Your channel does the most practical and easiest prepping minus the fear mongering. Thank you.
Hi Lady Rockstar.
Another great video. This is what we want and need, Jinnie... Practical Prepping.
Leave the hysterical doom mongering to others.
Help us to learn what we need to do.
Your the best.
Loves.
I too store cereal, but in Mylar bags and then slip the bag back into the cereal box itself. Works out perfectly!
Thank you again J. I took my vacuum sealer over to a friend's house to see if she could or would use it. She raised her power chair up to the kitchen counter and was able to use it by herself. We vacuum sealed beans and lentils. She went right on amazon and ordered a full system. God bless you and yours.
Thank you. I love that your videos are short and that your upbeat personality shows through. We all need as much positive as we can get in these trying times. God bless!
I never thought of adding the second seal - what a great idea.
Thanks for the demo , i did not know you can leave the cereal in the bag it came in and vacuum seal over it , good to know , thanks Jinne , stay safe , till next time
I really needed this reminder to buy up much more food, but also to get it protected. Being able to sprout and plant may be essential as supplies get used. Sprouting and microgreens can be grown indoors when being visible isn't advisable with our food.
Yesterday I was working on some gardening and I went to one of our larger sheds to look for something. I moved some stuff around and saw 2 boxes. Wondering what was in them I opened them to find 19 half gallon ball canning jars. My husband told me I'd used all I had and must have put these boxes in here and forgot about them. I was very happy with my find. I'm cleaning them up and storing my gluten free grains in them. I used oxygen absorbers in the jars even though I have the vacuum sealer for jars.
What is a vacuum sealer for jars? I just found this site & Im new to this.
Hello J. I'm a single senior living in a hi-rise apartment in Chicago. I vacuum seal portions how I cook. I put 1 cup of beans and rice in the brown paper bags. I don't waste the whole bags for only a cup of food. I cut them off and make 2 bags by folding and tapeing the bottom of the open edges. I do double seal all of my bags, thanks to you. I then put 3 paper bags in the vacuum bags and seal them.
Hi! I really like your lessons. No bull, straight forward, this is what you do. I have been doing this since the first vacuum sealer came out. I am sure everyone on your channel like the straight forward information. The only thing I would so diffrent is I vacuum seal the oxygen packets jar. You are spot on, keep up the great work.
Thanks for the reminder, I need to spend a couple of hours vacuum sealing one day soon. So much to do this time of year that it’s easy to get behind on things like this! I haven’t vacuum sealed cereal before, any guess how long it will last? I’m sure it varies as there are so many cereals, just looking for a ball park time frame. Thanks for all you do for us!💕
Me too, I’ll do it early morning before daylight or it just gets to dang hot, in the 90’s by 10 AM
Very informative video! Thank you so much for sharing our vacuum sealer bags, mylar bags and oxygen absorbers with your viewers! It's so important to have a stocked pantry.
We’ve been using the Food Saver vacuum sealer for years. It is excellent for frozen product as well as dry storage. Air is the enemy when it comes to food storage. We also use it vacuum seal the Ball Jars with the attachment. I am going to buy another and put it back for when this one finally goes. Thanks Ginny, for the demo on the vacuum sealer. Many great ways to store food for long term.
What model is this. I have. attachment. But not work on my new vacuum sealer. Great tool. I learn a lot awesome. Still learning.
Get a hand break bleeder also in case electric is out
@@vickiegraham4765…The model we have is about 15 years old. The attachment came with it. Probably if you go on line to Food Saver they can direct you better than I can. I have multiple jars in various sizes vacuum stored. They are all wide mouth jars.
@@maryarcher8484…Yep. The manual brake bleeder works just as well. I saw this demonstrated on another Prepper channel several months ago and have tried it out. It works perfectly. I got mine at Harbor Freight. I am sure any of the auto supply retail stores carry it as well. Great contingency plan in case there is no electric. Well worth the money.
Funny because I just did the same thing and bought another set of jar sealers as backup.
Thank you for demonstrating vacuum sealing grains & cereals for long term food storage, Jinne! I find your videos so informative and helpful. Have a great night!
I swear I gut giggle when you laugh! Love it so much! I’m from the south so love the accent, too. Thanks for all you do. 💗 from Texas. 🇺🇸
Great video! We all need to learn how to store our food. Things are only going to get worse.🙁
My Foodsaver's been working overtime lately too, I just had to bulk order some new bag rolls, I don't want to run out.
Love Green Lentil Sprouts, I've got it down to 4 days growth now, it is about 6-7 days in the Winter for me.
TFS HC, & take care too everyone. ❤🙂🐶
Please do a video(s) on sprouting and planting! Had no idea about thst.
Excellent info on sprouting the lentils. I've been prepping for years and never thought of that. ty
Thank you again, I always smile when I see another video of yours is ready to watch. :)
Nicely done, I’m encouraged by this video for sure and will do the same!🥰
Jinnie- I’d really appreciate it if you would do a video of how to make granola and cereal bars. That would be great.Every once in a while my roommate hits the food pantry and I’ve discovered I love dates( high in potassium, anti-inflammatory & many other benefits) and I’ve got a bag of hazelnuts already shelled. Have walnuts, raisins, original dried cranberries & some flavored, walnuts, chia seeds, flax meal & plenty of oatmeal!
Great video! A vacuum sealer is a definite must have in the kitchen. I have been telling a friend he needed one. He never bought one for himself, finally I bought him one along with bags as a gift. He loves it and says he's having fun with it. Keep stocking and stacking, Folk's. It's going to get rough 😕.
I spout lentils for my chickens they love them, also you can eat the greens in salads. So emergency food for you & animals. I vac seal everything love it.I keep in packaging and just cut a corner off that way I have instructions on food.
Thank you! The CVS near us is closing so I've been buying things that are 75 %off (cereals, soups, Almonds, etc) and wondering how I was going to store them for long term. I just saw this video and ordered a vacuum sealer and bags (first time). You're awesome!
Nuts are not meant for long term storage as they can go rancid. Best to vacuum deal and place in freezer for up to 1 year max.
I cut a small slit in my rice and beans bags and then put them in a vacuum sealer bag. That way, I have all of the cooking instructions and nutritional info. I was wondering, though, if I should take them out their original bags or if the food would be OK.
Doesn't matter whether you leave them in the original bag or not. It's fine.
Thank you SO MUCH for showing me how to vaccum seal without crushing things! I sealed a Knorrs noodle once and I heard it breaking the noodles even after the sealing was finished. I had no idea how to do cereal other than in jars (which I am now out of)
Great information, thank you for sharing. It's much appreciated.
Good comment on sprouting seeds, I grew chickpeas under my heat lamps in the depth of winter in Scotland 🏴 and the fresh greens were amazing, delicious pea taste to enjoy while the world was frozen outside ❤
I just found your site & I love your videos!
The other day I found a video where a lady used multiple sized glass jars from salsa, spaghetti sauce etc.. to put oats, noodles in, then placed the jar into a canister to vacuum seal the jars. Have you ever done that & if so, what type canister vacuum sealer did you use. I’m having a problem finding one with good reviews.
Ooops! It was you, lol so I just saw the brand of canister you use, so never mind! Thank you for these videos!
Great Lessons. Do more please. Every little. detail helps. For. Us to. Learn. . Most important. We all
New to this. We need you you are awesome. Hugs thank you
Thanks for the advice.
Great video, thanks. Questions:
No oxygen absorbers in the cereals?
How long do you think things like Rice Crispies and Corn Flakes will be ok?
"Oatmeal" or "Oats", is there a difference?
I’ve always double seal my vac bags, especially for meats!
Great advice on not heating your ‘seed’ type items to keep them viable for sprouting.
I’ve always liked sealing my cereals in mason jars so it won’t crush, my OLD vac sealer won’t stop n seal on bags.
I’ve found vac bags at the places that cater to big game hunters that are compatible with Foodsaver machines, the bags are textured in the same way and are less $.
Using O2 absorbers is the easiest way to go, imo. No worries about whether or not they're *fully* dry, which always freaked me out a little. 🙃
I love these food storage videos. I used your brown paper bag method this morning and put up lots of flour and cornmeal in my vacuum sealer. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with us newbies! Blessings, Helen
Many channels use brown paper lunch sacks to store flour, noodles, etc. Not just this one.
I like your channel you speak truth are practical and don’t go long you give good tips and don’t presume anything. I don’t feel stressed after I listen I feel blessed
I love my vacuum sealer I don't know why I hadn't ever had one before
Another great video. Thanks. I have used my Food Saver (on my 4th one) for many things, even used it for underwear and socks for my Go Bag. Also take the core out of TP, seal it and it is small for my Go Bag. When I traveled for years, kept my earrings, etc. in Food Saver bags. My last unit is pretty new, and I think I may try done mylar bag and see if it seals.
There is so many trying to get on utube, they give such horrible advice! Thanks for pointing everyone in the right direction ❤️ 🇺🇸
If they’ve been removed of all air, bugs can’t survive. At least that’s what I’ve heard.
That's right. Bugs can't live without oxygen.
Hi Cindy.
But the adults lay eggs, which hatch when oxygen is restored to the environment (ie, you open the bag).
The larvae feed on the food, grow into adults and lay the next cycle of eggs.
Freezing kills the adults, defrosting hatches the larvae, refreezing kills the larvae.
Hope this helps.
I already seen this video but came back to order the 150 food vac bags. But while in here I watched you again. Your Great. Thank You. 🌹🌿🏵😄
I find the foodsaver doesn't really seal mylar easy so use an impulse sealer. Really fast
.
Great video and tutorial. So important for us to be putting up as much food as we can. I thought popcorn had too much moisture in it to use an oxygen absorber? (Anything that might still have 10% moisture in it.) Popcorn pops bc it has moisture in it 😉
Popcorn will last for years and years without the oxy absorber.
Great idea on second seal
Like the idea about sealing cereal will do next time very helpful save my jars 😊
Thanks 4 sharing! I didn't realize that U could stop the vacuum part 2 seal quickly! 😬
I have 4 bags of vacuumed sealed cereal that might b pretty crushed! 😬😬😬. Oh well, learn something Every day! Blessings! 💞
I love the double seal trick!!
Greetings from the land of ice and snow 😎☕️🥶 excellent pantry hack!
And put bay leaves in side tote lunch bags coffee jug and in jars that had pasta and my oats
Good Thursday morning Jeni! Good information 👍! I didn't know some of this. You have a blessed day. LUCRETIA
Unrelated but ivermectin is restricted to 2 tubes now in Salem Oregon. It's a horse wormer. Not good since we have 4 1/2 horses.
Sadly we're going to see more of this in the coming months. 😪
Jeffers has ivermectin available for purchase online. Free shipping on orders over $50 for many things, but they do charge freight for gallons & heavier packagesof supplements, etc.. They carry a wide variety of pet, livestock and equine supplies. They are worth checking out. Also check online places like Valley Vet Supply.
I ordered mine from Valley Bet online.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
no one taught me how to vacuum seal my corn flakes or rice krispies, but that is how I did mine and I have soft mode so that it does not crush my cereals
Hi Jinne!
I have an older food saver vacuum sealer. I wonder if I could vacuum seal Mylar. I hesitate because I don't want to ruin it. Thank you for showing the way.
I vacuum seal Mylar … you just need to know the ‘trick’. 😉
I'll have to try vacuum sealing cereal. If I crush it I can use it to bread chicken for baking.
Thank you so much for sharing.
Great job . GODBLESS sweetie
Good informational video , thanks for sharing , God bless !
This video was a great tutorial. Thank you🪴
Thanks for all of your helpful tips!
I love the second seal idea thank you!!
Good video I put my Cheerios vacuum-sealed in jars popcorn still in bag put in coffee jug. Oats in vacum sealed jars pasta in lunch bags like i seen in your one of your viedos put tote in closet so its full everything else are in jars thats the only way im able to do watch most of your shows to make sure its done right and iv have ask questions and got answers from other people snd u not able to get mylar bags and 02 aborsers keep up the helpful shows have a bless day 😊
Thumbs up! 👍
Great video, I see you date your bags but you don't say how long they can last for? Thanks Terry
Hello Jenny💕
Hi Linda 💕🇺🇸
You also can’t grow them if they cross a US boarder. If they are imported for growing they go through a different customs check, but food and fruit are treated with some process that kills the grow ability.
How do you decide which foods you want to put in a Mylar bag with an oxygen absorber?
can you vacuum seal them first and then freeze them? for a day or two and let them thaw. It seams like it would not be able to condense moisture from the environment.
Wouldn’t an airtight bad kill any bugs?
Why don't you use the vaccuum seal baggies for the beans? I think they are cheaper than mylar bags too.
Thanks!
Thanks so much for this video and God bless you.
Jinny , my boxed cereal I put in Mylar bags so that it doesn’t cinch up.
Thank you. ❤️
Im curious why you dont put them in paper lunch bags to keep them in the dark?
I see your point. However, if you store the vac sealed food in a dark container, in a cool dry place, there wouldn’t be any immediate need to use the lunch bag. The lunch bag addition does serve a purpose, though.
You are so good. Enjoy and learn from your tips. Didn't even think about sprouting beans and lentils . Looked into azure after seeing your azure haul the other day but our drop off is about hr. + Away. We're really trying to watch our driving. so that's not too good for us. Keep the videos coming
Great tips! New Subscriber!
I seal the absorber plastic bag
I’ve had a hard time with my beans unsealing. I’m going to do a second seal too.
Hi Jinne 👋
Hi Maria 👋
I always add a second seal as well! I haven't been freezing mine. Hoping I won't regret that! :(
@E Kk I've check a few of my things and have seen NO problems. I don't have the freezer space to freeze first. I do putin Oxygen absorbers and or silica packs and I also use diatomaceous earth.
I do not understand why you have to use the Mylar bags and O2 absorbers if you vacuum seal and place buckets.. any ideas about this?
Write the kg price in the bag and if the current price is below that you could consume the bag and buy more to store
O2 absorbers would make your food last so much longer. Amazon has them
I'm so paranoid after getting moths that I freeze and use bay leaves. Other things I vacuum seal in jars. All it takes is once lol. I honestly didn't know that bugs could be in rice until it was too late. In clearing out the kitchen pantry where they were, we learned cardboard will not keep them out. Most things we tossed and made the mistake of opening a cardboard can of panko and it was full of webs & moths came flying out. Every remedy I ever heard of was brought to bear lol
Yes, once you get pantry moths, it’s so difficult to rid of them.
Glad you did!
Me too I lost just a small amount of food to them about $20.00 I've started keeping my stuff in plastic crates except canned goods and I don't keep all of my flours and rice together anymore that way if one crate gets moths the others might not. Also been freezing what I can for 3 days too.
@@janet5073 Y'all are scaring me now. LOL I have a few canisters of those bread crumbs too. How much past the date were they. I guess I'll go empty them into jars. Was the packaging okay? Or had it been compromised somehow??
for how long would it remain preserved in vacuum seal without using oxygen absorber?
I think I know the answer is no already but I'm interested in vaccume sealing toasted museli. Due to it having nuts & fruit I probably WONT vaccume seal it but if anyone can confirm this I'd appreciate it!
Thankyou 💜👍
Do I need to put my oats in freezer first??? Help I not sure what to put in freezer first before vac. Sealing
Why do you use the oxygen absorber and not vacuum out the air on the lentils and popcorn? Newbie here, trying to learn all I can. Love your channel!
You can do it either way. I am finding that the new vacuum seal bags are not holding their seal as long as they used to.
@@HomesteadCorner would you ever use both the vacuum and the oxygen absorber or is that overkill?
What brand is your vacuum sealer. I like the lock and push button. I have two you have to lay on to work. Hate them
I just got this one, it's a Nesco, works great so far!
If you are removing the oxygen, how are insects able to live? Shouldn't have to freeze things.
Hi Jay.
It isn't the adult insects that survive...it's the eggs they lay.
The eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the food and become adults infesting your food.
Freezing kills the adults, defrosting causes the eggs to hatch, and re-freezing kills the larvae, thus preventing them from laying the next cycle of eggs.
Hope this helps.
What kind of vacuum sealer do you have
I adore your videos and channel. Please forgive me for not knowing/remembering (it's real late and I have a the beginning of a migraine), but do you have a way you can be reached for private questions?
What do you consider long term storage? A year, three years? I need to know it is worth it.
can or should I add oxygen pac?
Do you have recipes for the oatmeal on how you use it
Since you didn't suck out all the air in the cereal should you have put an O2 absorber in with the bag?
Great question. We are still researching for our use on this one.. I think it depends on what kind of cereal it is. Things too moist and with oils or sugars in them can go bad with oxygen absorbers in them... Nuts, for example... I've heard (need to vet the info) that it can cause botulism in food if the moisture and oil contents are too high. Vacuum sealing is apparently not an issue for nuts and cookies and such... but you wouldn't want to put them in mylar.
Coffee - roasted - releases gases and is stored in mylar with a release for the gasses to exit and can be vacuum sealed.
newbie question here: Why did you use mylar bags and oxygen absorbers for your beans and popcorn instead of just sealing it?
You can do either, I usually mix it up depending on what I have for storage space. 💕🇺🇸
What do you put your bags in once you’ve sealed them?
