I remember first seeing this video when I when it was uploaded here in 2006. I was in high school back then, and now I am a grown man. A lot has changed with myself and the world, but I'm still as amazed by Kraftwerk as much, if not more, than I was back then. This video brings back so many memories of back then.
I remember when I was twelve, I caught my dad rumaging through some old records of his. The autobahn record caught my eye...I asked to play it. He set it in the phonograph and played it. From then on I fell in love with all forms of electronic music...
Cool...I dig musicians that love the musik that they make, and it explains the approving looks that Ralf shoots to his band. Since he wrote the tune, and that tune has carried him into middle age, that speaks volumes...joy!
The FIRST - the best - the very greatest Grandfathers of Techno and Trance... they started it all - I listened to them in the late 70's as a 15 - 16 yr. old when they seemed very odd... thanks for the video!
These new arrangements for Pocket Calculator are great ! They put a modern touch without left the nostalgia of the music. Kraftwerk is such a great band.
I´ve never seen any band like Kraftwerk, who did electronic music in the early 70´s(except Jarre), and made lyrics in German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and several other languages. And the fact that two of them, as engineers, built some of the synth instruments they play with their multiple skills. >Awesome!
Gives me a happy happy feeling, remember when i bought Pocketcalculator on a maxi-songle with light green convolute in 1981.And me and my freind listened constantly to it for about 4 hours lol, nad its still one of the coolest tracks :-D
The Fathers of Electronic music. Split Enz and Crowded House were inspired by these guys. They look a bit old now, but were very ahead of their time when this music first came out...about the time the first pocket calculators came out! Loved watching this.
I remember this band, in 1986 with computer world, it was ahead of its time, because now we see palmdevices( celulars, mp4, cameras), that you program yourself in to the future, and this version sounds beter. Gretings fron Puerto Vallarta Mexico, Thank you for posting
Kraftwerk will always be great to those who see through all the crap that exists today and comprehends how far ahead these guys were. They not only invented electronica, but the actual instruments themselves ....
Yes I was there too. I also saw them twice in 1998 at the Hollywood Palladium and in New York at the Hammerstein Ballroom. But the first time was in 1981 in New York, which was their first US tour if I am not mistaken.
mr i-know-everything-about-music-and-im-real-smart, u know these guys are pretty much the fathers of electronic music, they were the first people to experiment with such technology back in the 70s
I always took this song as an homage to the simple synthesizers they used and when he sings "I'm the operator with my pocket calculator" I think of him behind a synthesizer playing on it. Adding and subtracting etc. are just metaphores for making music.
If it wasn't for Kraftwerk, many of today's music wouldn't exists. If you were to listen to many of today's Pop, Hip Hop, Dance music you will notice a lot of Kraftwerk beats in it. God bless these innovators.
Haha classic! Thanks for posting this, brings back memories of the guys who inspired so many. Kraftwerk are undoubtedly among, if not THE godfathers of modern music.
I love electronic music and love bands like Daft Punk, justice and so forth. Now I'm going back to the origin of electronic music and listening to bands such as Kraftwerk and I must say their music is very good and well done for the 1970's.
ABSOLUTELY FU+KING BRILLIANT!!! Considering how long ago the original was made and how they updated it AND did part of this in Japanese!!!! Just blows my mind!
Kraftwerk rocks! I first heard their music on the Saturday Night Live skit Sprockets back in the early 90s, but didn't know it was Kraftwerk. Then, when I bought one of their cassette tapes (I'm old!), my old high school buddy and I started listening to it in his dorm room and we heard the same song...we looked at each other with mouths agape!
I totally agree,Balanescu Quartet, only played covers.I saw them live when they released 'Possesed' and they also played songs from Depeche Mode and Human League.
Because their lyrics were always minimalist. This song was from 'Computer World', which was based around the innovation of the computer age in the late 70's-early 80's.
Thanks Jd, They are great because they are good, but they are not _trying_ to be good. They just play and do their own thing, have fun, and share it with us. Best way to perform. Certain bands are just really great in concert- Kraftwerk, OMD,, Devo, not always the ones you might imagine.
I sit corrected... LOL You're right and that album was released in 1970 which would make the odds even better that most viewing this were not even born. :)
I agree to an extent. "Electronic" instumentation has been around for some time (yes, as far back as the 20's). However, the instrumentation was relegated to background melody and not the sole focus of the entire song. I think it safe to say that though they didn't invent electonic instrumentation, they were the first electronic band...forgoing any other traditional instrumentation.
what i love about this video so much is how two or three people in the crowd on the left are jumping up and down pumping their fists up in to the air as if this is the defining moment in their life! ( 0:17 - 0:40 ish) deleriously triumphant! all hail the pocket calculator! :)
in an interview, ralf hutter said that this is for a better resonance This "gimmick" makes the sound more clear and pure And that's because Kraftwerk are "crazy" about sound perfection!
jajajaja....me gusto tu comentario - tienes un buen sentido del humor - las toallas quedaron bastante mojadas del sudor de los Kraftwerk...jejeje - Grandes Kraftwerk.
They changed over to all-digital over the last few years. There were interviews I read during the US tour that indicated they'd basically re-done Kling Klang Studios, converting the old analogue sequences and sounds to digital loops (got them working in soft-synthesizers).
can people STOP bagging these men, they came up with great electronic music. If you don't like it don't listen to it - simple. I think they're the best.
@harpsinth Kraftwerk. When this song (originally only in German) became successful, Kraftwerk decided to English, Japanese AND French versions of the song. Kraftwerk made all the lyrics, sung by Ralf Hutter.
Kraftwerks influence on modern music cannot be denied. Even if they weren't the first musicians using electronic devices, theyve been without a doubt the most influential. But suddenly they decided they want to sound exactly like they do and do not develop their sound further. Besides, all they're doing nowadays is playing some remixes of their old songs. They inspired many genres, but it got into their heads and now they want to sound KRAFWERK.
I remember first seeing this video when I when it was uploaded here in 2006. I was in high school back then, and now I am a grown man. This live version of Pocket Calculator is one of the best that I have seen so far!
1970年にこんな音源聞けたなんてドイツの人達がうらやましいですね、でも私YMO聞いて感動してたから一緒な感覚かな、どっちも素晴らしいですね、
I remember when I was twelve, I caught my dad rumaging through some old records of his. The autobahn record caught my eye...I asked to play it.
He set it in the phonograph and played it.
From then on I fell in love with all forms of electronic music...
This is the real definition of electronic music!
Cool...I dig musicians that love the musik that they make, and it explains the approving looks that Ralf shoots to his band.

These new arrangements for Pocket Calculator are great ! They put a modern touch without left the nostalgia of the music. Kraftwerk is such a great band.
Ralf really loves this song, he always seems so happy when they're playing it!
これをLIVEで観られた人世代が羨ましいなぁ

nice concert. nice dvd. nice sound. nice visuals. everything is superb and technological. these are kraftwerk. the gods of electronic music.
When I heard this in my 8th grade, I was so much inspired. Now, I understand all the lyrics and stays still fresh to my ears. Amazing.
Gives me a happy happy feeling, remember when i bought Pocketcalculator on a maxi-songle with light green convolute in 1981.And me and my freind listened constantly to it for about 4 hours lol, nad its still one of the coolest tracks :-D
their performances are so theatrical and sophisticated..finally artists who aren't prostutes!
The Fathers of Electronic music. Split Enz and Crowded House were inspired by these guys. They look a bit old now, but were very ahead of their time when this music first came out...about the time the first pocket calculators came out! Loved watching this.
I saw Kraftwerk live in Dublin, Ireland back in September. The best gig I've EVER been to!
Go boy !
They sound so amazing. The live recording for this album is one of 'the' greats.
this is by far the coolest song I ever heard of.
Fantastic post. Great video and sound. I love the section where they start singing in Japanese and the crowd goes bonkers.
I had the privilege of seeing Kraftwerk live in a rare performance at the 9:30 Club in DC -- Summer 2005. Amazing show!
these guys started the electronic music in the late sixties.godfathers of house, techno
I know they're the "founders" of electronic music. But this sounded like a gameboy tune. I thought it was boring as hell.

Yeah, it is. Couple years ago, max.
Saw them at Coachella, had been a long time fan. Their sound system was capable of lethal bass levels. So awesome.
this is an example of perfect music
What would the world of music be without Kraftwerk? I love this group.
I always took this song as an homage to the simple synthesizers they used and when he sings "I'm the operator with my pocket calculator" I think of him behind a synthesizer playing on it.

18 years of epic gamer concert
These guys, Tangerine Dream and Larry Fast practically invented Electronica and modern Dance Music by themselves.

it is amazing to have a band do so many songs in many different languages especialy when theyre pioneers or synth/tehcno/ all that nonsense

I can't think to compose 30 years ago.

omg this is such an adorable song i can hardly contain myself

This song never gets old. :D
Finally artists who will never get laid ever.
Or have any musical talent, at all.
Humans do not stay young but music keeps the soul that way, that is the beauty of it/ music is the ultimate art.
awesome german synth pop new wave, i totally love this sound very much, with the germanic vocals
Brings back memories, true pioneers! I can see where the blue man group got their influences.
They changed over to all-digital over the last few years. There were interviews I read during the US tour that indicated they'd basically re-done Kling Klang Studios, converting the old analogue sequences and sounds to digital loops (got them working in soft-synthesizers).
Damn they were great at the Greek Theater in LA a couple years ago. Third time I saw them and one of the best live shows I've ever been too.
"I'm the operator with my pocket calculator!!"
Dur, der......deuuuuro....
Muy bueno!!!!
Ongaku
I was at that show too. Amazing amazing. Bass like nobody's business, too.... Numbers and Computer World absolutely killed.
With this music, they capture the spirit of a modern, computerized, and industrial era.
what bottleovodka said, me too.
can people STOP bagging these men, they came up with great electronic music. If you don't like it don't listen to it - simple. I think they're the best.
great song!!! so simple and gorgeous sound !!!!
I'm from a technoheads family. My parents and I love this song !!
Kraftwerk are just really fabulous! I am just so sad that I couldn't make this concert, I didn't know when they were in Japan!
@harpsinth
Kraftwerk. When this song (originally only in German) became successful, Kraftwerk decided to English, Japanese AND French versions of the song. Kraftwerk made all the lyrics, sung by Ralf Hutter.
Dat music quality for a 2006 video

I've never actually heard a Kraftwerk song before. To think they wrote a song about the pocket calculator! What geeks!
Oh god this is ridiculously good. Fantastic visuals.
I just got into these guys...that's just awesome how they just stand there with those laptops and make music...
Thank you for posting this video. Love it!
Yes! And I even have an old calculator from my father, with that old big buttons and even transistors! Very catchy XD
que honor de RADIOHEAD cerrar el concierto de Kraftwerk!!
These guys invented their own sound. AWESOME!
I read in a DK book on Spies about how a "bug" can be stashed in a calculator, and records conversations even when in use!
This is the best video of this song on YT. Thank you!
pioneer of the electonic music... genius
