So of course, through the left’s way of attempting to take global ideas and incorporate them into everyday life, they introduced the idea of people as belonging to a combination of these categories. Since, of course, nobody acts completely masculine or feminine, the idea of infinite genders came into play. Well... it’s safe to say that this is just personality and character. I mean, there are technically an infinite amount of personalities since everybody’s unique. But to confuse this basic human idea with the idea of masculine and feminine in wordplay is beyond absurd.

okay I see some of y'all being hateful and I get it, we absolutely don't need any white people infringing or taking up space in poc and indigenous/native spaces, but let this serve as a reminder that all indigenous and native people don't all have the same stereotypical image you're imagining in your head, this individual IS native, they have ties to their indigenous roots, and they're taking time to educate us on a beautiful part of their culture. it can be hard to tell because they're white presenting but they're valid too folks. also side note, no you shouldn't use the term two-spirit if you're not native. while you may identify with its fluidity and theory, it has specific cultural ties that literally do not count if you're not apart of the culture. not even people who have direct indigenous ancestry can always claim to be native because it's so much more than a title it is a lifestyle, it is upholding traditions, it is recounting stories, and it is connecting to your people
This looks like fun. Can I try it? I hear "Two Spirit" used a lot when younger people try to argue that my ancestors were transgender. This is not the first time I seen people try to take others cultures and beliefs and twisted for there own benefits, I know the Indigenous hawaiians are having this problem.
Thank you for this video, very straightforward and easy to digest for people who may not be familiar with the term (aka ME). Also the host’s voice is very comforting somehow?? Lol

I asked, perhaps 10 years ago, a wide selection of Native American two-spirit leaders if I, as a European, could / might openly identify myself as two-spirit. I did it as respectfully as I could. They said NO. That was the end of it. I wouldn't go here, out of respect. Privately: do whatever you want. Investigate the traditions. There is a heap of inspiration there.
Two-spirit is of Anishnabbe Origin as far as the translation goes. Maybe some other tribes, but what is being taught is different to what it traditionally is.
Hi, I'm a transgender Metis woman who grew up with very little connection to any kind of Indigenous culture. I've been confused about what two-spirit means for a very long time and when I try to research it I often find a lot of conflicting opinions and misinformation. I'm still a bit confused after watching this video. I'm fine with my identity as transgender and not looking to change that, but I would like to understand this term better. I currently wouldn't feel confident explaining it if somebody were to ask me what the difference is.

Unless I'm misinterpreting that last line there, why can't someone who's non-Native identify as Two-Spirit? If something spiritual is truly the the truth to reality, shouldn't that spirituality not be gatekept to one group of people and accessible to all? That always confused me about certain religious/spiritual beliefs.
Not a poetic identity for non native people ... Genuine question- do these beliefs hold true for the global community or do native people think that this is a phenomenon that only exists within the native communities? How much native do you have to be in order to qualify as two spirit? Can you be two spirit if you are fully native but appeal to Western lifestyles and traditions instead of culturally native traditions?

Same! I have white skin and blue eyes, yet I am half Native American, half Mexican. I live in a reservation, and I am recognized as a tribal member and Native American. It makes me happy to see that I am not the only one who has this sort of "contradicting" appearance! It does not make us any less than who we are! Proud Ojibwe here 💓

Yes I can understand that feeling, I'm part Native American, but have light skin, and such, but I wasn't raised in a Native American culture really either. But I still have always felt like the Native American part of me mattered, but it has always made me feel odd, and kind of bad knowing that no one sees me that way, and might think I'm lying or faking. But race and skin color are not the same thing, even though society likes to act like it is. Like even in doctors offices they ask you tell them your ethnicities and they check a box that says Caucasian or white, which I find very rude. Sorry I wrote so much.
Records regarding native societal roles are typically written by settlers and are inaccurate. To see proof of this claim you have to go to the source; the natives themselves. Our elders hold our knowledge.
Sadia Oshanee von Wahl I don’t mean any disrespect your culture or your people, but that seems like a really stupid way of passing on knowledge. The human brain tends to get things wrong. They did a study where they took a bunch of 9/11 survivors and asked them questions about it after they had already taken a survey a year prior. Even though every one of them said they remembered it like it was yesterday, they actually told it a bit differently then they did the previous time, adding certain details and leaving out ones that were in there before. Also, I feel like writing things down in books so that multiple people can absorb that information. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for passing on traditions, but something as fragile as relying on the human memory isn’t very good idea lol.
@@benawesomebw1197 that isn't our fault tho lol. our history was colonized and we're lucky we have the information on our cultures that we have today thanks to our ancestors. I think I'd rather listen to an elder about my culture, than a book written by a white person many years ago.
@@mrtikky.5575 You know it’s possible to pass on information through books that weren’t written by white people lol. If you want to be fair, the written language of tribes that have one is Latin because it was brought by white people (in my region I see quite a few Halq'eméylem signs). My point being, the written word is usually better then verbal as human memory can be deceiving, so in the modern day it’s probably better to have something written down just in case. XD

Fox if you “refuse” to, that just means you’re not respectful to the whole community. just because you aren’t respectful, doesn’t mean other people aren’t. and the “a” also stands for asexual.
As a native I never learned any of this I was raised off the reservation and in American public school and honestly learning this I feel like questioning my gender cause I'm nonbinary already and learning new words for what I already feel is fantastic
Questioning your gender? How confused can a human be?? A gender cant be experience, as your assign to it by birth. ( i.e a boy that says he thinks is a girl is impossible.. simply ask him what makes you think your a girl? What other response can he give except social activities that are more female like?(i.e playing with dolls, color pink, etc)) Anyways hope you do good in life
@@slimisslow244 true. Those people are simply feminine men or masculine women. But society is the problem because both liberal and conservative people start labelling feminine boys as 'girls' or masculine girls as 'boys' or saying that they act/talk like them, which makes those people confused, particularly if they are children hearing this stuff, so they think they are non-binary/genderqueer etc

But some people of all cultures throughout history, not just Native American society, must have felt both feminine and masculine? So it can't be unique to them?
People confusing their anima and animus archetypes with a second spirit. We all have the unconscious archetypes, and yes, were one to integrate theirs into the conscious mind, the result is akin to an experience of having “two spirits”. Mostly people are not even aware of their unconscious, let alone the archetypes, to have a similar experience and therefore fall into the category of male/female. None the less, we are all just a mind. The mind itself has no gender and never did. Until this is grasped, the gender debate will get more and more ridiculous.
Rye Noe I think only the uneducated on the Navajo would believe his interpretation... also he can’t decide whether to have long hair or be bald... a bit of a crazy over there
What in the critical theory nonsense is this? Not to mention the exclusion and discrimination on who can be a 2 spirit. This needs to be flagged as hate speech
For a different viewpoint....the concept of a free nation is held dear to nearly all Indigenous here. Tribes split into so many clans and separate tribes because of a difference of options and beliefs. In vast majority of this, it was a respected decision and accepted nearly everywhere. Unless....harm is done. But our cultures have changed, and just like every human being on earth, we either March with that progression of discovery or maintain traditional values. Having said that, gender and biology were in fact separated for many tribes. Women and men would treated, in most cases, the same. Gender wasn't thought about at all. This is why two spirit is a new word, but not a new concept. We had no dictatorships because our world existed in hoops. No one was better than others to include nature and non humans. Many had council with the clan, in a circle, sometimes by fire pit, we shared meals, or tobacco, some alcohol has been found, and even hallucinogens. It was a welcomed event aimed at removing anger and grievances by unity. "We ALL want to speak and help you". Having said that, this is why this term is accepted as a large whole by our people. Just because we all don't feel the same way, and don't believe in some concepts doesn't mean we can't support that concept as long as it does no real harm. Who cares? No one... "American indians are told that we can be whatever we want to be in America, besides to be an American indian" This is a concept we should be supporting in the entire world. My sister clans need you. Our ancestors lived in a different world and society than we have today. Our healing paths for all whom live on turtle Island now needs to begin. Both sides need this. At only a bit over 1% of the US population represent us. If the world does not see us, does not know us, does not respect us than we will only become black letters in a book. Not humans. For us whom are younger and left our rez all we see is decay. When you see it with your own eyes, you realize that we need your help. Americans will have to become our keepers, and we need it to be kept in our own words. Not legends, but history.

We always knew but the stories of the victims were ignored. Same goes for two spirit people. My grandmother was a Blackfoot Native American and my Wife is a decedent of the Powhatan, I can't find anywhere in our history where this "two Spirit" was something that was accepted as the norm.
So you guys are saying that there’s a specific “gender” that only Natives can have? Even though you will admit it is the exact same thing as “non binary” in western culture? Which also means absolutely nothing? Doesn’t EVERYONE have a masculine and feminine part of them? If you want to abolish gender norms why are you attributing them to yourself? Why not just be yourself and not label yourself based on society’s standards for people? So many questions.

also side note, no you shouldn't use the term two-spirit if you're not native. while you may identify with its fluidity and theory, it has specific cultural ties that literally do not count if you're not apart of the culture. not even people who have direct indigenous ancestry can always claim to be native because it's so much more than a title it is a lifestyle, it is upholding traditions, it is recounting stories, and it is connecting to your people

Like even in doctors offices they ask you tell them your ethnicities and they check a box that says Caucasian or white, which I find very rude. Sorry I wrote so much.
Same here, actually. A lot of people see me as just "white" which sucks
So, what sources are there that two sprits were held in high regard and performed special roles. I have seen this claim but never found any records
There aren’t any
Records regarding native societal roles are typically written by settlers and are inaccurate.
Your scarf? Is absolutely beautiful. Is it traditional indigenous garb?
No it's a contemporary Native fashion accessory done by the designer Bethany Yellowtail, if I'm not mistaken.
Who cares? No one...
"American indians are told that we can be whatever we want to be in America, besides to be an American indian"
This is a concept we should be supporting in the entire world.

Which also means absolutely nothing? Doesn’t EVERYONE have a masculine and feminine part of them? If you want to abolish gender norms why are you attributing them to yourself? Why not just be yourself and not label yourself based on society’s standards for people? So many questions.
Can we go back to a time where we respected and coexisted with spirits and nature? Please? ;-;
No. We most go back to Victorian england.
I like modern medicine personally.
I'm only here because I'm doing a questionnaire and it was asked. I didn't know what it meant. Thanks for clearing it up!
It was interesting when they listed feminine masculine, masculine masculine, feminine feminine and masculine feminine. Made me wonder where I’d fit in.
I hate this generation man.
Whenever I get asked what is Two-Spirit, I always direct them to this video, it does a great job of explaining it. Thank you!!!!
