i ran a small commercial herb and veg nursery and we found through experience never to hold seedlings by anything other than seed level because invisible damage can be done to the stem We also did not water before transplant because if you just drop clamp of removed seedlings on bench when on the dry side, they separate very easily with no damage to roots and we watered immediately after transplant. I am now retired but must have transplanted in the millions of seedlings by hand and losses were absolutely minimal

What do you mean by holding seedlings at "seed level"?
