Ken Squire is the best announcer NASCAR ever had. Clear. Concise. Dramatic. He made the Daytona 500 into the Great American Race. The clowns that do tv now talk too much, joke around too much. Less is more. Racing on TV needs more Ken Squires.

His CBS intros for the Daytona 500 were all I could think about in December and January growing up. Him and Ned Jarrett were awesome together.

My 1st 500. In the race pool with my dad and his friends, I asked everyone if I could have Richard because I drew AJ Foyt. They all agreed. I knew while standing on the motorhome that Donnie Allison was fixing to win. Next thing I knew I was a 15 year old with around $500 and my favorite won.....

I no longer have any interest in watching NASCAR races, but back in the 80's I was an avid fan. And Ken Squier was as much a part of the racing as the drivers and teams were. He was the person that brought the racing to life, bringing us the stories that made the events even more interesting. I have much respect for you, Mr. Squier, many thanks to you.

@@south_carolina_man no thanks, NASCAR has turned it's back on it's Southern roots. It will never be as good as it used to be for me.

A Guy in NC…… I totally agree. I stared loosing interest when Harry Gant retired. Followed Terry Labonte then he retired ☹️. Today it seems money buys rides not talent. I know I know that’s the future but I’m not liking it . I do miss the days w Jen a reporter would shove a microphone into the car and ask a driver what’s going on while on a pitstop!

The rest of the story was Cale Yarborough's speech at the 1979 NASCAR awards ceremony, I think it was in New York. About fighting the two Allisons, Cale Yarborough said; "It wasn't a fair fight, I should've had one hand tied behind my back!" That spunk is why I always liked Cale, even though I was an Allison fan.

Bobby stopped near the crash to check on Donnie. Yarborough confronted him through his window. "He ran toward me and started yelling at me," Bobby said. "And then he hit me in the face with his helmet, which really surprised me. I still had my seatbelts on. I had my helmet on, and that shielded me a little bit, but it cut my nose and my lips. By then, blood was dripping in my lap. I've either got to get out of the car and handle this or run from him the rest of my life. So I got out of my car and he went to beating on my fists with his nose."
