I want that laser! 🤩 I use a toothpick and gently work the paint into the lines. It's a little less messy than the brush, not that it matters. The blanks look great!

I am new subscriber and so happy to find your videos! I am totally new to wood turning. The one thing I have turned is pens and grew bored, because of less wood turning and more sanding, I would love to be able to do what I have learned while personalizing them with engraving. Can you steer me in the right direction for a laser engraver that can do this but also room to grow into as I gain experience for vases bowls and such. Yeah I am looking for the most bang for my buck. Thank you for your time.

Chad; a Backer stick for the sand paper may help to remove the excess paint. As a final finish I do thin CA followed by 0000 steel wool. This combines the durability of CA and gives a nice wood sheen and feel to the pen.

Another cool way to do a fill is to turn the blank not quite to finished depth then deep laser a simple image then fill that image with tinted resin or 5 minute epoxy. Then remount and turn down to finished size which will take out the excess resin. I do Koa Wood pens with engraved turtles this way. They are very cool...

Chad, if you mask your pen blank before you engrave it, it will make it much cleaner painting. After you are finished painting you just peel off the mask.

Just getting caught up on my RUclips watching this week and noticed your Video Chad. Nice work on the pens and the engraving. I really like the color fill work. Amazing how something so simple can look so good! I really need to get a rotary for my laser. With the one that you have are you cutting any of the inlay type wood pen blanks? I was planning on making some of these once I got a rotary but feel I might need the more expensive rotary that has a chuck and live center. Was just curious. Thanks.

Absolutely love your work. What laser printer do you recommend for that type of printing? Looking for one that can rotate pens automatically for me and avoid speeding or slowing the project and having an ugly product.

Check out Epilog Laser, though these are on the higher end. Cheap "china" laser might be okay if you don't mind fixing problems on the machine as they crop up over time. Just make sure whatever you get offers what is called a rotary attachment, that's the part that will spin the pen as it lasers. Then you just need some software (some come with their own, with Epilog the popular choice is Corel Draw).
