The stat you mention about sleep deprivation being equivalent to being drunk for driving is really upsetting. I spent YEARS getting max 6 hours of sleep per night (because babies) and still had to drive to work every day and be productive in a demanding job. It wasn't just stressful for me personally, I feel like I wasn't safe behind the wheel. Didn't have a choice though - not just the need to work, but the lack of public transportation options that force most people in the U.S. to drive all the time.

If you ever wonder why parents of young kids are highly strung and can't remember anything, this is why. We don't have the luxury to follow our own seasonality and getting decent sleep is unachievable. We therefore become burnt out and frankly, crazy....

💯Thus is so true. And later its elder care. I told one of my coworkers that when I get a break from work it is only to deal with eldercare/estate stuff. Not surprisingly I am completely burned out.

And a long, sustained break is pretty much impossible, and frankly considered taboo

Maybe it's because capitalism extracts more from us than is humane to ask.

Good advice - great reminder that I am still on the academic cycle even as a retired teacher as I write and illustrate a book.

Such a smart video. I'm so visual and really enjoyed all the graphics. I "think" like this.

Don't know why but I started crying at the end. Having spent 6 weeks in hospital because of burnout last year and feeling like I'm on the same road again, this visualization was something that made it click for the first time. Ever since I started uni it's been "summer" the whole time and I need to change that. Thank you for this video and the important messages it contains! 🫶🏻

Simple but clear comparison between a year and a productivity cycle. I'll have to look at this a bit more.

I work in a public school as a support professional so my initial thought was that I’d follow a similar cycle as you, but actually I think summer stretches out too much without things to do and work on (since I don’t usually work during this period or only do some half days at camp for a few weeks). Jan/Feb is always the craziest time for me since part of my role is filling in as a sub as needed and it is needed as that is when all the crud is flying around and there are never enough subs to cover it all. I really think that is my best time for rest when it comes to personal projects/side hustles, because I’m just too shattered from the day.

For monthly cycles, can use the 4 phases of the menstrual cycle (follicular, ovulation, luteul and menstruation) or the moon phases (new, waxing, full, waning) to figure out best energy times for doing vs. resting.

Tracking my cycle (like actually paying attention to my moods and energy levels, beyond just knowing the dates I should start switching out my underwear) was such a major gamechanger for me. My cycle also just so happens to line up with the beginning of the month being my highest energy and end of month being lowest energy, so it really works out for planning at the start vs reflecting at the end!

I haven't been in school in decades but I maintain the actual new year is the end of August, when school begins. Even if you don't have kids, so many other industries are affected by the usual school schedule. January 1 is just wannabe new year; it happens in the middle of the real cycle of society.

I'm in a weird phase of life. I feel like I've been going back and forth between spring and summer. I'm starting a new job, so I don't know how to break out of this.
