    I love how you referred the glutinous rice as “a new friend.”
    Growing up in a Filipino household, the only type of glutinous rice food we ate was “Suman.” A simple dessert, sprinkled with freshly grated coconut and a sugar/sesame seed powder.
    I have yet to try other forms of glutinous rice meals 💚

    Grew up in the Jewish culture. This Lunar New Year actually begins in September or early October. The day is full with religious prayers & afterward family celebration (the last time I attended where my father goes & there was lots of wonderful music!) We would go one night to one set of grandparents and the other the next. Brisket (beef cooked until it falls apart, you would Love it Sarah!)is a staple along with wonderful Challah bread. That's how it was on the east coast of U.S. for me. But, you'll find it's different foods for Jews in other places around the globe. Thanks for asking this question, very interesting. Love hanging out with you, Kyuho, Beemo and your family (actually potato pancakes, for Jews, are made at Hannukah, somewhere around solstice time)

  • @craftswithchristina

    The food looks amazing! I would gladly eat it for a full week lol. Kyuho's mom really spoils you both haha. I made Korean "pancakes" with squash and it was SO good. I was eating them like potato chips. For sure will be making it again. The pears here in the U.S. (at least in my area where pear trees are common) are pretty sweet but the texture is similar to how Sarah described them. Sometimes they can be as sweet as candy. Speaking of candy lol, walnuts are commonly harvested here too and candied walnuts are some of my favorites! Also, the "this should be opposite" line cracked me up LOL.

    OMG, I absolutely LOVE this video! Coming off from a high from your previous video of the lunar celebrations, and all the amazing takeaways, it's just wonderful to watch this - it's so awesome to see them all being so well appreciated in a very normal way! I love getting takeaways too, especially well hearty homecooked food. It's just so special, and you can tell that Kyuho's mum puts in a lot of love. And so very generous! Goodness...that galbijjim....she must have made a HUGE pot of it???! Didn't you guys have that like twice on the Lunar Day dinner (like re-filled?), and this portion that she gave to you, was enough for at least 2 meals, for 2 of you? WOW! I love it that you actually gave names to each of the jeon! Maybe you can do one next time for the side dishes, please? It's always so wonderful to watch other countries/cultures and their cuisines, etc. For my family (Malaysian Chinese married to Australian white man, living in Australia), during Lunar NY, our must have is this dish called Lo Hei (YuSheng), it's like a mixed shredded vegies, variety of condiments and sauces - very colourful, and the highlight is the raw fish strips, so, it's also known as the 'seven coloured raw fish salad'. In Australia, I just use smoked salmon as my 'raw fish'. We all stand up around this big platter and toss the ingredients together with chopsticks while saying out all kinds of well wishes for good health, long life, success, prosperity, abundance, etc. During this celebration, the snacks and cookies are also a must-have in the household, and mandarins. The kids bow to my parents and to us and their godparents, and receive their 'angpow' (red packets with money). Ohhh, I love glutinous rice too! But the one I've been brought up with is quite different, as it's more savoury. Usually, the main ingredients are pork mince, black mushrooms, chestnuts, and fried Chinese sausages. this Korean version one looks yum! Thank you for your videos! I always look forward to watching them on Sunday before going to bed! Sooo funny about Kyuho with his subway, haha! Same in my household - the boys get sick of rice/noodles, and want subway or burgers or toasties! I can eat my rice/noodles all the time!

    I do that thing too when I eat 김 ㅋㅋㅋ it's the best way!
    My aunts and my mom used to make traditional foods for huge familiy (like more than 30 ppl?), but after my grandparents passed away, our family was started not gathering as 'Big family', yet just their own small family members. For mine, just my mom, dad, brother and me. We all live in different regions so we do barbeque (삼겹살, 한우), drink and talk to each others. I think more and more family in Korea do as ours in holiday as times go by. Shrinking down, minimailizing all the traditional efforts and using the holiday as chance to meet and catch up.

    Oh my gosh, that is one helluva stash of Lunar New Year food! I've never tried different types of jeon beyond kimchi jeon and I feel like I'm really missing out 🥲In my family, we celebrate the Lunar New Year by having a reunion dinner with my dad's side on the eve of the new year, and then on the first day, we have a big potluck lunch together. On the second day, my nuclear family and I go back to my mum's side of the family, where we have more big family meals. Kyuho’s mama’s love language is definitely cooking for you both, and sending you home with many dishes. As a mom of a 26 year old, that I miss every single day-because he lives in another state, I will always make sure he eats well when he’s in town, and I will always send him food products home or through the US mail, or even through Amazon. I am so envious of your family Lunar New Year celebration! The galbi jiim….OMGEEE! I love jeon. I always get the pollack jeon at our local H-Mart. The only time I've had Korean pears was in a salad from the Korean restaurant. They are sooooo expensive to buy here. One day I will splurge and buy a package (I think they come in a package of 3 or maybe 4).

We regularly get them from the Asian grocery store, and maybe it's just me and liking fruits in general, but both Asian pears and Western pears are good to me in their own way. I'll eat either any day of the week. Bartlett's are my favorite. Love the flavor of that variety.
    Oh man, Subway! The only food everyone eats in literally every Korean drama known to man hahaha.

    Yum....I see several things I'd love to try. Korean meals always seem like they would take so much time to prepare....all the different side dishes...a main soup...etc. But I'd love to try the jeon....I think I've seen an onion one...green onion...like a street food? Anyway, I wondered...can you freeze some of those foods for other meals? I tend to package up into small meals and freeze them so we don't get tired of them....are any of those foods freezable? Edit to add: Do you have a recipe for the yaksik or know where I can find a good one...it sounds amazing too!

    I dunno. 🤔😂 When I first learned how to make kimchi jeon and green onion jeon I didn’t think it was weird to call them “pancakes”. Mostly because of potato pancakes. My parents are Eastern European and I grew up in Chicago USA. Potato pancakes, especially at the holidays, especially if you go to a German Christmas market, were a staple of my childhood. And a year round favorite at Jewish delis in the city. So I thought of jeon as savory pancakes in this way. I ADORE them 👍❤️

    • @2hearts1seoul
      @2hearts1seoul  Год назад +3

      ‘Fritter’ seems to be the slightly more accurate word imo, since they’re meat, seafood, and vegetables-more savory ingredients. Pancakes to me as a Canadian is the sweet breakfast kind with maple syrup 😂🥞 Potato jeon is actually really popular in Korea as well! 😄

    That was the one thing I absolutely hated about living in Korea, there were no English subtitles for Netflix and almost no English subtitled showings for Korean movies in the theatres (you had to live in Seoul to be able to find anything), So we didn't watch movies like Train to Busan or Parasite until YEARS later, lol, while all our family living outside of Korea had seen everything already. It's not like we couldn't communicate ok in Korea, we lived there for 5 years, but we never ever got to a point where we understood it enough to watch movies and stuff without subtitles

    • @2hearts1seoul
      @2hearts1seoul  Год назад

      Yup 🙃 I mean, I need English subs for movies/shows in ENGLISH to know what’s going on (sometimes parts are mumbled, etc.) There’s so much content on Netflix Korea where they don’t bother to put English subs. They should offer Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese subs, imo.

      It’s difficult, but not impossible. You’ll likely have to cook for yourself the vast majority of the time, because there is hidden meat/fish in soooo many things. There are a few western style vegan restaurants in Seoul though.

    NICE video. Gives new meaning to "Clickbait" since I watched this episode while hungry. BiG mistake. But the food looks incredible. The sights. The sounds. The only thing missing was the SMELL of course. One question: does Kyuho know that ELBOWS on the table while eating is rude? Is that not considered rude in Korea? One would think since he was KATUSA while in the military, and presumably familiar with American (and Western?) customs that he would know this?
