I'm doing research to improve our games as well. It definitely requires at least one person to really know the game. Ours was a bit bumpy as well, and so I'm watching lets plays and rules so that I can know it better for the next one. Its tough cause someone kinda has to know every faction and what they can do. Its a lot to pick up on the first play, and people cant just look at what others are doing.
Whoa! Between the production value of the videos and the teaching style, this makes this the best video on the Internet to learn ROOT. Subscribed for sure!
Got this game for Xmas and watch both your videos on root just to get the ins and outs. I had no idea anyone would make such a well organized video format to describe anything. Most rules have been detailed out if not all. Thanks for making these videos and if you ever make more root videos I'll be watching and then probably playing the expansions. The game is clever and is best played not talking to the other players about crushing the alliance.
Hi Tyler, thanks so much for the kind words! You provided good words of wisdom at the end of your comment. Sounds like that is coming from your personal experience during a game :)?
@@ModernTablegamer unfortunately our alliance play at the table didn't have any fun do to our bias against them growing. We got an expansion today just so we can replace the alliance with the lizard group lol.
Many thanks for these Root tutorials. I'm relatively new to the hobby and have recently mustered up the courage to invest in this game. Your explanations are the clearest I've found, and your video production/editing really helps with learning.
Love the production quality and clear explanations! Hope you're back soon to share even more How To Plays (and maybe even touch on the other Root factions)!
Incredible Camera scenes! Well described, the instructions from the box are good and all but with so much going on it can be hard so the visual is perfect. With this new knowledge, I might actually try to play alliance.
That was my draw to the game. There are several expansions with new factions. I’m looking forward to the upcoming Kickstarter for the Marauders expansion!
Thanks man! In my opinion this was the best way to learn this game! I understood things much more clearly than even the digital game's tutorial! Please do the expansions pretty pretty please :)
Your pronunciation was great! It is mar-ki (like in kiwi)- zz de ch-a (like aw) Markizz de chaw (Marquise de chat) 😊 Thanks for those 2 video. I'm normally the one who explained the rules to all of my friend, and even if it is not a complicated game, with the different factions I felt overwhelmed. This video helps me a lot to understand the basic for myself and help to understand every faction. Now when I plau with a lot of new players, I send them this video so it is less complicated for me.
Great video! Just a quick clarification about 17:28 - as far as I know, you wouldn't be able to put a sympathy token on the southern clearing, because it is not actually adjacent to the clearing on the left, right? (rivers don't connect clearings?)
Also for the rabbit clearing to the north. I think you are right. The law of Root 2.2.1: A clearing is adjacent to all other clearings linked to it by a path
Peter, I can hardly express how jubilant we were to discover you had also prepared an instructional vid for ROOT after having lapped up your instructions over & over for Cole's Pax Pamir. I wrote you then to say we appreciated your approach above all others (to be sure, you have several co-creators in this space) and the same remains true here. A great introductory vid for ROOT and a marvellous detailed breakdown of the individual (base) factions. Indispensable stuff! We had hoped as two players, my wife and I, that you might've added something on the recent (base) bots as well (Clockwork Exp), which fill out the game to Cole's recommended 3-4P setting. I think a lot of (new) people woke up to this game recently as was evidenced during the recent KS for The Marauders expansion. If you haven't considered a mini ROOT series already, perhaps a peek into any of the subsequent factions would fill this out nicely, such as The Underground set, which Leder Games recommends especially as we find ourselves around smaller tables during this COVID hibernation. Many thanks again & continued luck with your future work. The community is indebted to your hard work. Cheers. Carl
Hi CP CP! I really appreciate your kind words and verbal support! I like the idea of adding a couple more Root expansions to my lineup in the future. I do have a couple on my shelf I need to get to like the Clockwork expansion. I’m so glad you found these helpful!
17:26 I thought adjacency for clearings eligible for sympathy tokens followed the same definition of adjacency for clearings for purposes of movement in that they're connected via paths. Some of the clearings you're pointing to in this example are nearby but don't have connecting paths.
Superb rules teach - I used your rules teach of Pax Pamir as well and that game went great - I'm hoping to play Root one day, I just have to convince others to take the plunge!
Wow! Thanks for your comment! I have the same problem with Root. There are a lot of players, but I just have to convince people I know to play. I picked up The Clockwork Expansion just so I can get this to the table (solo) :)
Just want to say at 2:37 it's not just battle, any time they are removed you can use field hospitals. If a Favour card removed them, you spend 1 card for each clearing you want to save
@@ModernTablegamer I think a basic faction overview would be perfect! An advanced video could be choosing what factions to play with based off the number of players.

I have a question. So after the eyrie dynasties fulfills there decree for a full turn, does the whole decree reset including the loyal viziers? Or do the same cards need to be kept in the decree slots and you just keep adding 1-2 cards every turn?
I know this is a bit behind the times but I have a question. At ~12 minutes you say you can't attack the Cats because you both have 3 warriors in the grove. But doesn't the Lord of the Forrest rule kick in breaking the tie? I realize it was done to show turmoil.
THANK YOU! This and the other video pretty much cover all my questions, pretty tough because this game is not in my native language. Still I was able to follow the rules along with your video and it made sense! Now I just need to find one in my own language to see how I can explain this game to my friend, without sounding like a crazy person hahaha
These are great videos! I have a question. When you were going over a scenario where Eyrie had an equal number of warriors to Marquee, wouldn't Eyrie still be able to follow the decree because they rule any tied clearings?
Can anyone explain something to me please? If you use strike with the vagabond, and there are no warriors in that clearing, do you decide which building you take out, or does your opponent decide like they do in a battle?
Fantastic video - quick rules check here: 27:10 I believe the Vagabond gets +1 victory point per hostile 'piece' removed in battle (this includes: tokens and enemy buildings), alongside Warriors?
@@ModernTablegamer Great thanks, I seem to learn something new about Root every day. Do you intend to do learn to play videos, for the expansion factions at some point in 2021? If so that would be wonderful.
For the spread sympathy action, at 17:25 in the video, you point to clearings adjacent to the sympathetic clearing. You point to two clearings connected by rivers and one connected by a path to the sympathetic clearing. However, in the definition of clearing adjacency, clearings are only adjacent if they are linked by paths. I don't think the two clearings connected by rivers to the sympathetic clearing are considered adjacent.
14:14 Maybe you discussed this in another video, but here it's a bit confusing: you should explain that the WA dies NOT start on the board (no bases/sympathy tokens) which throws off a lot of people. It seems like their first move is basically figuring out what clearing you'd like to take over first, but from that point on, your sympathy tokens are placed based on the adjacent locations... I think?
Si if I understood correctly… if the vagabond slips into a forest during birdsong, it can’t move out of it with a move action and goes directly into Evening?
Can the vagabond stack quest of the same suit (ones they completed already) and then gain massive amount of points For me if its like that its to OP becuase vagabond has a lot more options than the other factions in terms of VP + he can literally just take 2 cards always and just stack quest so he can earn a lot VP later
Thank you very much for the video. I have a doubt, tho. What happens if someone triggers the Woodland Alliances Outrage, but they don't have ANY cards in the hand? Does the WA not get a card, or can't the other player not attack?
@@ModernTablegamer I read somewhere that they pick a card from the stack. I also played the game on the computer and coincidentally exactly this happened, and the computer gave the WA a card from the stack. So it must be that :) Thank you very much anyways
Question: does each slot have to be filled in the decree? Like in the first turn can you just put one card up there? And if so, do you skip the empty decree slot? And continue left to right as usual?
Not each slot has to be filled on first turn. Yes local viziers are supposed to be placed on first turn. It your choice on filling the decree. Yes skip the empty decree slot and continue left to right as usual
Now you have thousands of us calling it the Marcus the Cat faction. lol. Such a well edited video and explanation. Just got the game today. Looking forward to learning/playing it sometime soon.
Hey, about the situation when birds are fighting cats and its 3 on 3 and dices are 0 0, shouldn't birds control the area and therefore be able to build something? beacuse of their power to control the area when they are tied with the number of enemy soldiers?
No, because the recruiter building that the cat owns in that clearing counts towards their rule. In that example, the cats actually have 4 pieces, versus the birds’ 3 pieces, so their is no tie to break.
Do I have to do every act in the decree or do I just act for the cards in the decree. For example do I fall into turmoil if I have only three in the decree?
Question: when you get to allied status with a faction as the vagabond, is it that you aid once to get 2VP or do you have to Aid Three times going forward to get the 2VP?
One more question: when the vagabond uses a dominance card, allying with the faction with least VP, can they still win early by meeting the conditions on that dominance card? Thanks so much! Really appreciate all the work you put into these videos and I just subscribed today!
If you can please consider making a video on the rules and prerequesites to play the solo game. I heard there was something else players needed like and expansion or so but i might be wrong. Do you know anything about this? Excelent video.

At the 34:02 mark you said that "if *hostile* you score 1 victory point per *warrior* removed". That is incorrect!! You score one victory point per *piece* removed. It's printed right on the Vagabond's player board where your finger was pointing!! A *piece* could include a warrior, a building or a token from the player you just did battle with.
35:35 This is incorrect, when repairing items during an evening's rest, you ALSO refresh those items. The player board is wrong because the original rules for repairing always refreshed items but the updated rules changed it so that only happens when resting, not when using hammers. and for some reason Leder games forgot to update that part of the vagabond's player board despite updating other parts to reflect the new rules. an evening's rest should read "If in a forest, repair and refresh all damaged items."
This makes me think... First this is probably a good name for a cat. People would think you're saying "My kitty cat" when it's really Marquise de Cats... Hmmm... I wonder how many people have already named a new kitten after this faction already with a similar thought?
The guy who taught me to play, didn't do that great of a job. He started off well, but the only bits of information I got from him on how to play the Eyrie was what he liked about them. Not too helpful. Thanks for putting these vids together.
