Any game that inspires mortals to surrender 1000 hours of their comically brief lives is worthy indeed.
When i can tear myself away from Stardew Valley, yeah, daggerfall gets a lot of my attention lately.
It’s fun so it’s worth every second
I put more hours in Elden ring without completing it than any other game before and I've been gaming since the original Super Mario Bros.
Hundreds of hours have gone into the Elder Scrolls as well but I always felt like I at least beat the main story within 200 hours
mighty pile of shit that is
😢
As an adult Boomer, I have to disagree about the mouse and keyboard problems on the original systems at that time. Once you set it up more rationally, it was easy to play. All you had to do was remember to change the cursor lock back and forth when you found something that needed an exact point. My 4 kids and I spent thousands of hours playing. Still play it. Never stopped. Have been able to get it to run on every system I have owned. One bug was that after 4,000,000 gold it could crash. The neat thing was each of us played different. One daughter just like to wear the best looking clothes, and killing guards escaping using levitation. Yes, TES fans, real levitation in Daggerfall. She got the greatest quests I never got, and I played as much as the four of them combined. One liked to play vampire. One wanted just to do the main quest. One just wanted enchanted gear sets. If you get tired of choosing custom and tanking up, try vanilla thief. It will challenge you in a whole different way. The differences each person or character is real in Daggerfall. Tired of games where you have to tank up, or go the same route over and over? You do need to remember "Save Often!" Daggerfall is unforgiving about killing you when you screw up. Although you need teleport just to make it out of dungeons, get levitate and fly from trouble, except arrows.
How's that prune juice homie? Lol
@@CrappyGameReviews Have to ask those all those skeleton guards I kept poisoning. ;)
As a fellow seasoned (but not quite as old) gamer this is wholesome. Fond memories of tinkering around on my Atari st then Amiga 600 with some old dungeon crawlers like Knightmare and Eye of the beholder.
@@Iymarra I still play the original XCOM: UFO Defense. The game may seem repetitive. But, the new XCOM is both repetitive and more limited. I loved having multiple bases and getting bunches of great troops, having over 100 UFO kills, and fighting the huge UFO ships.
One thing I never understood with Daggerfall was how Bethesda never caught a glitch in their shopkeepers. Fact that you could buy a whole armor set off them, but they somehow can't afford to give you more than a fraction of the gold you JUST paid them.
"Once you have their money, you never give it back." --1st Ferengi Rule of Acquisition
So, its not a glitch. It's a feature. 😉
@@Mr._Anderpson Bonus respect points for the memorization with the Ferengi! Glad to meet a fellow Trekkie.
@@KitsuneYojimbo Pleased to meet ya. What are the odds someone who enjoys a game like Daggerfall might also enjoy Trek?
Probably higher odds than average. I'm not sure how other people do it, but I often have something playing in the background on a tv or laptop while playing a game like this.
@@Mr._Anderpson Oh yeah! It's funny, I started the series with Oblivion and while I wasn't a big fan of vanilla Daggerfall, I'm really digging the Unity version.
At least it wasn't like Oblivion where you can sell a million gold worth of items to a shopkeeper but they'll only pay up to 800 gold for one item.
Letters of credit were awesome tho.
Ah, Daggerfall. I learned to love the funeral cut scene.
I want to play Dnd with the guys who write the elder scrolls lore. I bet that table would be awesome
But the backstory and world lore changes every single session, not great
@@jonathanwells223 lmao that would be terrible. Because my D&D play sessions are so infrequent these days, I have to keep notes so I can remember what was going on. If we are in some kind of campaign where everything was constantly changing I don’t think I can handle that. My brain is too smooth.
It is a misconception that dungeons are randomly generated outside of story dungeons. The only random element of those dungeons is the location in which the quest objectives spawn. You can visit the Tombs of Copperfield or the Agyrn Prison 1000 times each, and they'll always have the same layout and tileset. Only Arena has randomly generated terrain and dungeons outside of cities and main quest areas.
They were randomly generated in 1996, they will always be the same now, but they were generated at one point.
They are not actively randomly generated, but they were randomly generated by the developers before being set in stone in the game.
@@CrappyGameReviews That's almost cooler
They always use the same seed en overy save and game, which causes the dubgeons to always be the same. If you change it then the dungeons would be different.
A game of the size of Daggerfall would have had problems being inside a disc of it wasn't for this.
I remember that opening video giving me goosebumps that first time. Being 12 years old when this came out was magical.
Enjoyed the video. Well summarized. I played doom with a track ball in the 90s :(

im sorry for your loss.
If it makes you feel any better, I play everything with a trackball now. Said goodbye to wrist pain, relearned to aim in less than a month and never looked back. Highly recommend the ergo series from Logitech

i caught that too lol
A video for W Magazine, I think, recently made the same mistake with Todd IN the video.
I do wish the Dibella worshippers were more convincing in Skyrim.
mmmmbooba
Yes, I realize there is a mistake in the title, I can fix it, but i'm not going to because it involves totally re-uploading the video which would make this one unwatchable. Maybe in a week or so i'll re-upload.
EDIT: YOOOO This video has hit over 10,000 views and my subs have nearly hit 300.
THAT is fucking TERRIFYING.
I guess not. Who cares if this one becomes unwatchable if a better version replaces it?
@@Godzilla_Cheeze The views have more than doubled since i posted that comment. It's just one mistake in the video, of many. I'm busy with other projects so i don't want to take time out to fix it. Sorry.

This is one of the few games that I actually finished. Here is an easy way to make money. Go into a store. Wait until after midnight. Loot the store. The next day, sell all that loot back to the store owner. Leave store, re-enter and repeat as until you get bored.
My method was always:
1) Join Mages guild
2) Make the cheapest Open spell
3) Cast Open on store entrance at night
4) Profit
Also I never finished Daggerfall, there's always way too much fun stuff to do outside of the main quest lol.
May as well do *ALL* the stores.
Your perfectly timed sarcasm and self-aware humor earned a sub. Well done. Havent heard such refreshing commentary from someone I hadnt heard of already in a long time.
"What's so great about daggerfall!!!"
*genuinely makes me wonder what's so great about daggerfall*
"I've played this game for ten years." Footage of shooting the same zombie at the bottom of a stairwell is 10% of the action XD
I spent ten years fighting that bastard.
I really wish games like Skyrim and Oblivion would have kept some of the features that Morrowind and Daggerfall had. I miss being able to murder towns people and then escaping the guards by either flying away or climbing the walls to run around the town ramparts and then jumping roof to roof like a demented Santa Clause.
Unity honestly produces the least amount of bugs out of any elder scrolls game, unless you go for the version on gog.
Games like it are about preparation and using your head. The difficulty and lack of hand holding are the puzzles to solve. Learning the game mechanics and how to navigate through the world is where the thrill comes in.
This game feels like an elder scrolls game, but has a deceptively deep layer of immersion in its factions and systems that got left behind for a detail that came only with a blend of hand crafting level design and story driven questlines with cutscenes.
Daggerfall is the TES game I always return to after tooling around in Bethesda's new games. This game, along with Mechwarrior 2 & its expansions are what kept me occupied back in the day before people would take time out of their day to scream at a stranger online for no reason. Also loved those old gold box D&D games, but you have to slow your PC down to a crawl to play them these days (or keep an old machine for that purpose).
And black coffee is where its at, especially with a splash (or more) of whisky.
I do love this game I have been playing the game on and off until I heard of the unity port and loved it after playing the unity port 👍
It's so much better dude, i can't believe it.
Nulfaga Castle Dungeon is a pain in the ass to complete. I think that if you save your money to buy a lot of teleport rolls (or you being a mage yourself) can save you a lot of time because you wont need to crawl back to the exit.
Rogue is the game that plays on an old typewriter. Daggerfall needs an IBM Selectric. Dfall is super hard until you figure out how to not suck at character creation and survive to level six, then it's a breeze. I hear, I never got that far.
7:52 it'd especially hard to mail back the floppy disc, especially daggerfall was released on cd-rom only.
Your jokes and style of humor is so random and godlike, it's a lot like MittenSquad. xD
You have no idea how big of a compliment that is to me!
@@CrappyGameReviews Of course, you're so funny and awesome. :D

@@CrappyGameReviews Oh god... I saw the news right after I saw your comment. I didn't know he passed, but..ah no. Rip Mittensquad. We will never forget him.
This game is worth it for the pixelated boobies alone. Who needs Skyrim mods when you can just play Daggerfall?
mmmmmmbooba
Love that acted intro.
- (paraphrase) Eh, if you find that old love letter... ummm, make it disappear please ;) Many share that sentiment.
Turns out it wasn't a love letter but literally a peice of paper that could have caused the largest war ever seen in tamriel.
Very very good writing.

I don't know about that, but thanks for the sentiment anyway lol
I hate how much i love this mess. nice vid bro keep it coming
>black coffee

bro that was my exact breakfast
What Daggerfall does is that you're not the chosen god-emperor, you're some random shit in a massive world. The music is amazing (it's a crime that the composer was hired by the gambling industry to work full time making music for slot machines). The world is just fine without you; you just sort of exist in it and nobody treats you like the main character. It's a fantasy life simulation thing, but a quite broken one. Very few games do this and very few of them have any sort of charm.
That black coffee comment was uncalled for :(
I drink black coffee. I hate prunes tho
Man, i love prunes.
So funny 😆🤣You deserve to make yourself known by the whole world
I needed this. Your comments are pure gold. My First Elder Scrolls was Skyrim in 2022, got 80% of the way through with the first run without knowing how to play and got bored with how easy it was and got curious about the originals, the Original was too far gone for me, and with the Unity mod Daggerfall became my go to Hardcore gaming experience. Its so insanely big, that I sometime wonder if anyone has actually played every dungeon and completed every quest.
massive w for the astolfo plushie joke
You kept me watching through the entire video well done! Any advice when it comes to writing scripts or do you wing it?
I do script, but mostly via vomiting whatever i think onto the page and then editing it down from there, and i typically write a whole script in about two hours, at 2AM on a tuesday before passing out from exhaustion in a completely healthy manner.
@@CaptainCiph3r You are truly a real philosopher
I've been wanting to get into daggerfall for a little while now and unironically this is the best video describing what the fuck is actually going on or not going on in the game that I've seen. I'll subscribe. Also Fuck you I'm a millennial that loves black coffee and grapefruit.
Ahh I remember playing my dads save when i was a kid and killing everyone i saw in a town and fighting guards then saving over his lmao. I just started playing now since i barely discovered daggerfall Unity. I've been playing non-stop now. I love this game
I am hopelessly addicted to the unity GOG version right now. Just sucks when I forget to F9... :(
Aaaaaaaaaaa i know exactly what you mean.
I´ve avoided Daggerfall and Arena for LONG time. But now it´s more like morbid curiosity and I play them from time to time. Luckily cheat code teleporting to the quest goal is your best friend (if you get lost or can´t find that ladder behind ten kilometer long corridor secret wall. UGH! Definitely not a game which you should play for long period of time or your brain will fall out.
Perfect review though! Could laugh my ass off xD
Daggerfall is insanely clunky and downright annoying at times but also incredibly fun for the countless possibilities it provides. You can easily rack up thousands of hours of playtime while haven't even really started the actual quest you've been sent on. You either love it or hate hate it tbh lol.
@@abadenoughdude300 Totally agree!👍
how do you cheat code teleport
been playing daggerfall for the past week or so and i keep restarting the game to try diffrent builds my most op build was a mage with spell absorption since i could just spam fire forever right now i thought it would be funny to play character who cant use magic since magic is pretty broken and i got a quest to kill a vampire only for it to be immune to all my weapons i was trying to think of a way to beat it then i remembered i made hand to hand a minor skill to be funny so i ended up running around punching it then jumping down a pit resting climbing up over and over till i beat it
take loans, buy horses, sell random loot to level merchantile, get it to 100 sell the horses for milions.
Rofl. If only Glitchthesda would go back to that for six.
You put an extra "1" around 2:10 for Daggerfall it's the elder scrolls two not three (three is Morrowind)
Very fun game. Quite the funny review.👍
Thanks man, appreciate it.
I like to say this when talking about how hard daggerfall is, Morrowind is easier with mods but daggerfall is slightly more playable with the few mods you'll find.
how do you have less than 1k subscribers when you're this funny
I drink black coffee and eat prunes. Git gud zoomer!!!
I am also in the camp of haven't beaten the game...lol...so many thousands of hours just...existing..
And robbing general stores..if they didn't want to get robbed they wouldn't make it so easy to rob them
IF YOU DID NOT WANT TO BE LOOTED WHY DID YOU MAKE YOUR LOOT SO EASILY LOOTABLE?
Getting lost is the greatest gift a man can give himself
Fun fact: the RUclips channel 'How Big Is The Map' walked from one side of the map to the other and it took 69 hours!
Yet didn't find a single coven
Nice!
It's possible to set up mouse look and controls to match Morrowind without Unity. Just takes some setting adjustments that aren't so obvious.
Hey, CGR. No new projects? I really feel like you channel could have grown a lot if you kept posting after this video, since it got a bit of attention
I'm working on new videos as I type this but it's been a long, tough year.
6:40 those aren't the only ones. Most space sims would technically be larger by sheer virtue of being in space. Whether or not that actually counts is up for depaye and depends on the game, I suppose.
Pretty good acting in the cutscene dang...
u r amazing! lol! good stuff man
When did the edict come down from on high that every sentence of a video game review/discussion/whateverthefuckthisgenreis video needs some form of joke shoehorned in, its so fucking tiring.

The rpg, political aspect and etc of this game with a more reasonably sized world would be amazing but we never got that. Morrowind was just a completely different game. Also it's weird how many different faces the emperor had before his death in Oblivion.
Daggerfall Unity supports mods :) I started one myself (Wilderness Overhaul).
If you want more emphasis on politics in the game, think of a cool system you want to implement and go for it. The folks on the forum are super friendly and helpful!

The Elder Scrolls III Daggerfall
It's overrated, especially in the last 10 years or so.
The game is basically a procedurally generated dungeon crawler/ roleplaying with little to actual narrative, and NPCs with absolutely no personality to speak of.
It all just feels so.... empty and soulless.

That's very sweet but oh lord please nooooo.
At 2:10 The Elder Scrolls III? That's Morrowind. Daggerfall was da bomb back in its day. Sure, the controls were wonky, but we didn't know any better. And without internet or strategy guides, I managed to learn the game mechanics just fine. In some ways, Daggerfall is superior than later titles. I'm still bitter they removed wall climbing with the next installment.
Yeah like i said above in the pinned comment i noticed it about 25 hours later.
@@CaptainCiph3r Lol. I only noticed your comment later too.
I personally found Morrowind better. Daggerfall was good, but I honestly thought that there were too many mechanics I didn't really like. Especially how you just automatically drown when you run out of breath or just immediately dying when your stamina reaches zero.
@@KitsuneYojimbo filthy casual

The entire opening cutscene doesnt count as video content
I literally cannot make a video intro better than the actual game's intro, it's a classic.
Funny to see all these Daggerfall reviews lately.
I got so stressed by the time limits I actually kind of got really confused and didn't know what to do outside the main quest lol (plus I wanna meet that Mannimarcussy)
I am not comparing, at all, but you can play Fallout 4 and Skyrim doing only random exploration. They are incomparable, I insist, but some other games can be played open world not caring about any main quest line. For my personal taste, games that are too huge turn me off. Like when Elite Dangerous is said to have 400 billion star systems, at least 32 galaxies, I say no thank you (to purely random generation). Again, maybe it works/feels fun in Daggerfall.
I also enjoy THOSE games but Daggerfall is a lot more... interesting? I guess?
@@CrappyGameReviews I personally think Daggerfall Unity is the way to go to make the game interesting. I honestly didn't really like the game vanilla, but Daggerfall Unity genuinely made me fall in love with it. Especially adding the right mods to it.
They are role-playing games, the random generated quests are supposed to be detailed by your imagination
Yo I really like your style hope you make it big on youtube
