Sends a shiver up your spine, that whistle, but then that was what Casey was famous for when he was alive, building his own steam whistles that sounded like no other, the most famous being the "whippoorwill" 6-chime. That's where the phrase "They knew by the sound of the engine's moan that the man at the throttle was Casey Jones" in the song comes from.
Erich Diebold Why not get both a D&RGW 3 Chime whistle (same sound as #473's from the D&SNGRR) and possibly a SP 6 chime for Strasburg #89? And don't forget about getting a D&RGW 5 Chime and AT&SF 6 Chime for #7312 too!
I swear I hear that whistle and it means so much to me. I think in another life I must have been a railroaders daughter A wealthy one because since the day I was born I was loud and demanded to be comfortable.
Beautiful! I know nothing about it, but I know what I like. I never knew why they call it a Choo-choo Train until I saw this. What makes the choo-choo go off and on here in this video? Is the choo-choo the release of excess steam?
Its the sound from the stacks of the engines chugging as they work. The extra steam from the sides is from the cylinder drains, removing any water that collected in the cylinders. And of course the whistles.
Andre Ramsey last time I asked #5 is (non public) storage in Mineral, WA. It has some significant mechanical problems and there are no plans to bring it back to service in the near future; since 7 &17 just received extensive rebuilds. (MSRR, Crew)
Tim Brown Actually, #5 is in the storage area that is open to the public because it is part of the museum but it isn't stored with the other geared engines.
Ive never known the back round tin part of the rod house to be open to the public, at least I was always told to keep guest out of that part, but hey Im one of the newer guys so I could be wrong.

We need to get a whistle like #5's for our #3 steam locomotive at Hocking Valley Scenic Railway.

The iteration of 17 in the game Railroader is my most used locomotive in the game. I hope they can get its prototype running again soon.
At 00:39 and 00:53 I love those train whistles on these 2 2-8-2 mikado steam locomotives!!
I like the 5 the most from Mt. Rainier

Love that #5....
I love that engine most
I know that engineer, Mr. Scott Gordon!
1:06 listen to the POWER!
I like #17's (sounds a lot like Illinois Central) but #5 has the distinct voice of a Boston and Maine locomotive (since B&M used Ashton)
I was in the cab on this trip. Someday we should join our video's
#5's whistle is now on #17
They should build a replica of #5's original tender because the Vanderbilt tender it is using came off a NWP locomotive.
NWP actually.
My fault I meant to say NWP
Chehalis railroad has a porter mickado tender
I wish I could screen record this part of this video at 0:39
