    There is nothing like viewing a video that talks about products that last more than 30 years in which some items are giving storage expectancy in vague terms like forever or a long time while interspersed with items that will last two to three years. This keeps me on an eternal quest for concrete longevity expectations.

    Back in the 90s and early 00's, my aunt received USDA government commodities that were distributed to the low income and elderly people. She used to send me bags and bags of powered eggs and powered milk. I used the powered milk a LOT in baking and cooking to add extra protein and calcium to feed my brood of active children. I also used it to make chocolate milk and I also made a grape drink with it and made milk for my children to put on their cold cereal because they just never drank the milk from the cereal and didn't want to waste fresh milk that did cost money.
    The powered eggs came in handy for baking and when we went camping. Also used them for feeding the babies when they were learning to feed themselves and more ended up in their hair and on the floor than made it into their bellies, lol.
    I often saved the powered cheese out of the boxed mac and cheese because I would always used real cheese instead. It was great in omelettes.
    And BTW garlic IS a miracle drug! It is anti fungal, antiseptic, antiparasitical, and is great for your immune system and cardiovascular health.

But they would eat yougurt I made with it (I forgotten that was another use I had for it...I also used it to feed my tomato and pepper plants as well, lol) But they had to use the milk from powdered milk on their cold cereal )which they didn't get often cuz couldn't afford it) because they wouldnt drink the milk after cereal was gone anyway. I think the chocolate flavor help disguise the taste/smell of the powered milk. Cuz the powdered milk I was getting really DID have kinda distinctive smell to it.

    Okay, Good on most all of these, BUT, I have to disagree with the pancake mix. It’s better to keep the ingredients separate for pancakes. Mixing ingredients together will lessen the shelf life and can become toxic, Remember back about 15 years ago? The people who were getting sick from pancake mix? The ingredients had sit together for too long and turned toxic. So nope, keep those ingredients separate!

    • @carolt392
      @carolt392 3 месяца назад +4

      That event actually had to do with packaging/storage and not the ingredients being mixed together... it had to do with expired mix in poor packaging that developed mold spores and made people very ill. Stored in proper packaging to keep out moisture, light, and pests, mixes are perfectly safe to keep. To keep dry mixes long term safely - repackage the mix into a glass mason jar and vacuum seal, or place in a mylar bag with an oxygen absorber. If you go the route of using mylar, you just have to put the mylar bags in some kind of thick storage container with a tight lid to keep rodents away - mice WILL eat through mylar!

You can get free shipping item if you subscribe to monthly shipments. There are sales all the time, plus you can get money off some discounted items due to being overstocked. I have recently found that some items are cheaper in the #10 cans. For instance the diced beef is twice the price in the #10 can but you get three times the food. Same with the potatoes, spinach, broccoli, carrots. Other items not so much. Sadly the chicken isn't. Jeff, you made me laugh tonight so thank you for that. Clickbait. There were not even 10 that last "forever". But otherwise some good tips.
    I live in SoCal, near the foothills. In the summer my room reaches 90+ degrees without air cond, and in the winter it gets as cold as whatever without the heater. What I have learned is that it's not smart to depend on the longevity of any stores. We have mice, rats, squerals, skunks, racoons, and sometimes coyotes and then the birds that ravage our garden. The way to go is to rotate whatever you store. Nothing worse than checking on cans that have rusted through, or containers chewed through by rodents, or foods that had worms or insects grow in them. Rotation by regular use is the only real way to go. This way you assure yourself of what you maintain your diet with. Just my experience. I will be working towards these tips though as refreshers though.

I had an invasion of rats this year and not only did they blow through everything that wasn't in glass jars or metal cans/tins, they even ate up my garden seeds and the bag of bone meal I had bought for my plants! I knew a guy that had to throw out a massive amount of his dried goods (like 200 lbs) because of pantry moth infestation. I have learned from my experience with those critters to put things like flour, dried beans, dried fruit and other things they like to get into the freezer overnight before putting them on the shelf AND storing pet food far far away from my pantry and cupboards.
      But you are right Rotation is key!!!

I am working on my DIY hydroponic setup and bought a Sun Joe Tiller/cultivator to help with my veggie garden. I also plan on buying a couple more fruit trees from the Grocery Outlet. That means u need to have some sort of solar power generator and powerbank, so when the grid is down u can rely on solar energy to slowly cook some meals still (provided u prepared the cooking electronics)
      Also prepare things you need to make ur own fire like you will when ur out in the woods (as backup fire making method)
      Also never prep one type of food =all food are dehydrated food that requires cooking etc. But prep some ready to eat meals /food too so when your lazy can just open and eat without cooking
      Solar power items (small ones of course not big like generators) are really portable, good if u need to leave ur house. Even bushcraft items to make fire in the woods those are small and portable.
      Cookware & big electronics are only good when ur hiding or staying at one spot to wait for help
      but u always wan to be prepared to be able to survive outside too at some point cause food and water will eventually run out

      You can buy it from restaurant supply places. The bags make huge batches but you can use enough for one meal and then close up the bags. I bought some in 1999 and it's still good. (A neighbor put together a large food order that many people participated in when the Y2K scare was in full panic. I live in Utah where neighbors tend to be in the same church congregation so almost everyone knows everyone.)
      I think you can also buy it in the bulk section at WinCo grocery stores.

    I would never FD skim milk. It's disgusting. Getting a Harvest Right next month (finally), but as someone who's been stocking milk, and it's WHOLE milk, I could never bring myself to use it for skim. We don't drink or use it in our daily lives, so it's not going in our preps.

    I have to disagree about 'best if used by' expiration dates not being important ; twice now I have bought packaged products that were dry and flavorless because they were days away from expiration - 'buyer beware'. The products were Idahoan instant potatoes, they were terrible, and Knorr butter noodles, I had to throw them away after a few bites. Knorr chicken bouillon cubes are good, I still use those but I regret those purchases of near expired foods.

    spend 10k on a dryer or 10k on dried food...? if we go to war in 2 years i'll have barely prepared enough food while trying to pay for this effing thing and ill be sitting on a dryer with no power, no parts... now i just feel doomed.

    • @sandfly60
      @sandfly60 2 месяца назад +1

      Don't feel doomed. Do what you can and forget about what you can’t. You may be able to start building a community with others that you can swap things with.
      If you have a garden, you can grow some food. If you’re in an apartment, then you can grow things on a balcony or on the windowsill. You can also grow sprouts (broccoli, bean etc) in bottles on the windowsill.
      Buy whatever powdered or other long life foods you can afford.
      And don’t forget spices, because they can make the blandest of things taste a whole lot better, and they last years and years. And don't forget salt and pepper. Hugs!

      The chance of full blown war on U.S. soil is much less likely than needing your food storage for more common disasters like weather events and unemployment. A person just has to be prepared the best he or she can be and to not think in extremes.

      Harvest right has a small freeze dryer for 2600.00 dollars that can process 3000 pounds of food per year ! The largest version costs under 5000.00 and can process up to 10,0000 pounds per year ! The average cost of a meal is pennies compared to the crap from companies that sell for 10.00 plus !

      I've canned water in home canning jars as they're emptied out. It's not the tastiest water but it's water! It was mind blowing that it had to be water bathed for 40 minutes to sterilize it but a person knows it's definitely safe after processing it.
      This is the only time I reuse canning lids. I don't use them for additional batches of food because as far as I'm concerned it's penny-wise and pound-foolish to potentially lose the food and the time involved in canning it just to save a little bit of money on lids.
