  • This is all just personal opinion and not based on any actual makeup training but what do you think? I found what's best for me personally, both as someone with cool, muted olive skin, and just me as someone with my own unique individual coloring of both undertones and overtones. Hope this helps you to figure out what works best for YOU!!

Completely agree with you. I think "neutral" is a marketing trick as it makes people think it will work on them. As a cool olive, most neutral palettes don't work for me. Please keep making videos about makeup. There are few RUclipsrs who understand cool olive.

I find a lot of muted purples and pinks look the most neutral on my eyes as well. I have one cool bronzer that I love and am in a slight panic that I’m nearly out of because it’s so hard to find but I use that when I truly want the “my natural eyelids but better” look. It looks frighteningly bold in the pan but it barely registers on my lids. I use a lot of deep grey blues and blacks as well and it just looks “normal” on me, not bold at all. I stand in front of makeup and despair most of the time because the vast majority of colours just do not work on me at all. *sigh*. The struggle is real 😂

Neutral for you will be muted pinks, mauve, cream/ivory, khaki, taupe, chocolate browns. Bright silver is pretty but not neutral on you especially with a blue base. This is not only based on your olive undertone but your iris. Korean and Japanese neutrals are a great idea. Brown is a neutral, but depends on the undertone. If you want to amp up the drama, you can mix a medium/dark brown with a neutral pink shadow. Neutral doesn’t just mean it “blends” into the skin; it means that it naturally complements and flatters your coloring. Neutral also doesn’t mean light; it can be dark and dramatic, too. Neutral is opposite to vivid, contrasting, muted/ashy, or “other.” I enjoyed your video and will be doing more pink shadow this week. 😊

I’m kinda shook. I’ve been struggling so hard to figure out my skin tone and colours. Something has been so off and I have not been able to figure it out. It never ever in a gagillion years occurred to me that I might be olive toned. I really thought olive skin tones were obvious, were that warm sun kissed sort of tone. I had NO IDEA there was such a thing as a light, cool, olive tone. I have had different analysis done over the years and no one seems to have any consensus on what I am. So I thought maybe I am just neutral. But I’m clearly not. I look pale but I do not have that bluish white cast to my skin. Anyhow, you don’t need my whole saga 😂 This video popped up during yet another search on the topic and my jaw kinda dropped. Pretty much everything you were pointing out about the difft palettes … I was nodding my head like, “mmmhmmm !!!” . Thank you so much 😊

I'm so glad it helped you!! Olive undertones can be super confusing because a lot people just use it as a euphemism for medium depth instead of referring properly to the actual undertones. I can recommend Alexandra Anele as a makeup RUclips who has a light olive undertone who's been helpful for me. She's on the warm side of olive, but i've still gotten some great recommendations from her

Forgot to mention, those celebrities you mentioned are wearing thoes colors because of the color anaylis they are. They are a True Winter. So, that's why they are wearing those tones. Now, I am a Bright Winter. I can wear bright colors. The neutrals I can wear are taupes, soft pinks, mauves, greys. Now, black smokey eye does not look good on me but because lf my eye shape. Makes my eyes look smaller. So, it all varies in each person. My skin is light/olive-cool.

I am so so so glad I found your video. I struggle for the longest time with my eyeshadow colors. Nothing seems to work. I have light-medium olive skin tone. I always knew that I have olive skintone because I am mediterranean and everybody in my family have that grayisch/ greenish skin that bronze very easy in the sun. There are a lot of videos about foundations but nothing about the right nude eyeshadow colors for olives. Black is to harsh, browns to warm and the muted cool nudes make my dark circles pop up. I just couldn't figure it out. Till now. So thank you for this video.

I went down the color analysis rabbit hole and came across your color analysis you had done by Merriam style. I'm a medium olive skin tone so I understand this struggle very well!! When that first naked palette came out, the colors did not work on me (and all that followed)! I love the shade of blue eyeshadow you wore in your other video, it's my favorite! And the eyeshadow in this video is beautiful!! I can see how much more flattering it is. I've never used grays, because I have dark circles and worry about looking gray (I'm of Indian background), and gray and mauve clothes don't look good. But, today I tried these cool tones with a Maybelline palette that was gifted to me, and I'm shocked! A bit of gray taupe and mauve is actually most neutral on my eyes! I'm 35, I can't believe I haven't tried this before.

    • @LexiLadonna
      @LexiLadonna  Год назад +1

I'm so glad it works for you too! I'm not as full of recommendations for other categories, unfortunately. I do have some makeup declutter videos coming out where I give mini reviews on a bunch of different products I have, but I don't have a big youtuber collection, just a smaller number of products and for most other categories I haven't branched out and tried as many things as I have with eyeshadow.
Not sure what your skin depth is but I have found korean foundations to be more likely to have olive or desaturated colors, only problem is each brand will only sell a couple shades. Currently I use the Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream in the lighter shade, 21. But I have to lighten it further with the Rose Inc concealer in the lightest shade, which is very desaturated and neutral, works well as a mix-in. Rose inc and Kosas in general seem to have an excellent range and other olives I've talked to have found decent matches there. When my Missha stuff is ready to be repalced, I'll probably try first with Kosas, but I'd be surprised if it didn't require using mix-in and green or blue color correctors. I'm resigned to it
For blush I tend to like dusty pink shades when I want a natural look but I have to be super picky. Even a slightly warm pink will look peach or orange on me. My current favorite for natural looks are the Pat McGrath Divine Rose blush in Divine Rose or the Mac Glow Play Blush in Rosy Does It. Both have a great undertone for me but are a bit too saturated so I have to be very careful when using them to not go overboard. My best ever blush was the mini size of Tarte Amazonian clay blush in the shade paaarty, but the full size is a slightly different color and they stopped making the mini. In general though I think you could probably find a great match in that line, they have a ton of different colors in that same family that are only off by slight degrees to get you a perfect shade.
      Hope that info helped!

Love your videos & presentation style! & Thank You for making videos about cool light olive skin tones! Yay! I am a cool light medium olive skin tone & have definitely had quite a time as well! I like Merriam Style & her videos on this topic. I have also watched videos from a color analyst named Lanie Rode who also seems to understand pale/light cool olive skin tones & she offers info on both makeup & clothing with in depth insights too. Also, if you ever get the older Color Me Beautiful & Looking Your Best With Color Me Beautiful books by Carole Jackson, you can actually hold up the pages with color swatches next to your face to see what looks best on you if you don't have fabric swatches to use to compare. You can also use these swatches as makeup color suggestions as well. I happen to be a Summer with medium ash brown hair, & (grey tones, as I am 65+). I have also found that deep rosy corals look great on my skin tone too. & Rosy tones for lipstick & blush shades, are beautiful! Rose is a combo of peach & pink, after all. Corals that lean rosy are gorgeous, imho, & provide youthful & attractive beautiful looks & soften my dark circles, etc! Also, as examples, I think ColourPop:Stone Cold Fox, Rock Candy & Smoke'N'Roses & Morphe: Everyday Chic, Natural Flirt & Va Va Bloom Eyeshadow Palettes would look flattering on you, & jewelry with rose golds vs yellow golds. & I do not work for any of these companies or color analysts, either. Also, Winters, are Cool, Clear & High Contrast. Summers are Cool, Muted & Low To Medium Contrast. I still think that Color Me Beautiful made things easier to understand overall, from a 4 season standpoint to the more updated 16 season updates. Just my humble opinion. Best Wishes!

And not too long ago I stopped trying to do a fancy “muted/neutral” eye with browns bc it just looked off for some reason and decided that the colors that looked best on me were the simple cool rose pinks.

  • @PamelaRubel

Im a cool-neutral olive, but not muted, but I have reached a similar conclusion to what you are showing here! Pinks and mauves are my neutrals, I can get away with more intense or vibrant colors, but definitely, the pinks and mauves are the most natural on my green skin! I do avoid peachy pinks, but mauve and purple pinks are my jam. I have found korean brands to have nice pinks! My favorite korean brand is Romand, I feel like they have truly nailed cool tones. And I do like Peripera as well!
Edited to add: outside of "neutral" pinks in makeup, I adore wearing cobalt blue, indigo, deep purple, blue teal, light blue, lilac, lavender, and champagne colors and straight up pink, like bright pink. I Oh and cool toned red lipsticks have been my jam for the past few months and Im sad I didnt discover them sooner. I dont like greens usually, BUT a bright chartreuse shimmer can look fantastic. Ironically, I used to think I had warm skin because everyone classified olives as warm back in the day TT

I am a warm pale olive and I love the ND Mini Nude (for a "your eyes but better" looks) and ND Mini Glam (for more olive/khaki green looks - it is actually slightly cool but it still works good for me). I had to give away the Mini Biba, because it was pulling beetroot-y on me and made me look sick. Now you also made me want the Mini Retro :D
I can make quite neutral looks with a palette like ABH Rose Metals - most of these colours will scream "drama! glam!" on other people. On me it just looks pretty.

Yeah, I guess you can say we are all some version of orange. I usually say we are different shades brown (which is just low-intensity orange). Neutral is a color that is in the middle between two extremes.
You are going about testing neutral eyeshadow in the right way. We all just have to see how the shadow colors interact with our personal coloring.
Five or so years ago when every brown palette was warm I had a hard time wearing any of it because it just appeared to sit on my face instead of blending in.

I'm happy to see a video dedicated to cool muted olive! I was so confused with why neutral beige colors look orange toned, and why some pinks look too warm and bright. I learned a lot from this video that since I am cool, muted and olive, I need to get muted pink shades that are not peachy pinks but instead light mauve colors. Thank you very much! May I ask if you have any suggested youtube makeup channels for cool muted olives?

Alexandra Anele and Hannah Louise Poston are both fair olives (not sure how fair you are) so I get a lot of recommendations from them on base products. Hannah in particular is muted so has good blush recommendations. But Hannah is neutral to warm and like INCREDIBLY fair and Alexandra is goldenish olive, so what works for them isn't always a perfect fit. That's the best I've got, sorry!

I agree with mauve! but a true mauve. These days I've noticed a lot of brands selling "mauve " mauve items that are quite peachy and warm, and they alter their product photos to make them appear way cooler than they are in real life. My theory is that they are just repackaging all their warmer rosewood shades as mauve to try to get in on the trend without having to actually formulate new items

I really like the Wet n Wild Icon 10 pan palettes for drug store palettes. They're a good size and not a terrible formula for a soft every day look. They're not great for really bold pigmented looks but that's why I like them as a everyday palette.
If you're a pretty cool olive like me the V. I. Purple colorway might work or maaaybe Comfort Zone but not all the colors; Nude Awakening if you're more neutral olive (it has some of that pinkier tone I think olives need in our "neutrals" but it's not too warm or cool), and for warmer olive maybe Rose In The Air, but I confess I'm not as good at picking out what would work for warm olives.
Hope that helps! Every person's skintone is slightly different so I'd recommend finding a place you can look at the colors in person and maybe even swatch! I think Ulta carries them

I liked the orangey browns the most on you. Smokey tones are hard to blend no matter who you apply them on, you need a transition color between the smokey color and the browbone color, something close to your skintone, 1-2 shades darker. Can be bronzer, nude tones, apricot, light orange, light taupes etc.. depends on the color you are trying to transition. EDIT: the palette you loved has great transition shades for you. And the rosey tones bring out the green in your eyes. I have warm brown eyes so i prefer golds, honey, reddish amber/brown colors.

you are the first person i've found on RUclips in about 6-7 years of watching beauty content who actually has similar colouring as me. to be honest i didn't think i'd ever find someone with similar colouring as me. i have a few "fair cool" and "fair olive" folks i follow but after trying many of their recommendations and finding their cool tones coming up orange/peach on me, i'd pretty much given up.
i've also given up on palettes. i've come to the conclusion that the beauty industry, including reviewers and influencers, don't actually understand what "cool" means. i feel like "cool" has become the "new" (as if cool didn't always exist) buzzword, a trend in makeup spaces that just means "not orange or yellow." anything green, blue, or violet gets thrown in, without the understanding that any and all of those can be warm, and 99.9% of the time they are warm because there seems to be a deep fear of blue- and grey-based makeup. i snorted with laughter when i saw Sigma's "cool neutrals" palette. i don't understand what's going on. additionally, even when there are palettes that have colours i can wear, they make up less than half of the palette, and i can't justify buying an entire palette unless i can wear all of the colours, but that's just me personally.
these are the colours i can wear on my face: cheek colour has to be a light, muted, blue-based mauve. this is literally the only blush colour i can wear that does not make me look like rust. on my eyes, light- to light-medium blue- based violets, violet-based pastel blues, and blue-based pastel greens (think more sage or mint, not teal), and greys based on any of these. the only browns i can wear have so much grey and violet in them, they do not swatch brown on most folks. my lips, which appear light at first glance, actually have a deep purple undercurrent, and the only colours that look right on me are muted blue-based plums and mauves, which are extremely hard to find. This is the only area of my face where i actually need a medium-to-dark colour to balance out the undertone of my lips. light lip colours wash me out though i do like a light lip colour with a dark liner.
the only palette i've found that is both cool and muted enough for me is rom&nd's Better Than palette in Odd Breeze Garden. strangely, it's a predominantly pink palette, but every single shade in that palette is dusty - dusty as in muted and grey, not as in brown. most of the colours are fairly light which is an added bonus for me. apart from that i've gone the eyeshadow single journey from companies like Sydney Grace, Devinah, and Lethal Cosmetics. Sydney Grace colours that I have and that suit me are Concrete Road, Regal, Perfect Storm, Cali, Snow Queen, and Parallax Light. Devinah colours that suit me are Esme, London Fog (an absolutely gorgeous pastel grey-green), Ethereal, Frisson and Gaia. Lethal Cosmetics makes a lovely pastel periwinkle called Altitude that i'm obsessed with. For the most part i consider my collection complete, but i'm still on the lookout for one more green and i think i may have found it in Emme Cosmetics, in the shade Aqua, though of course i won't know until i try. The absolute best icy blue-leaning pastel mint comes from Watier, the Canadian brand, in the form of their Eye Shine eye pencil in the shade Aqua (they're available on Sephora, at least in Canada). I sadly took the advice of many a beauty influencer after watching the swatches of literally dozens of people on many different skin tones and bought the Colourpop Stone Cold Fox palette. I was able to wear and therefore salvage three of those 30 shades, but i didn't record the names so i'm not sure what they are - it was the medium muted blue-based grey matte, the light grey-based taupe matte, and the white matte with white sparkles suspended in it.

I think we do have similar coloruring! I'd given up long ago on ever buying any palette that had neutrals because I knew they would always be too warm. Even "cool" palettes like Natasha Denona Retro palette is mostly warm on me and I can only wear a couple shades. Unfortunately I have not given up on palettes in general because I love them! I love to be inspired by a color story. The ones I've found that work for me are the Natasha Denona Retro Glam palette, which is greyish greens and the one neutral shade in there has a bit of a green tinge to it, and the Colourpop Twilight palette. People always think I'm crazy when I say blue eyeshadow is my favorite but on me (and you) it doesn't lok garish or anything. Even a brighter blue will much more at home on my face that it would on a lot of other people's. But it has to have an iciness to it, just like you were saying for you. I'm glad 90s icy blues are starting to trend because I've finally been able to find some after like two decades of looking and not being able to find blues that didn't verge on aquamarine but instead had the icy look, even if they were bright.
I also am the same with blushes and lipsticks. Unless I'm going for a bright red, lipstick is impossible. I've found like one or two shades ever that work as a more neutral lip. It takes a lot of the fun out of makeup when all the blushes you buy, no matter the brand, all look identical haha. But yeah, just like you there's only one color of blush that looks good on me and everything else just looks like I rubbed rust on my face so I just stick to that same shade of muted dusty cool pink. I hesitate to even call it mauve because these days apparently everything, even warm rosewood colors, are being called Mauve by brands

    • @bristremel1554
      @bristremel1554 21 час назад

@@LexiLadonna oh my goodness, yes! i can't believe what gets called 'mauve.' it makes it so confusing! 'dusty mauve' in most lines tends to be what you're describing - more of a warm rosewood colour, or even just plain rose. most of them are just a warm, vaguely pinkish colour - to make them more "wearable." to me, as soon as I see the word "wearable," i know they mean they've created something with a warm brown/yellow/orange/red/pink base to it, and therefore it is unwearable for me. same with "universally flattering" - they've warmed it up, and in some cases taken out any white base (and/or added a gold one), to make it more "wearable." also - i don't know if you've personally noticed this, but it seems to me that in palettes marketed as cool, the shimmers are always the warmest. i first noticed this in Colourpop's Stone Cold Fox palette - every single one of the shimmers was warm (sometimes with a warm base, but always with golden reflect) except for the blue-grey silver shimmer which was too bright for me to wear. when i started paying attention to that i noticed it in all of the palettes people swatch online - the shimmers tend to be on the warmer side.
i'm so, so curious about the Natasha Denona Retro Glam palette. i absolutely adore that colour story and it looks like the greens might actually suit me, even if the rosey tones probably won't. it's such a massive investment though and i don't know anyone in my life who's into makeup and has it so i can check it out in person. pastel greens, blues, and violets brighten my face so much. honestly i'd be tempted to try out a ND palette despite the price just for the simple fact that the pans are removable - so if a portion of the palette doesn't work for me i can rehome the ones that do work into my singles palette. i wish more brands did that.
the palette colab between Amy Loves Makeup and Adept also looks promising, in terms of truly cool-toned palettes. i watched her swatch it when she revealed it on her channel and i was impressed how much she committed to cooler tones. i like the range of colours as well. i might try that out at some point. i do believe those pans are removable from the palette as well. :)

I feel like with that one, I notice your beauty first because it's more harmonious with you, vs. The bright silver and black eyeshadow where I notice the eyeshadow before I notice you. However, the last two palletes were my favorite on you! :) I think personal style may be what draws you more to the bright silver over the grungy colors, because it's more vibrant, like your style, so it's still great for self-expression ^_^

I'm also cool, muted & olive.
So would you say that the cool palettes that are lilac are okay? Or they lean too cool for the olive?(e.g. romand better than eyes dry lavender) And if something red turns less red would a muted red palette (e.g. romand better than eyes dry rose) be more in harmony with the skin?
I'm very interested in the cool muted lilac kbeauty palettes but it feels very scary to go to that territory with my olive undertones..

Well everyone is slightly different, but if your skintone is similar to mine I think the dry rose would look pretty natural and nice! I also love the look of the dry lavender palette, but it's not going to look like a neutral palette./ It would probably look a lot more neutral on someone who is cool but not olive. I personally love blue-leaning pastels so I think it could still look nice, but I feel I look best in those types of colors when I have a full face of makeup on.
For me my daytime makeup usually doesn't include foundation or very much concealer and I go for a natural eye, that's why finding something to match my skintone really well was important. But when I go out in the evening and wear foundation I find that my complexion looks a lot brighter and less muted and slightly less olive. Mostly because it's hard to actually get an olive undertone foundation! But that means the blues and lavenders look nicer against that than my bare skin. As cool colors they don't look bad on bare skin, per se, they just more separate from me than when I have foundation on.
Anyway, that's just my experience. Hope that helps!

@@LexiLadonna yeah that helps a lot! Thanks for the answer! I actually later on realised that in your colourpop mystery box video you had a very cool lilac or purple color on and even though it wasn't a statement like the cool bright blue was, it was more of a statement than the pink muted look in this video.
Somehow without realising that it's my best neutrals palette I've been using a pinkish muted palette from clio(simply pink) for years now. I've been trying to search for some other colors that would be subtle but something different for a change but I guess the pink muted rose colors are here to stay 😅
Thanks for this precious video. I really think I understand my skin a bit better now 🐸

Lilac may work depending on your eye and hair color. Lilac is a pastel purple. Purple can be red violet or blue violet. Anytime these colors are used, it’s important to conceal under eye discoloration to avoid a “black eye” look.
