  • Emerald’s lush green has soothed souls and excited imaginations since antiquity. Its name comes from the ancient Greek word for green, “Smaragdus.” Rome’s Pliny the Elder described emerald in his Natural History, published in the first century AD: “…nothing greens greener” was his verdict. He described the use of emerald by early lapidaries, who “have no better method of restoring their eyes than by looking at the emerald, its soft, green color comforting and removing their weariness and lassitude.” Even today, the color green is known to relieve stress and eye strain.
There are other green gems, like tourmaline and peridot, but emerald is the one that’s always associated with the lushest landscapes and the richest greens. Ireland is the Emerald Isle. Seattle, in the US state of Washington, is the Emerald City. Thailand’s most sacred religious icon is called the Emerald Buddha, even though it’s carved from green jadeite.
The first known emerald mines were in Egypt, dating from at least 330 BC into the 1700s. Cleopatra was known to have a passion for emerald and used it in her royal adornments.
Emeralds from what is now Colombia were part of the plunder when sixteenth-century Spanish explorers invaded the New World. The Incas had already been using emeralds in their jewelry and religious ceremonies for 500 years. The Spanish, who treasured gold and silver far more than gems, traded emeralds for precious metals. Their trades opened the eyes of European and Asian royalty to emerald’s majesty.
Emerald is the most famous member of the beryl family. Legends endowed the wearer with the ability to foresee the future when emerald was placed under the tongue, as well as to reveal the truth and be protected against evil spells. Emerald was once also believed to cure diseases like cholera and malaria. Wearing an emerald was believed to reveal the truth or falseness of a lover’s oath as well as make one an eloquent speaker.
Legend also states that emerald was one of the four precious stones given by God to King Solomon. These four stones were said to have endowed the king with power over all creation.
Its color reflects new spring growth, which makes it the perfect choice of a birthstone for the month of May. It’s also the gemstone for the twentieth and thirty-fifth wedding anniversaries.

My favorite story: The Duchess of Windsor was at an A list party in Europe. The Duchess decided to debut her emeralds at the party, whereup a Maharajah complimented the Duchess by saying something like, "Congratulations on your beautiful necklace. I used to wear them on my ankles." The Duchess was never seen to wear them again. At least that is the story I was told.

I think this conversation took place between The Duchess of Windsor and the daughter of Maharani of Baroda, who commented not on the emeralds, but the necklace worn by the former saying oh how beautiful is your neck piece, it belonged to my mother, actually it's an anklet, she wore it at her feet. It is rumoured,Wallis returned it to the jeweller that very day!In India all royals, rajputs and kshatriyas wear gold around their feet, otherwise gold is worshipped and the commoners wear silver. The super rich never wear silver, merely eat off it.

@@rinasarin3388 The story (the version I told) is found in the
auction book. I leave the reader to decide which one is true. Either way, poor Wallace (who would never be rich enough to erase memories of her poor childhood) was greatly humiliated and embarrassed and I am sure the unlucky Duke was given an earful for not checking more
carefully, the provenance of the emeralds. She was, all told, more royal than the Duke...in her mind.

I had dreamed of owning an Emerald Cut Emerald ever since a young child. About 4yrs ago I finally got my wish. Despite the gem being only .61ct, it's colour and clarity is more than I could have asked for. It's set in a yellow gold ring with three channel set Diamonds on each shoulder. I chose the setting and then picked the right Emerald to bring it all together. Despite the size of the Emerald, it still cost AU$1,000 just for the gem. It was of the highest grading available though. It only goes to show that some dreams can come true. I do prefer faceted stones to cabochon but I still would gladly wear both. I'm so lucky that I do not have any obvious inclusions in my Emerald unlike most shown here. That's why it's preferable to have an Emerald Cut to show the clarity. How much I would dream of a pendant and matching earrings but that would just be a bonus as I have what I always dreamed for. What happened to your voice Andrew or are you still too busy to narrate yourself? I can't wait to hear your voice again. I hope you don't mind me making a suggestion for a future video one day. Zircons are having a remarkable stake in the Jewellery Industry but still way too many people get them confused with CZ's. Zircons are the oldest mineral on the face of this earth with the oldest coming from - Australia! The prices are skyrocketing but colours incredibly beautiful. They truly deserve to be rightfully acknowledged for the amazing gem they are. I picked up my Yellow Gold Huggie Earrings with Channel Set Diamonds from my Jeweller the other week and I'm over the moon! Just in time for my birthday. So classic and stylish. I may not have jewels the size of those you show in your videos but what I have truly make me happy. Thanks for showing one of my most special gems today Andrew. I hope you're still doing well and keeping safe. Love always, Kris.🇦🇺🥰💎

I am glad your a Fan of Emeralds if you studied the creations of this gems, Emerald is by far the most difficult to create. Any i look into it, your suggestion about Zirconium make thorough study. My next project either be opal or sapphire, or probably ruby, what’s your suggestion 😅

@@AndrewPidor Due to the Ruby mines from Burma being depleted, I would go with Rubies. I had a Ruby Ring made up but gave strict instructions to the Jeweller that the Ruby had to be red and not pink. The best Rubies now are coming from the South of Africa which is where mine is from. It's only .30cts with a Diamond either side of the Round Bezel Set Ruby but I do wear it everyday. Personally, it doesnt worry me where a gem comes from, just as long as I like it and it's good quality. Many are confused about where the next best Ruby source is, so anything showing that they are still widely available would be great. It was hard not to choose Opal being from Australia but maybe you can do that afterwards? That was such a great video of the Emeralds that it was impossible to even choose a favourite piece. They're certainly not cheap! My Emerald and Diamond Ring remains my most expensive piece of jewellery to this day. I thoroughly enjoyed that video. I do hope things begin to settle in your neck of the woods. Your UK strain made it here but luckily was contained but not before the carrier took it out into the community. We had a snap 5 day lockdown and no other cases showed up. Make sure you keep safe - that's an order! Love Kris.

Cabochon Emeralds and Rubies and even sapphires for that matter. Are some of the prettiest ways of displaying them. Factoid I
Emeralds come in every color including red, but then it is known as a ruby.
    Factoid 2
VanCleef and Arpels were a married couple.
    Factoid 3
Only 5 percent of all emeralds are completely natural.

    • @AndrewPidor
      @AndrewPidor  3 года назад

Not always, in depends upon the source, of where the emerald was found..

why all the photos of Catherine the Great....boring. Where are the photos of the stones? You should allow the viewer more time to see the stones/jewels instead of fancy camera-work that is very distracting
