As a note: If I am understanding My Life in Gaming's video on the Duo correctly (which also dropped today), then between the two color mods (Composite and RGB) Composite is actually the more accurate to the original hardware for reasons beyond just "most people played through composite video out". Rather, composite/RF and RGB on the original hardware accessed two totally different color banks whose colors sometimes varied wildly, but there was never an official way to access RGB video so this was only discovered by modders after the fact. Because the palettes are so different from each other, the TG/Turbo Duo is in the somewhat unique positon of being a classic console whose RGB output is less preferred to composite. At least in terms of color accuracy, if not signal clarity. Which means that on something like the Duo, where composite signal isn't actually a concern, consider using the composite palette over the RGB to get a more natural look with better color differentiation rather than "HEY DO YOU LIKE MAGENTA?!"

the intro to ys I from ys I & II on turbografx cd was my first ever exposure to the anime aesthetic, all the way back in what must have been 1990 or pre-snes launch 91. also the pc-engine has a lot of my favorite versions of the soundtracks to a few seminal (to me) games such as darius 1 and 1943 kai, games where the tinny and oblique arcade original audio waveforms leave me scratching my head wondering what they were thinking, but their pc-e arrangements have me leaning forward out of my seat in jubilation, fully 4 koma gaijin bottom panel style. needless to say we never had a tg16 or its variants, but it always seemed cool and rather bespoke, at least as far as on this side of the neogeo (which i never saw in the wild or even heard about outside of the occasional advertisement page in magazines at the time)

  • @dannyjingu

Growing up during the console wars, I have always loved the TG-16. I grew up poor in WA state, so the highlights of my childhood were when I was able to rent an NES and game for the weekend, or the frequent visits to Costco, let me explain the latter. The Costco in Tukwila, WA used to have consoles plugged into their high-end CRT T.V.s back in the late 80's/early 90's. The first I ever saw was the short-lived Sega Master System. What ended up staying for about 2 years was the TG-16, with Keith Courage plugged in. I feel Costco was really trying to sell that system out if their inventory and unfortunately, it didn’t sell. For me, this was a blessing, because our weekly Costco trip turned into a trip to a "free arcade" in my mind, of playing Keith Courage every visit. I got pretty decent since the visits were almost weekly, so I pushed myself to try to get as far as I could every visit.
Years later in high-school, I had a friend/neighbor that had a Turbo-Duo, which I thought was the coolest system. When he got the import of Rondo of Blood, I had it in my head that NEC was unjustly overlooked, and that was 1993!!!

I too remember trips to shopping malls where the stores let people just... play games for free as long as you had the energy to stand there and play, so this whole memory-story ended up refreshing some of my own memories. Really feels like it was a different time back then, you don't see a lot of demo-stations like that out in the stores now.

      @dannyjingu 9 месяцев назад

@goranisacson2502 If I could "love" your comment, I would have. You are 100% about that being a different time. I remember walking into a Fred Meyer and going to what was called the "electronics section" in the 90's, and being able to play Genesis and TG-16 games back then. I do remember at Fred Meyer, there was a play limit, but at that Costco, you kind of gave next to the person waiting when you died

I own the Analogue Super Nt. I tried to get the Nt Mini and failed. I managed to get a Pocket, but I ended up giving it away because I realized I didn’t have a use case for it and I thought it would potentially help the channel. (Giveaways don’t really work like they used to on YT)
Their products are great, but the wait and the limited runs and exclusivity have understandably rubbed a lot of consumers the wrong way. That, and the slow rollout of promised updates for the pocket. I feel like I see more criticism than I used to.
I still love their quality and that they put so much emphasis on being able to play the original games. Maybe someday I’ll be able to get that Nt Mini Noir.

Earlier this year, I bought and read PC Engine: The Box Art Collection from Bitmap Books. My biggest takeaway for why the TG16 failed in North America was marketing. As you said, Hudson had no idea how to sell this, and that point is really driven home here. Whereas the game box art for Japan was dynamic and exciting, the replacement art for North America was bland and uninspired. It had no shelf presence whatsoever. One need only look at how well other companies at the time we’re doing product marketing to see how badly Hudson failed in this regard.

The Composite Colour palette is actually the accurate one to the console as the games were all designed around composite and not RGB, RGB on the PCE/TG16 series of consoles is highly inaccurate.

Even with a full MiSTer now over 500 (I bought mine for 250 in 2020), I just can't see buying something other than MiSTer. The amount of cores and options and stuff, both Arcade and Console, you get SO MUCH MORE for your money. Plus hopefully at some point CPS-III and PGM (I still believe :D)
On top of all consoles up to Saturn/PSX/N64 ???
And that's not even mentioning how Analogue just can't run a business and ACTUALLY SHIP TO CONSUMERS.
I mean, I like my Pocket but I should, I waited almost 2 EFFIN YEARS FOR THE DAMN THING !!!

That's how I do. Anything else can eat a big fat bag of Willies. Also looking at the Colecovision Phoenix thing.

Update: I saw how much shipping and sales tax to Eastern USA would bring it to. 302 dollars. Yeah I'm not doing that. 34 shipping 18 tax. For a machine that for me is less convenient than just playing on my tablet or Vita and leaving all my disks and hucards on the cd spin rack. My tablet has a 12.9 inch screen with quad Dolby something sound. And I can use my fight stick with metal bat and sanwa buttons. (Would rather have clicky concave Happ but ease of installation makes it good enough.) Maybe if stuff like homebrew and savestate and or Turbo ED were already baked in id still buy albeit grumbling but as is? Gotta pass.

It would be absolutely necessary to consider an Everdrive for a product like this, but we're digging into 500 dollar territory for a system that is easily emulated.

You forgot to mention the elephant in the room that might sway people towards buying the Analogue Duo: Maintenance.
Anything with a CD? Needs servicing caps and several internals
Anything portable like a GT or an LT? Needs a professional recap
Supergrafx? Need to file a specific peg
I love this console and I do have many hardware revisions, but for people that want to get a full hardware package without any hassle and for a comparatively good price, the Analogue may be the best option

They’re not that good about updates. The pocket dock is still a moderate disaster. It doesn’t save your video settings on power off so any square display stuff like gameboy is cut off by default. They also still have controller detection problems and grayed out button remapping meaning it’s luck if you find a pad to play with. They promised and didn’t deliver over two years now. Not to mention cutting off the stand alone adapters to force all three at a higher price. I’d wait and see what’s added before buying.

"The TurboGrafx, and it's siblings, included a small amount of integrated re-writable memory." Negative. Just to say that the OG TG16 and PCE had no way to save games without use of a peripheral (Tubo Booster plus, Tennokoe Bank, the CD dock, etc.). Not even the vanilla Turbo Booster could save games, you had to have the plus model. And none of the Turbo Chip or HuCards could either, to the best of my knowledge.

Small correction aside: Great video, you've got me thinking pretty hard about this. TurboGrafx 16 is easily my second or third favorite console of all-time. The prices for original gear has gotten so out of hand, just selling a few things I got cheaply, back when nobody gave a sh!t about Turbo stuff, would probably net me enough money to buy one of these.

    Region lockout misinformation at 5:45.
CD games themselves were *not* region locked; any region CD-ROM² game would play using any region CD-ROM² system card and similarly any Super CD-ROM² would work on any device that had Super CD-ROM² playability whether that be an older console with a Super CD-ROM² system card or hardware like the original Duo systems that had Super CD-ROM² built-in.
It could be said that Arcade CD-ROM² games were region locked as the Arcade CD-ROM² cards never released outside of Japan, but they play fine if you can manage to get the console to load the Arcade CD-ROM² system card using an adapter.

@@JeremyParish , I'm glad someone else caught this (since it stuck out to me as soon as I heard it), but to go a bit further:
As @karensmith7118 noted, *some* of the Arcade Card games required said card to operate, though some were still compatible with 3.0 cards (I don't have both Arcade Cards, but the 'duo' version of the card still shows the System Card 3.0 splash screen for me, even though I believe it is technically considered a 4.0 revision), so you could argue that it was a type of region lockout for that reason. Also, there's one case I know of (Altered Beast) where the CD version requires System Card 1.0, which was also (unless I'm mistaken) only released in Japan (I *think* Japan also received a System Card 2.1, whereas the US only had 2.0 and 3.0), and you also have the Games Express titles which required their own special card.
      Best regards

For example, they charge you to send it by FedEx and finally they send your package via USPS, they charge wrong taxes on their products, the list goes on and on. Ahh the worst of all is that they don't do anything to improve. (Fan of the channel)
