The end of the concert is really stunning, when they leave the stage one by one while the music keeps playing. This is highly significant and disruptive, I think: it raises the question of the role of the artist at computer age. In ’81, this is such a visionary performance!

This is pure genius! I love Ralf's Robot dance, Karl funking it out, Wolfgang bopping in place, and Florian sulking over his keyboards.

I had a roommate at Boston U. in 1981 that was from Germany, who said you have got to check out Kraftwerk. So I visited him in Dusseldorf that summer and saw them live. Absolutely intoxicating! We even talked to them at a local "disco" - very nice guys. I've been a fan ever since!

I'm saying that nobody is more monumental(more bad ass in this case) than Kraftwerk. I'm glad I found this video because it is amazing to hear this version of Home Computer. I know that Kraftwerk is the milestone of electronic music. I wrote an essay on the lasting effects of Kraftwerk's timeless music on the music industry and their influence to music production and performance. Sorry for my blunt previous statement; I did not know it would be misinterpreted.

Nice, powerful and uptempo version of this song.
And now we are in the time that we sit a lot behind the homecomputer, we were wondering about that, when we listened to the Komputerwelt album in the early eighties.

By definition someone must've recorded the whole 1981 live gig, because there's a 30 minute documentary/interview that ends with this video. Who should we talk to in order to see the whole show? The camera guy? The network? Ralf? Jesus?

    • @Hermentotip

the documentary was made by austrian tv ORF, 29. January 1982. you can buy it in original high quality for around 50euros from them. maybe i will do it sometimes and upload it here. but i think they only have the tv show with interview and concert parts, not the whole concert anymore :(

This Heimcomputer life version it still the most electrifying thing I could see even today. Look all those guys concentrated in their machines, working so well and with that perfect attitude...
And Ralf is a true master (that dance is the hotest minimalist thing ever! :D)and I love the way he leaves the mic, takes those scores and walk out leaving the machines doing their job: What a genius! Too much elegant for some primitive sensitivities ;)

I love the "jam" feeling of this version! In fact I think the second leg of the european Computer Tour was like this. They played the songs a bit faster as well. I have the Utrecht concert and they play "Heimcomputer" similar to this version.

In almost every every interview of that time Ralf&Florian said that they don't like other groups who treat their machines like servants. They said they love their machines. Machines are not submissive to man nor are they superior. They are equal, in a friendly relationship. Sometimes they play machines, and sometimes machines play them. They are kind to them, and instruments are kind to them back. :)

CosmoCortney Yes, they did. I was at their show at the Ritz in NYC in 1981 and outside were tractor-trailers that someone told me they'd used to bring the whole Kling Klang studio on tour. An amazing show I'll never forget...especially during 'Pocket Calculator' where Florian was letting the audience tap on the keys of his Texas Instruments calculator that had a mounstrous cable bundle growing from it...

how good........puts a real meaning to 'live'.......... today you go to see a live electronic artist and they use 'ableton live' and just fire loops.
similar i guess, but so not in a lot of ways..
and i am a ableton user
man i wish i could make music with all those machines...they are so unruly, yet , they make magic....fantastic.

For this tour, they used as commercial synths a minimoog (top of 3 synths stack), polymoog, and Prophet 5. Maybe some more as well. That seemingly huge synth you see at 1:23 doesn't ring a bell, but I think that actually you see the keys of a synth standing below an electronic contrapion above it, likely a sequencer.
