  • ✨This video is all about following our dreams even if we feel it's too late (it's not!) And, my personal story of starting art in my 40s & starting over in my 50s, entwined within some drawing and watercolour painting too! You are not behind in life!

Finding purpose at any age and reinventing ourselves is scary at any age. But, starting over later in life, after 40, 50, 60, 70 and beyond is entirely possible. Living life without regret! Many of us fail to start anything new because we feel it’s too late to start over. Do we feel it’s too late to start and that we are too old now to even bother! I believe it’s never too late to create your best life and start living it. I achieved success being an artist in my 50s after starting over in my 40s. Whether it’s starting a new hobby, learning how to draw, paint, revisiting an old passion or creating material success, it’s absolutely doable. It’s also very beneficial for our health; physical, mental, spiritual and psychological. Growing older is a gift and can open up time for us to do the things we have always wanted to do, so I say, go for it! Now’s the time! I’m also sharing my own personal story in this video from being a single mum, college and art school later in life and completely restarting my life after 40. Now in my 50s I have created the life I always dreamed of living! It’s by no means perfect and still bumpy at times, but it happened only after I took some risks and took a few leaps of faith! Living life now on my own terms makes me feel truly blessed and I want to inspire and cheer you on to do the same. (Even in the smallest of ways!)

When my mum retired she surprised us all by saying she wanted to return to being an artist. She had never been an artist our whole lives and we asked her "wait, when were you an artist?" And she said, "when I was a little girl". She is now an accomplished and prolific artist and just turned 80.

My grandmother went back and finished her diploma in her 60’s and marched along side my older brother when he graduated with his regular class. When asked why she actually went back and did so after all those years, she said, “Because you’re never too old to do what you want to do! Don’t you ever let anyone tell you, you can’t do something!!” It was a huge accomplishment for her and she was so proud since she had to leave school in her younger years and spent her whole life raising babies and then just trying to keep afloat since then. Something tells me it was far deeper than that that stopped her from going back until she learned to actually take her own advice and follow it. After she graduated, she got cancer spent the next few years struggling with that and then passed away.
I get a lot of my creative talent streak from her and not a day has gone by that I don’t think of her since she passed nearly 15 yrs ago now, but even more so when I’m painting since she gave me so much helpful advice along the way to learn from.
I hope that I can take her advice in life and just not ever wait until I’m that old to do something I love/want to do especially since watching her fight in the end taught me that you just don’t always have “some day” to do what you want to.

And at 60, I taught myself to paint and then taught others, have a studio even now. I'm 75 and have always followed my bliss and intuition. We are only limited by our thoughts. I learned to play drums starting at 39 (I got zero support for the desire as a girl growing up in the 80s & 90s) and went on to be in three indie rock bands, played lots of gigs, recorded albums, etc! Yes it was challenging, but also fun, life-changing, and totally worth it -- plus I always knew I could do it/would be good at it, I'd just never had the chance.

There's a great old pop/rock song that you might know from 1974 called Na Na Na by Cozy Powell. I was only 11 or 12 when it was released as a single, but I LOVED dancing to it at church hall discos!

I'm 64 and retired. My goal isn't to make a living being an artist but I have always had that internal need to create. I am determined to work at my art every day. I have multiple art journals that I do something in every day if I can. I don't pressure myself but I do track in my planner what I do creatively. Some days its collage, some days sketching, some days just prepping pages with gesso or paint. I also enjoy fussy cutting images for my art journal collage as well as slow stitching. We each have our own art inside of us and it doesn't matter if we ever show anyone or sell anything. We are successfully getting our art out and that is what nurtures our soal. Just create❤

I am turning 65 in a matter of months. With my retirement also on the horizon in June as an RN in healthcare and revenue resolution…my focus turns to “remaking myself”. I have fantasized about being an artist. Everything from Art journaling, acrylics, pastels, pen and ink, markers; I’m just a Color Fiend! I believe our only limits to who we are or what we are capable of achieving lies within! If we think we can’t…well then, we won’t. But, if we think we can…We Will! Take a chance is my motto…I Think I Will! Your video was timely and fresh! Love all your videos and your honesty.

My body just could not take all the abuse. it was the floor work that was too much for me. I have tons of tools for art and my own room to make a mess, but yet I procrastinate horribly. Sooooo i need a swift kick to get moving!!

I’m 60 years old and so much of my life has been about, “Someday, I’m going to….” Then, one day a few weeks ago, I heard a woman on an exercise video say something to the effect of, “Today is the day you will never be this young again!” It hit me so profoundly! Every day that goes by is gone FOREVER! If you want to do something, try something, just do it, try it!! That beautiful china set that was passed down for generations just packed away in a box, or just shown in a china cabinet, is yours to use and enjoy!! What are you waiting for?? You want to pick up a paint brush and try painting, just do it! Paint carefree, like you are using chalk on the sidewalk! Without any expectations, it can be so liberating!! Enjoy life!! Today!! We don’t know what day God has designed to bring us home!

I just wanted to commiserate with you. I too have had ME/CFS for more years than I care to remember. Have you heard of the Mucinex Protocol. Quite a few people have had a little relief from taking Mucinex. The active ingredient in it is Guaifenisin and that seems to be what does the trick. It has helped me to get a few chores done and also with lifting the brain fog. The effects are only temporary although it is an OTC which is convenient. One other drug that has helped me is (prescription) nortriptyline. I balked at it at first due to a bad experience with anti-depressants in the past but I started on 10mg a day and have slowly gone to 20mg to reduce body pain. I don't know if these would help you but I know how ME/CFS devastates your life and even a 5-15% improvement can feel like a huge difference. Anyway, heartfelt sympathy for you and wishing you all the best🙂

When I say what I'm doing, so many people ask me 'but who exactly is doing the work?' and are totally shocked when I say that I am 😊. I'm having a difficult time at work owing to a tryrant of a boss, but am gradually accepting that after 22 years with the same employer it is time to move on, and this can be a positive thing. I studied art for my BFA in my teens & 20’s and my MFA in my 40’s. Now I make art some days at night to relax and because I pivoted to a career in public health, but still carry art in my soul.
I always say I’m going to retire and be an old lady who paints and scuba dives into my 80’s. But if I do it right I may not have to wait that long.

Hi Wendy! Your discussionn in this video really hit home with me. I had a similar experience---married in my earlier 20s, had a child, became divorced and received no child support. Eventually made my way through college (BFA) and was hired right out of college as an illustrator and graphic designer (then art director) until the recession hit. We all lost our jobs as the company eventually closed. I had some very lean years, trying to figure out what to do next. I've been working a steady job (unrelated to art) for almost 10 years. It pays the bills, but is not in the least a creative job. I finally picked up my paints and brushes recently, but it IS a learning curve, and feel extremely frustrated sometimes (I am now mid-60s)---but I keep plugging away when I feel the urge to learn and be creative again. I do love your videos, your honesty, and your perseverence and encouragement. Thank you for giving me a push to continue on with my love of making art.

At near 60, I learned to play guitar, harmonica and to sing, at 62, I'm the front man of a Neil Young Tribute band.
It's never, ever too late, unless we want it to be too late.
In my wildest dreams, I never thought my life path would wind up as a rocker singer, guitar player..I've had a tremendous amount of support to help make it happen..

I am one of those people who just happened to click on this video today when RUclips suggested it. I so needed to hear this, at 53 I went back to work when my husband lost his job. Before that I had written a series of books (my true passion) which were successful enough to keep me going for quite a long time, but I needed something more secure when we lost my husband's income. I'm working as a legal assistant now, and finding it hard to make time for my writing anymore. Your words have inspired me to get focussed again and stop using work as an excuse to not write. I only feel half alive when I'm not writing and the feeling I get from it is more than reason enough to do it.

How did you used to make time before? Did you write every day?
I know of one author who gets up early every morning and writes for 1-2 hours every day and makes sure to be finished by 9am.

Thank you so much for this Wendy. I’m 74 and started painting at the beginning of the pandemic. I started painting
with acrylics on rocks first and after a hundred or more rocks decided to try on canvas. I have mentioned before that I am a musician, singer, songwriter having started playing in my teens and writing in my 20’s. I still do music but have found so much peace in painting. I have learned so much in these 4 years and have so much more to learn. I may never sell my work, but that’s ok. You are such an inspiration and a wonderful teacher. Blessings and much love to you and James and again thank you for posting such wonderful videos.
