The riff we hear at the beginning of the video is different to what Phil demonstrates. The final two notes are a hammer-on on the D string: open D to E.

I was on RUclips and this little gem came out of the blue. There should be more of Phil talking about his guitar work.

Guessing Phil got some pretty fat checks thanks to the Jay z/Kayne tune. Good for him. Legendary guitarist.

I don't think having a riff sampled gets you paid a cent. Not sure if laws have been changed to give a writer, what, a percentage based on how long the sampling is? Hehe.

The author of the song that was sampled/used to create another song gets paid. You cannot use a composition published by another artist without permission. They used the 'k scope' track without permission. Manzanera is currently suing for unpaid royalties. There is no 'magic number' that allows use of 2 or 3 seconds of a copywritten piece of music. It's the music 'business'. Nothing is free.

Phil wrote "I then called Universal, who handled my publishing, and told them all about the phone call. “Oh yes we know all about that,” came the matter-of-fact response, “we’ve been speaking to them about it for weeks.” “Without bothering to mention it to me?” Ignoring my apparent naivety, he once again confirmed that they didn’t need my permission. “But I think you’ll be happy with the outcome,” he said, and went on to tell me that they had negotiated a one-third share of the publishing revenue. “And as a matter of fact, you’ll probably earn more from this than either Jay-Z or Kanye West.”
      ...
"Who knew that I would earn more money from a short guitar riff that I wrote one evening on a sofa in front of the telly in 1978 than I ever earned in the entire 50 years as a member of Roxy Music? Thank you, Kanye West, thank you Jay Z, thank you Virgin and Universal, and thank you to the capricious mistress that is rock’n’roll."

The hardest part of playing that riff is not going bonkers by the end of the song. Play it once - oooh, nice riff; play it a few times - hey, powerful oldtime blues feels good; play it for the entire song - arrrghh, nooooo ! I'm in repetitive riff Hell, my fingers are no longer my own !

I admire as he use play guitar, above all as he did in Roxy group, of which i saw some concerts by Bryam Ferry.. I get also some rarity (i believe) in vinil, played by him.. (When i say a ambum with his collaboration, as guitarrist, i use buy it) Now i may say to be a composer (amatorial), but i created the best melodie in music, including also some really nice intro for guitar, as was usual in beat era (for exemple, in my "La pioggia su di me", in guitar version), of which i come from as sensibility (i have also written a piece "Tonight", here uploaded (Tonight - Sergio Paliotti), so fit for sentimental sensibility of Bryam Ferry (also my "last moment - Sergio Paliotti", may be considered the best sad melodic music of any time)..
However i'm happy that he release new job as musician, of which i'll take in count careless.. Bye

I think the reason he said that is that on the song "no church in the wild" the riff is slowed down so it's in a lower key than the original riff, which is in the key of A. (A little late I know but I couldn't help myself lol)

I love Phil''s playing. I don't think he ever found the right vehicle for his work. He should do theme songs and soundtracks for ITV dramas. This particular lick would sound great leading into a hospital or mystery drama. Everybody else is playing scales or melodies. Also, advertisers could save a lot of money using his stuff for Car Adverts and such instead of paying royalties for 40 year old rock tunes. Check out the guitar work on TV Comedy "Last Man Standing". It is phenomenal.

I read somewhere where he said he made more in royalties from their cover than he'd made in the previous few decades combined!
