    As a van driving technician in the electrical field I sure miss my service truck until it rains that’s the only time I have found where a van is better! I step in out of rain in a van but in a truck I stand their and get soaked as I get parts! But nothing is more valuable ( to me) than not listening to my parts bouncing around! We all know there’s always a part you can not find that makes a noise that will drive you flipping nuts. So I installed a better sound system.

    • @donhappel9566
      @donhappel9566 Год назад

      I put multiple layers of sound deadening on the bulkhead of my vans but you'll never actually get away from the noise. But man, I sure do miss the sheer space of my old van compared to a 6.5' bed with an ARE topper. Probably 1/4 the space of my old NV2500.

    I would recommend a lowest cost MIG that takes 5kg reels (not flux cored). It can do everything a stick or gas torch welder can do & most things better.
    I think they are all made in the same Chinese factory so brand doesn’t matter. Just buy lowest cost & assume it’s semi-disposable.

    I love your practical approach to everything you've been doing. As a retired engineer, practicality was always my mindset, and I enjoyed your high school memory callout as well, as I had heavy machine shop high school experience with all kinds of things that can take off a limb or digits, crush, or perforate body parts (engine lathes, millers, drill presses, and welding torches). Great stuff that teaches you respect for your limitations! Enjoy your truck, man!

  • @cmdrclassified
    @cmdrclassified Год назад +8

    Just remember, the next time you go to the doctor for the old "annual exam", tell him you need him to use two fingers! That way you get the second opinion right away!
    As for a small MIG welder, go for one of the smaller Lincoln MIGPAK welders. I run the MIGPAK 180 which is a 240v, but if all you are doing is sheet metal with it, maybe go for the MIGPAK 100, which is a 120V welder. Both will do flux core as well as gas. Also, maybe have a look to see of that Miller can accept a spool gun. I would stick to the name brand equipment though. You'll have more success with them, and less problems.
    The new truck looks awesome, and I'm sure you'll get it arranged to your liking soon enough.
    Have a great day, Sir! And God Bless! o7

    • @cmdrclassified
      @cmdrclassified Год назад +3

      @@FunkFPV Lincoln makes a "suitcase" welder, which is basically a MIG that is powered by an ARC welder. Might be something to look at as well. I am a Mechanic (35+ years), and when I was working out of my buddy's shop (welder/fabricator), he would often get me to help him out on big jobs. He had the suitcase MIG, and it was incredible. And the spool gun was good for aluminum welding. Obviously not as good as TIG with aluminum, but did the job.

    • @heatheverett
      @heatheverett Год назад +1

      @@cmdrclassifiedyeah I think they still make a couple different model suitcases. They're basically just a wire feeder that's powered by your welding machine. BUT!!! As with anything that has a Lincoln logo slapped on it, it's way overpriced!
      I've seen em used in the field to weld some pipe casing and the welders seemed happy with em. But again, the welders didn't have to pay for em...
      I wonder if these new Miller bobcats allow you to connect one of the wire feeders like you'd see on the old Delta series arc welders? That would be sweet and you can find them used pretty easy and cheap

    • @cmdrclassified
      @cmdrclassified Год назад

      @@heatheverett I am a Mechanic, and when I used to work out of my buddy's shop (he's a welder fabricator), he had a 10kW Miller on his service truck, and the Lincoln suitcase. It was a big one, and you could push a lot of amps through it. My guess is that it should work, as the suitcase just need the supply of power from the arc welder. o7

      @donhappel9566 Год назад

      Same here. I work in yacht service so that means I'm an electronics tech, plumber, rigger, electrician, mechanic, etc just depending on the day. Been working out of vans for the last few years as it's just so much more convenient. Last one was an NV2500. Lots of room inside (nearly 10' clear floor space so room for those 8' antennas or even a deflated 12' RIB if you wanted it bad enough!) but the 13 mpg was killing me as I'm paying for my own fuel. Would have loved to move to a Sprinter or Transit but still needed 8500 lbs towing on occasion and no van on the US market today can do that. Ended up moving down to a 1500 Chebby truck with the 3.0 duramax and 6.5' bed/extra-cab. Much nicer to drive than my vans and tows better as well plus it gets 30 mpg on the highway and at 30-35K/year that pays for itself even if diesel is 20-40 cents more. But man, it's NOWHERE NEAR as much space as a van!

A good one, not some cheap pos... Get an additional fire extinguisher that you have really quick easy access to on one of the outside compartments or cab of the truck.. Not a tiny one either... Lastly one of those patio furniture canopies/ umbrella to mount near the vise that’s on the rear of the truck.. You will absolutely appreciate that when it’s hot and the sun is cooking you to death as you’re sweating your ass off over the vice or making hydraulic hoses.. it’s a real nice thing to have.... A decent cooler is also a great thing to have... There ya go! 👍. 🇺🇸🇺🇸

    Atleast you got a Knapheide 🙌 Everything else will leak/rust/annoy you within a year or less... I'm pretty sure that's a factory guarantee for most service body manufacturers... Plus it's wrapped, but I have one with like 70% of the original paint left and it's still rust free from the factory e-coat galvanized paint or whatever magic they use... Bumpers, latches, lights, wiring, door gaskets... All the little things on Knapheide's seem just that much better than the others I've had... Especially Reading and Stahl! 😠

      I'm ashamed to have a name associated with Reading BTW... Even if was related and received royalties I'd still be pissed! 😆

    I just gave up my 22F350 open body for a 23 Transit 350 that’s 9’ high.. The F350 was my first service truck. I got it new.. I’ve always had vans. My last truck was a KUV on a E350 cutaway chassis…
    The F350 was an awesome truck and it drove great… Honestly though- aside from the 4X4- I absolutely hated working out of that thing!!! I will definitely miss the 4x4 option when the snow starts flying- but I am a van guy!! I can stand up in the back if/when I need to piss… SO MUCH MORE ROOM!! I love it!!
    As far as your wheel well hump- if you look, we’ve had guys cut that right out of there and weld a piece of flat stock right over it so it’s flat.. That hump is to accommodate certain trucks.. I know a F550, you can get away with deleting it…

    I wish you good luck you just now giving everybody the entire inventory on what to resell from your service vehicle. Mine was stolen 4 years ago. It was horrible!😢 good luck with the new truck🎉

    I worked out of a van for the majority of my career in the Materials handling, the company (hopefully the last one) I work for now uses trucks, I drive a 2022 Silverado 3500, I can’t ever go back to a van. My truck is an open back. Your set up is great!

    Good luck with the change. I've been working as a fork lift tech for four months now and I love it. Way better than the 16 years suffering in automotive on flatrate.
