- Pricking out and potting on, or transplanting or potting up, whatever you call it. Today we're taking new seedlings and moving them to bigger pots. There's a knack to it, so let me show you how. We're in the greenhouse today to prick out and then pot on all the little pepper and tomato seedlings. So if you are growing for the first time and aren't sure how to get your tiny seedlings from seed trays or modules into their own pots, join us for a beginners guide.

For all the folk asking, the seedlings were moved to larger pots. And then brought back indoors. It's too cold for them to go out into the greenhouse just yet.
I'd definitely recommend catching up with the previous videos if this is new to you. ruclips.net/p/PLjhUBZdMh-4mGEyvLwYGkVBtfsWGykrfy

@@eliandkate Thank you what a lovely welcome yes I've watched your new greenhouse video already ty . I don't have grow lights but have sown onion seeds , Brussels and cabbage in kitchen and this morning they are in the sunny window above radiator and at night I put them in with the boiler. It's very stressful bringing life plant life into the world lol x
It absolutely is, I agree, far too stressful
I hope Penny and Parker got loads of cuddles for their Christmas pressies (dibbers and pricking tools) 😋 Great to know about planting leggy plants deeper in the soil to try and salvage them. Had many of trial and error and loads of leggy plants at times 🙈😁
Oh they did. They are fabulous at choosing presents. Amazing how far their pocket money goes 😀🤣😂😀
@@eliandkate 🙈🤣🤣
Wow, I need my dog to watch this video and get on with the programme! He only got me cuddles for christmas, no cool gardening tools!!
awwwwwwwwwww
You do fair cheer up a dreich Sunday evening :)
Awwwww I'm glad you enjoyed it
Hi Eli and Kate, Great stuff again, sound advice for all new gardeners and some old ones as well, Well you're ahead of me this year with tomatoes because all I have is two Tumbling Toms that I hope to keep in the house well at least one of them, Take care and keep em coming.
but you are way ahead with your peppers - your light box looked green and luscious :D
Great, this shows me exactly what to do, so well explained 😁 I do love your chatty vids. Thank you.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm so glad you enjoy them Fiona 💖💖💖
Wonderfull explanation.... thank you very much .
Greetings from Holland
👍👍👍👍👍
So glad you did this, my peppers are just ready to put into their pots. thankyou so much.
Yay.... What did you sow?
@@eliandkate I've only done peppers so far. This is my first spring with my new Rhino, as it went in too late last year to do much. I'm really looking forward to starting it all and will be avidly watching your videos.
I am certain I shared this with you before but just in case (because I don't want you missing out)

@@eliandkate I've now got eight little pepper plants growing in their pots, I also took 50 cuttings from my overwintered Geraniums yesterday and potted them on as well, my Rhino will take a lot of filling lol.
Eli I can't wait for spring to be outside in the garden 😊🌷
Another great video love the way you explain things to us ❤
Thanks Eli ! xoxo
I know exactly how you feel Lily Rose. I desperately want to be in the garden.
Great to see all the wee seedlings coming on well! 😃 I'm gonna be sowing mine this week so am well excited!
Good luck!
Excellent video with super helpful tips. Thank you
Are you on a back catalogue binge again? 😉
@@eliandkate yes, so much to learn! haha
@chicosgarden 😂😂😂 just don’t over do it
Wow, i'm under a foot of snow, with temperatures next week forecast for -10 up in NE Scotland. And you're potting up your tomatoes. I won't be sowing mine till 1st or 2nd week of March
Oh to be fair Matt, I wouldn't be sowing until end of March in a normal year but these are the ones I sowed indoors in the previous video and have a station set up with lights. I'm determined to get one up on nature this year.
ruclips.net/video/d1EG5CZptW0/видео.html
Lol, I got the same set of tools and they are quite handy!
I use them way more than I thought I would 😂😂😂
I am going to try Sun golds from seed for the first time. It will be fun to compare my experiences with yours. Thank you for thinking to do this!
Ohhhh like a tomato off 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Another great vid thankyou 💚, think we'll sow a few more chillis this afternoon. Im always guilty of being too heavy handed with seedlings 😅, I was taught once to use the cotyledon leaves as mini handle bars when potting on 🛵
Love that!
Helpful as always, thank you! Watched with a cup of coffee after a cold dog walk, thinking about my salvia seedlings and when I might sow my tomatoes (I don't have a grow light, though). :D
I saw your post about your salvias... I'll have to be brave and check on mine for you
@@eliandkate Please do! :)
This is timed to perfection as I have tomato-seedlings that are ready to pot-on...
Thank you for taking the time to share with us your knowledge you are a GOD-send...
What bulbs are you using in your lights...??
Are they proper grow-light-bulbs...??
What wattage are the bulbs you use...??
I'm glad it's useful.
The lights in the house are the sansi grow lights. It's my first year using them, so far so good.
Another awesome video as always :) Really enjoyed thanksgiving you very much!
Only one more month and our Rhino greenhouse will be delivered. Is it March yet?
Soon.... Soon
Loved the video, very informative!
Glad you enjoyed it Sue 🙂
My sweet peppers are only just coming up!
but they are coming up!!!!!!!! Yay for an early start :D
Even with all my new varieties for this year - there will undoubtedly be Sungold 😁👌🏼 curious to see if any of the new ones come close to their high brix 🤷🏻♀️
Let's see how we go 🙂
Another fab video did you take your potted on seeding indoors again ?
Yep, they are all tucked up safe and warm again, and are getting huge!!!!!
So after they've been in propogator, pot on and leave in greenhouse? Following like crazy, live your vids
Oh no, it's far too cold for seedlings out in the greenhouse... these are all warm and safe back under the grow lights in my office 😀
Thought so mine are back in unheated propogator with lights
Hello Eli,I hope you and Kate are both well. Im surprised you got some dry weather .... its just seems to rain here just now but apparently snow is to be here tomorrow .... big kid here! Atb Jim
Oh it was raining, you just can't hear it on the mics :D
Yes my cats buy me presents too 😻
,🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
Hello new subscriber hear 👋🏿 I’m juat wondering if I would be able to grow onions, cucumbers, ginger and kale all at once in the same greenhouse? And I’m thinking of growing mullien would this be possible please? Loveing your channel I’m glad I stumbled across
Hey THEDON_1
theoretically if you had the proper set up, I can't see why you wouldn't be able to grow any of those veggies in your greenhouse. It would just be about making sure you could give each of them what they need. If you check out what temperatures, environment and growing conditions they all need, you should be able to make a plant.
Afraid I don't know mullien so can't really comment - sorry
@@eliandkate thank you
Hi there, just wondering is that an ordinary lamp in your room or a special grow light? Many thanks.
Hey Nuala, that's grow lights bulbs, they have the same fitting as my desk lamp so was cheaper than buying the bulbs and lights.
There's a link in the video descriptions to my gear page if you want to go look at the specs of them to see if it's something you could do.
@@eliandkate thanks so much. Didnt know you could get grow light bulbs and insert into ordinary lamp, brilliant! Thanks 😊
No probs 🙂
Did u put the seedlings back on the heat mat or just under the grow light?
they are back indoors under the grow lights, they don't need the heat mats as the room temperature is perfect for the little plants.
😀
The Kitchen Garden with Eli and Kate great thanks hun
How are you going to protect the seedlings from frost
Ah mrtilly555 .... they are indoors so no worry of frost.
These are the seedlings from the previous video that I have germinated and am bringing on indoors to get the best chance at a longer season. I'm determined to beat Mother Nature this year 😀
ruclips.net/video/d1EG5CZptW0/видео.html
so are they now left out in the greenhouse or if you bring them back inside why? and for how long? i want to give it ago this year since half the world is stuck at home is it not too early for tomatoes in Scotland
They are back indoors under grow lights. It's far too cold to have tomatoes out in the greenhouse just now so I'll keep them indoors under lights until it's warms up, probably March.
With starting things early, you need to take account of heat for germination and light for the plants.
Might be worth you catching up on the previous episodes, might explain what I'm doing. And what the limitations are.🙂

Morning, I find it odd that we are all having to sterilize our soil these days in all my years of gardening I had never heard of anyone doing this until the last few years. Is it for fungus or weed that you do this each time. I am doing sun gold but also some funky tomatoes such as Brads Atomic, Berkeley Tye Dye and a really interesting few Blue Berries, Blue Beauty Blue Cream Berry. Just because they look cool let’s hope they taste as good as they look. 🐝 safe and 🐝 gardening 🇨🇦✌️🥕🌶🥬💐
I think there has been something in the last five or six years as I definitely hear more people talking about it now.
For me it's because I'm using it indoors, even potting mix meant for indoor use isn't guaranteed to be free of gnat eggs etc these days. I think it's just because it can get left sitting out in garden centre yards open to the events.
Some of the real serious folk sterilise it for sowing to get rid of pathogens that could harm seedlings, I imagine if you're sowing a lot it's probably worth the effort, to be honest, I don't bother for outdoors or the greenhouse, just indoors.
I’m in Australia and cannot remember the last time I was able to buy a bag of potting soil or orchid bark that didn’t have fungus gnats in it. Definitely been a couple of years and it’s very frustrating.
yeah as someone who has A LOT of house plants. I've had a nightmare this last 2 years :(
Hm? If you’re starting your tomato seedlings this early, I’d better get on it today. The hot summer last year prevented any of my tomato blooms from setting tomatoes. And, I used a shade cloth, too boot.
The vine got over six feet, however, but not a single bloom bore fruit. Too hot, or so I’ve been told. This means I have to have my tomatoes set before early June. Seems weird, but last year, starting in early June, we had weeks and weeks of over 100 F.
This is the first time I've ever started mine this early do we'll see.
Ha ha ha I have the other problem with hear... Not enough 😭
Eli & Kate, so, I got my wife, Lilly, into the greenhouse and we tried out coir for the seedlings (you had mentioned this stuff in another video, so I got two bricks from Amazon). From seed, we planted tomatoes, burp less cucumbers, and sweet bell peppers. All of these will be transferred from the small 12-pack cells that are now baking under my grow light, into larger three-inch Cowpots (these are pots make from sterilized, compressed cow manure; the roots poke through them, they don’t stink, and they break down in the soil), then straight into the garden, about mid-March, I guess.
It was so hot in the greenhouse that I had to hang a shade cloth over the front of the house to shade us from the heat of the sun. Next time, we’ll be playing around in there in the early morning, I guess.
Anyway, let us know how your early tomatoes are doing in the greenhouse. After I transfer my seedlings to the Cowpots, and into the greenhouse, I’ll take them in at night, because I have a feeling the cold nights-which we still have, despite warm days-will harm them.
promise I'll keep you up to date 😀
Sounds like you guys had a blast in the greenhouse... I'm currently hiding from the snow and artic wind :(
@ 9:44 why is one labelled KiKg??? ;-)
Maybe dodgy writing or maybe my dyslexia 😀
Oh heck NO ... no way am I gonna buy a barbecue to sterilise soil. For a start, my tenancy agreement won't let me have gas bottles (stupid council rules). So Eli, how else can we sterluse soil?
boiling water or microwave?
ruclips.net/video/UBleW22HXTQ/видео.html
@@eliandkate on a kind of side note ... if I bought potted, grafted plants from a reputable company, but I then grew these indoors, could this be where my uber severe aphid infestation, followed by fungus gnats, came from.
Possibly but in all honestly the chance is that they just came from your surroundings (the garden) and you just happened to provide a lovely place for them to live
