Thank you for doing this suggestion, it's always appreciated, Justin. I highly recommend, "Surrender" by them too, which is also off of the same album. I knew Corinne Drewery when she was dating a close friend of mine, this is while she was at St Martin's School of Art in London, before her success in 'Swing Out Sister'.
The video is really fun and shows the personalities, energy and chemistry between them all. Great vid for lovers of fashion industry too. This how I scratched my british acid jazz itch before it really hit big in early 90’s with Incognito, Brand New Heavies and the like. Basia too
My Big Sister had always teased me whenever the video clip was playing on the TV back then with claiming I had the hots for the singer, as well as for Susanna Hoffs whenever the 'Walk Like An Egyptian' clip came on 🙄 I did actually have a soft spot for The Bangles' guitarist, though! 😄

Can't believe this track was 38 years ago. 🙂
The 80's had some of the happiest music ever. This is right up there with "September" by Earth, Wind and Fire or "Walking on Sunshine," by Katrina and the Waves. (btw my name is pronounced like Charlie Chaplin. It's a French name originally, but not as French as you are making it.)
I hate that I like it. 😂 If you like this kinda fun 80's stuff, might I suggest you listen to some 'Scritti Politti'. Namely something from their brilliant 'Cupid & Psyche' album.
Good to see a push for Scritti Politti. Think I've recommended them a few times. Though I'd put forward 'Songs To Remeber'. Deffo in my top 5 debut LP's.
Absolutely love it it sounds amazing the drums are not the horrible gated sound and she has a beautiful unaffected feel. Perfect pop 30 years ago and still fresh today!
SWING OUT SISTER - ** Am I The Same Girl (Official Music Video) Remastered ** / ** La La Means I Love You ** VIDEO 🔥🔥 these two are just as AMAZING as BREAK OUT Highly recommend both ✌️👌📻 80's/90's Classics it has the original 1980's Sound and Groove 🎹 🎺 Break Out is one of my favorite of 1986 a super Classic!!
This was a blast from the past! Released around the same time my now wife and I started dating and this was a big favourite of hers, so it brings back some happy memories. Late eighties pop didn’t do much for me at all but I loved the bright Latin vibes this track gives out and its can-do message. The horns are fantastic. Never knew about the background before though. Every day’s a school day!
That song is one of my favorites. Not sure if I heard an extended version but I'll have to check it out. I would love a reaction from JP for that song.
I was about to suggest ‘you on my mind’ … such a feel good tune - although the lyrics seem to suggest something different! One of my all time favourites.
Funny... I just played this LP over the Christmas break for the first time in about 30 years. Also been a Japan/Sylvian fan since 1979, and bought this album back in the '80's. Good stuff, JP!
The Latin rhythm and female lead singer always conjurs up, for me, Gloria Estafan and the Miami Sound Machine. They even recently made a Broadway musical, too.
My favorite music reactor hits one of my favorite tracks---and did not disappoint. Justin (not that I think there's any risk), don't lose that genuine, enthusiastic, intelligent approach. And if you haven't, please check my comment on the Phoebe Snow "Never Letting Go" reaction...there are a couple of recommendations I'm sure you'll enjoy.
I actually really like this I don't find it bland- to me it's an 80s version of 1940s style jazz ballads. I liked it when it came out and I like it now. It beats much of the Stock Aitken and Waterman Hit Factory stuff that came out around the time.
Every brass band seems to play that brass line... I recall being in Disney World in 1991 or so and was surprised to hear the band playing it... great tune.
„That‘s fun“ - what you said is exactly what I felt in my teenage days. Corinne Drewery is a jewel. And there were so many great tunes after this debut. Swing Out Sister are active up to this day never loosing any of their quality. My favorite LP was „Kaleidospope World“ from 1989 melting Motown and Bacharach in the best possible way. Definitely deserves a Long Song Saturday listen. Masterpiece.
Happy seeing you return to Swing Out Sister so soon. Thanks! Loved your reaction! No surprise that this feel-good gem became a big world wide hit in the 80s. Next stop on this album should be the album's other single 'Fooled By A Smile'. But their second album 'Kaleidoscope World' has a more accomplished '60s influenced orchestral sound which I hope you'll react to. 'You On My Mind' from that album would be a great choice as would 'Where In The World' or 'Forever Blue'. Keep going.
... and they are still good. They can also sound different. A newer song that is reminiscent of Scott Walker songs from the late 60s (Scott 3 or Scott 4) is "Almost Persuaded".
Light, airy, chirpy, pop froth... That said, very catchy, and a great use of brass. Surprisingly, maybe, I quite like this one, though don't think I could name a single other tune they did.
Absolutely not my thing at the time, but I wasn't gonna deride it either, even then. Their popularity dropped off quite quickly after this came out, people think they were bigger than they actually were but when you dig, you find out that in their minds Swing Out Sister and Matt Bianco have actually merged into one. Maybe in a parallel universe those two did merge into some proto electro-swing supergroup that was way more than the gimmick Electro Swing became. 😉
Justin , Just to clarify: the inability of Yer ColdTech Search Engines to consider the Context of Me Mentioning this song may mean that I didn't necessarily recommend it. I heard it once and liked it , after that It Made Me Vomit . Mercy on Me, oh say that I'm Forgiven, as Paddy would sing. Please Play I Trawl The Megahertz as therapy. I need it.
Noooooo! On some of my duller days I try to accurately date the spiritual death of pop music. I usually blame Stock, Aitken and Waterman which would put it around 1985 but Swing Out Sister certainly were some of the co-conspirators in kicking the corpse. This was awful. Luckily, I got married in 1984 so I didn't have to frequent discos after that.
It's not one I've heard played too many times, and it's OK. Didn't have an impulse to turn it off; don't have any impulse to hit replay, either. That said, I was distracted by my finding the name of the band I keep struggling to remember (much as I've struggled to remember Shudder to Think before). It's *Whores* ! Or Wh*res, in a title label, I suppose. Finally we meet again! It's "doomer/sludge", I suppose. Metal with a touch of Sabbath in it, in other words. And they have the best song titles. For instance this one is called: *I Am Not a Goal Oriented Person* ruclips.net/video/DkhUqjdcsIY/видео.html Bass player puts his whole heart into it, and the drummer has a nice satanic T-shirt, too.
Every now and then a song manages to grate on every one of my nerves. This is one of those songs. Probably haven't heard it in 40 years...40 wonderful years. To be fair though, most songs of that time had an accompanying video. Maybe I just disliked the video enough to throw the song out with it.
It kinda came in the second wave of 80s pop. First wave was all the post punk, new romantic and synth pop. After that the music for yuppies appeared, Sade, Matt Bianco, Curiosity Killed the Cat. This fits somewhere between the two.

Omg that album was gold to me. Great synth pop album sort of blue eyed soul music, was well produced for its time.
Love Scritti! Green has such a beautiful voice. He comes from my hometown. Went to a different school though 😊
Love this song, Justin! And yes, it always brightens my mood when I hear it. Thanks for reacting to it!

The lead singer sounds like Gloria Estefan with a bad head cold.
Loved this when it came out, still sounds fresh, a very uplifting pop song. Exceptional in my opinion.
