- Today I'm sharing my real budget percentages from 1st quarter. Have you heard of the 50/30/20 rule when it comes to budgeting? In this video, I will show how my numbers compare and what my strategy is when it comes budgeting. Create your best budget this quarter by planning ahead and focusing your budget where it matters the most.

Thank you K .. I can’t thank you enough.. you have given me the strength to save up without shame and now I am able to get my foot in the door in this crazy house market in DMV area .. which was just a dream all this year but now reality and all thanks to your constant talk of being smart frugal.. I did 80% of what u have been preaching :) I am now starting new home and will have to crunch more n budget 😊 ..
I AM SO SO SO SO PROUD OF YOU!!!!! You just made my day!!!!! Congratulations!!! This is AMAAZING!
How exciting! Congratulations
@@LorettaNance thank you 😊
@@KateKaden thank you 😊
You said in your video that you paid off your car loan. I wanted to share with you that my husband and I paid off his car today!!! I could not have done it without you being a constant cheerleader, Kate. I love to hear you say “Happy Frugal Friday”! We have a little less than $5,000 in consumer debt, and by the end of July, we will be consumer debt free!!! Then, we will focus on the mortgage, so it is paid off when we retire. Thanks so much for your weekly videos! They keep me on track! I am very sorry about your cat. Have a great weekend in your beautiful state, which we visited las summer.
Congratulations!!
Congrats! 🎉
Congratulations 🎉
Budget Time! I am ready for the next 12 weeks! Paying off that cc!
Congratulations 🎉
Budget time! Love the quarter concept. My beloved husband died in March after a brief illness and I have been dealing with grief, bills and taking over our finances.
The last time I did this was before online banking and he liked doing that so he took on the job. It’s a learning curve but it helps me focus on the future.
I’m 68, I have MS and I want to be there for my family, so I have to make good decisions where to spend and save.
My goals this quarter are to pay off the car loan and be debt free and to get back into my physio exercises to regain lost ground (- the stress last quarter set me back with the MS).
Take care its a lot all at ones. Walked the same path last year, have chronic illness too. Be easy on yourself, find time to rest and grieve. I am proud of you for setting those goals. You can do it i am sure. 🙌 K squad is on your side
We are here with you!!!
Inspiring 💕 sounds like you are living an abundant life with contentment Kate! Focused on what really matters 🌷🌱🌻. Thank you Kate 🙏🇨🇦.
Hi Kate 👋 from Adelaide 🇦🇺 Australia! Thank you so much for sharing your percentages & I don't think any of your followers would criticise u for being real & honest!
I don't know my %'s as I have it all written out in a paper book along with tracking every dollar I spend. I did no spend January & I'm still on it 😂
Planning a break in June as so many birthdays. My "fun category" is also very low as I'm on disability, so a fixed low income and it's more "fun to me" to know I have savings for whatever the future may bring. 💜
Thank you so much! So happy to see you today!!!!
Great job Kate. My budget is 67% investments, 26% household, and 7% fun! My goal is FI in 2029 so that’s why it is what it is!
SOOOO AWESOME!!!!!!!
Fantastic video!! Appreciate your vulnerability!!!❤
Thanks so much and thank for being with us LIVE today!!!!
I would just like to remind people who are struggling that when it comes to "giving," you shouldn't feel guilty if you can't. Sometimes keeping yourself financially safe is the best "gift" you can give others.
Giving doesn't have to be financially. The giving of your time is great, too. Networking has great benefits.
Budget time! Feb and March were crazy spending months. I have some goals and I am ready for the 12 week year. Hugs to Kaden.
Thank you Sue!!!!!
I have been doing a low spend first quarter. Inspired to do a no spend 2nd quarter.
YESSS Loretta!!!!!
So excited for this 12 week year!!!!! Working out budget and goals this weekend. Here I come April. Going to try a no spend month, and stick to it this time
Kate, first let me say, I'm so sorry to hear of Mr. Hanem's(Spelling?)passing. sendings hugs. And secondly, thank you for talking about the extra paycheck. I try to explain this to people all the time because I always use this practice. I was able to pay an extra $650 on my car payment because of it! Maybe a future video on it?
WAY TO GO STEPHANIE! That extra paycheck is GOLD!!!!!! and good idea!
You are wonderful. Thank you for keeping things real. It really helps me get my head around my own budgeting work. I’m new to all this.
You are very welcome and I'm so glad you're here!
Hi Kate 👋 from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺 (It’s great to see some fellow Aussies commenting here).
I’m a newbie to budgeting and I’m loving your channel!
I’m so glad you are here!!! Welcome welcome!
Another great channel is Frugal Queen in France!
Perfect timing! Just love a new Quarter. Excited to make plans. Even a tiny step is progress. I watch every line in my paper statements, alert for trends or changes or danger signals. Ever vigilant. Little improvements, bit by bit, habit by habit, taking action, always learning, moving forward, with a weekly dose of our wonderful Kate!
I’m actually relieved to throw away the past 12 weeks and start NEW, “refreshed”. Am I succeeding? Yeah. But I’m also experiencing burnout. Tired of being “broke”: work/home/feed the animals/let dogs in and out. My drive/work time is 4 am to 4 pm; time I’m up, drive, work, drive home, back in the door. I have no extra time to work a side hustle, workout, a second job. I’m exhausted. While it sounds like I’m complaining-I am not. I just can’t find the secret past this vicious circle. Every year the exact same. Any video to be made on this? Add single (or when in a dead/roommate situation and not on the same page financially) it’s a real challenge. No slam on exes. But does anyone get me?
YESSSSSSS!!! TOTALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes! It's a grind for sure, but u will find a happier groove. I start my day with prayer & gratitude. 💜
Little things add up, no coffee out, pack your own lunch, don't buy new clothes, take out, extras. Maybe you already do this but that's how I find more money.
First time I did percentages, interesting. Giving 7.8. IRA/savings 7.93 Life 79.07. Spending/fun 3.9
Thank you so much for sharing! It’s interesting to look into it, right?
Because I have a “fixed income aka social security”. I know in advance what I have to work with. In Dec I set my budget for the next year. I print out my categories on paper and fill in the amounts. I set my “bill book “ quarterly and if need be I can adjust numbers as I get to each month. I don’t understand how some people can go through life not knowing what’s coming in and what’s going out. On my income of $1289. a month, budgeting is a must!
Yass🙌❤️
I got my budget goals set up- and now i am trying to think how i can make $80 work for a week
You've got this!!!!
Sunday replay 😊 You got me looking at my percentages on Friday 😂 Your retirement... sounds like you've saved $7000 in the first quarter, if I've heard that correctly that's brilliant Kate 👏 Savings pot is that separate or just a different name for your budget buffer? I call it different things sometimes like all the names we call our cats 😹 January RUclips highest & 3rd extra paycheck 👏😎 Do you have your own percentages you're aiming for? I recall you saying before that you didn't reaIly focus on percentages. I like hearing your real life progress whilst understanding you sharing at your comfort level 😊 Mr Hanum 😻 This video gave me an idea 😂 You know how you do reading an article for tips, the idea to look at other percentages for tips like Mr Money Moustache, David Bach or others you like!. Active budgeter 🙌
I just snap shot this comment so I can marinate on it! Love it!
Good morning and Happy Friday 😊 😃 😀 Without an alarm set, I slept in and missed your video. It was great and I know what I'll be doing in my few hours off from my regular job. Thanks so much for the reminder to re-evaluate the budget and spending!!!!
YASSSS! Hi K.K! We missed you! So happy to see you now! HAPPY FRUGAL FRIDAY!
Rewatching the video again, and YES YOU ARE FUN😂😂😂😂😂
Great job. That’s awesome about your January. Our RUclips revenue has been up a little bit too. 😉. Our last magic month was November so we won’t get another one until May. lol
🙏❤️I love a magic month 🪄 🥰🙏
Agree on the saving pot !! We did make a separate pot at the bank for sons college it’s almost over 🎉lol.
Happy Frugal Friday, KSquad! I am super excited for the new quarter. We have been over budget the last 2 months. It’s so frustrating. I can’t seem to get the bleeding to stop. Everything broke, got sick or needed replacing. Ugh!
Turning the page and hoping for better results!!!
Happy Easter and may God Bless you all! 🙏❤️
YASSSS!!!!!!! You've got this! Happy Easter Connie!!!!!!
Happy, frugal Friday, Kate! Awesome breakdown of your budgeting! It’s inspiring, you gave me ideas of what I can do with my own budget! Enjoy the rest of this, Good Friday! And have an awesome Easter! :-) 💥 BOOM!
YAY!!!!!! Perfect. Thanks so much! Have an awesome EASTER! BOOM!
Im working on getting down to 2 Suitcases like youtuber Timothy War and finding I need to buy a lot less than I thought
BUDGET TIME!! I retired last Monday. My husband is still working. We sat down to do 50/30/20. It worked well on paper🎉
Im sorry about your sweet baby cat❤❤
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR RETIREMENT! How exciting! Thank you so much for your sweet words about my cat. He was amazing.
You are killing it with savings! Woohoo! Your budget works for you - thanks for sharing.
Thank you Donna!!!
Thank you Kate, for sharing your percentages! There is no shame to be had in them! Rockstar!
Thank you so much!🙏❤️
Thanks for sharing, Kate. I watched this video while looking at my April budget and getting things squared away after paying bills this month. I'm around the 30-35% to savings rate too, and adding an extra 1/3 principal payment to our mortgage every month if possible.
🙌🙌🙌
How do you figure the percentages on your budget
My Everydollar app calculates them automatically:) Phew. Helps me a lot. Is that what you mean? How do I get these figures?
Also as far as me deciding what goes where, my household and savings dictates the rest. I make sure the essentials are covered, then saving, then giving, then what's left is lifestyle:)
Something new I’m trying in the new year (next 12 weeks): pay everything bi-weekly. Bills like water/trash that are quarterly: bi-weekly. I’ve cut out all the extras but still struggle. Example: Sirius $8.99/month. Apple Music 19.99/month. Radio is FREE. But my “rich life” (Ramit Sethi) is music and coffee. Ability to instantly listen to any new music without purchase if cd/vinyl. But that’s $360/year. And I honestly cannot afford it. At $25/hour pay-I can’t afford it? I’m sucking at this budgeting.
Ooooh GERT! HI FRIEND! Always thrilled to see you! Loving this!
U don't suck at budgeting! It's a strength u build over time. U being conscious of where u spend & questioning yr lifestyle spending is a great indicator that u actually are a good budgeter!!! Rarely does anyone get it right the first time & your figures will change as u learn. Be encouraged & keep trying. Blessings from Australia 🇦🇺 💜
Lots of insightful information Kate! You gave me some inspiration on budgeting ideas. Love the term you used to describe towards end of video “active budgeting”, that will be my goal and focus for the second quarter. Thank you!
Budget time!
I really need to reign in my giving - I tend to want to give more in the way of auctions and FB groups 😞 I love being able to give, but when I don't have the money, it really doesn't help me at all. I have been watching your playlists and getting a little additional inspiration.
I am in for the next 12-week year - so excited!!
Let's do this!
Budget revision time. My husband is on medical leave and his paycheque is about to drop to 60% of normal. I am absolutely stressed out but your 4 zones make so much sense. I’m going to use those! ❤
Hello from Brisbane, Australia.
Hello! Happy Frugal Friday!
Hi Bob 👋 from Adelaide 😂
Kaden and Kate ❤❤❤😮😮😮😊😊😊
So sorry to hear about Mr. Hanem, Kate. Best wishes to your family in this difficult time. Thanks for all you do!
Budget time!! Setting up my budget for April (with a long glance at the quarter as a whole). Joined the book club and started to read the book. I am keeping my goals simple (2 financial and 1 health). I tried a couple of the budget apps but none fit me and how I budget so I use an excel sheet (I’m old school 👵). I do have a sinking fund that I start at the beginning of each year. I have a detailed list of all items, dates and amounts listed for the sinking fund but keep all funds in one separate account. I also have an account for my variable expenses, such as food, non-food household items (toilet paper, laundry soap, etc.) and this account also includes funds for dining out or events. All my regular fixed bills are all held in the main account.
Thank you very much!! A lot of useful info!!
Budget time 🎉
Thank you for sharing Kate. You are my absolutely favorite RUclips channel.
Amy, that means the world to me! Thanks so much!!!!!! Happy Frugal Friday!
I love EveryDollar!! I write down my budget for each paycheck and track in everydollar.
LOVE IT!!!!!
We just got an extra paycheck in March. Dh & I are on the same pay weeks so it’s always like a “bonus.”
Yass❤️
December was my biggest month ever. No spend Jan was a cinch, even though I gave every extra penny to my mom.
🙌😁yasss!
Budget time! It’s time for me to get back into this! Just curious, do you use the free version of Dave Ramsey Every Dollar or the paid version?
I use the FREE version! WOOT WOOT!
Thank you so much for all the budgeting help. I’ll definitely be doing the 12 week year!
My April budget is DONE!!!😊
Does your “savings pot” also include your emergency fund?
Okay so YES it is. HOWEVER, I know how much is allotted for my emergency fund, so that is NEVER touched. Like I don't dig deeper beyond that number because that ER is untouchable. So say for example, if my emergency fund was $10,000. I could have $15,000 in my "savings pot" so this means I have $5000 to work with to pull from. $10,000 is always there, never dipping below. I know not everyone does it this way, but this is currently what I'm doing.
I am sorry to hear about your cat. I started crying. Big hugs to you and Kaden. I have been watching for a long time.
Thank you so so much Penni.
UGH. The worst feeling.
I appreciate you!
Budget son's 18th Birthday. High school graduation, weekend get away. Father's day and Mother's day. Whew it's going to be a lot.
Yes indeed! But some good celebrations! WOOOHOOO!
Also if you played the 31 Day declutter game where ypu get rid of the number of items based on the number date, was it hard after 18 for you guys as well.
