talk too much about it I can only go with what I pay....
That being said I personally would not live in Cambodia

Hello Doc. I always enjoyed your videos and now you're doing one in Cambodia right before I arrived. What a coincidence. I will be traveling to Phnom Penh next week from Los Angeles. I'm very excited to do my own comparison, I'm a real foodie. I plan to get to Siam Reap sometime in late June or early July. I hope we can meet up for tacos and beer. Coming from California, I know what good tacos taste like.
For those who don't know, there are a significant number of American Cambodians that were deported from the US. The biggest Khmer population outside Cambodia is in Long Beach, CA. Cambodia town is mixed with the Mexicans and Blacks communities. These American Khmer were raised on good tacos.
Majority of Cambodia's population are called Khmers, I understand that they prefer to be called Khmer but they take no offense to the term Cambodians.
I hope to meet up with you on my latest adventure. I've been to Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. I am working on getting to all the countries of ASEAN (Association of South East Nations).

Okay,so it wins hands down on all these metrics which isn't hugely surprising, given that Cambodia is a much 'poorer' country...but the question that we need answering: Does it provide a gainful lifestyle? So as it offers more than enough incentive to want to live there? Opinions please.

Yeah all fine and good until you decide to rent a place longer term, and your power bill is ridiculous using aircon if you go over 50 KWH/month, I believe Cambodia has one of the most expensive rate per KWH in the world. Short term stays, yeah, Id say Cambodia would be cheaper than the most expensive place in Thailand in Phuket IF your renting a room that pays for your power, or not for a few days, but anything over a month...I dont think so for the rest of Thailand. Places like Hua Hin, Cha-am, Chiang Mai, Jomtien, etc would likely still be farrrr cheaper if I were to guess, I guess we will have to await your longer term stay vids.
I have heard from some of the locals that yes you have to be careful with the aircon so when you were renting a place try to find one that has your power included and I was able to find several examples with air conditioning and power included in the rents....
I will say this much I got absolutely raped down in Phuket one time the only time I rented and didn't have power included the power was more expensive than my room...
Lol
Never again...

My friends in Phom Penh, said it is $.25/kwh. They said always get a North facing room, because of the sun. Only use A/C in your bedroom at night. Use fans during the day. A fan uses 1/100 the electricity of A/C. Buy a propane frying pan burner, instead of electric one. Make sure you have access to your electric meter. Electricity will be no more than $47/month.
Great video mark
Thanks Ian...

hello Dr. Mark, love your shows, except for the food conversations as you seem to go for the cheap choices of fast local food, would you consider doing some healthy and heart friendly choices, thinking beef?/chicken/fish or goat, paying extra is to be expected but something roasted on a bbq sans sugar, no smoothies. thanks again, love your program
I can
But actually I get my smoothies with no sugar..
I get enough from the coke
I'll try to do some better food videos in Vietnam
Ok???

If you're going to Cambodia you definitely want to take US dollars....
