Textbook Korean vs Real Korean (feat. Your Korean Saem) | Comedy Skit
- A lot of what you learn in textbooks isn’t going to be the most natural way to speak Korean (of course), but we wanted to make a fun skit to show you some examples of less natural and more natural Korean expressions. This is a comedy skit about speaking more real Korean, so take this all with a grain of salt. This isn’t to say textbooks teach wrong Korean (they’re usually correct), just that you’ll often hear native speakers talk differently in casual situations.
Special thanks to Saemmul from the RUclips channel “Your Korean Saem” (formerly “All Things Korean”).

And it was so fun to watch! You guys have to do this again. 😂
Please do it again!!
This collab is amazing
Please do more!!😀
Billy got pregnant 🤣. That's new
헐!
when bumping into someone:
apologize ❌
stare angrily 💯
What I learned from this video: 되다 is always the right choice 😂
The ultimate savior
Unless it's the DEATH STARE
Why has nobody corrected me for this 😭😭 I never knew I’m a walking Korean textbook 😭😭
LOL WALKING TEXTBOOK
@@naritruwireve1381 Textbook with legs...😂😂

Every time I think I'm getting the hang of this Korean thing Billy puts me back at the beginning of the line lol but I appreciate that:)
Nah, I've been at this for over 16 years. I was pretty terrible at Korean for a long time until I started getting better. You got this :)
@@GoBillyKorean How long did it take you to step up from beginner level to intermediate?
@@michisvet2922 I was living in Korea at the time and using it every single day, so just a few months (6~ish months? It's difficult to pin down the exact time) to go from beginner to intermediate.
@@GoBillyKorean thanks a lot! I am currently beginner however next to school, I unfortunately don't have much time to learn. I signed up for an online class though and am planning visiting Korea next year after I graduate.
Omg this is so funny to me because the incorrect way to answer is the way I’d answer🤣🤣🤣🤣. I’d be sitting there thinking I’m KILLING it and the whole time the other person would be like “girl, what?”
I'll just go with "Death stares" all the way xd
there is nothing about this video that i did not love!
Couldn't have said it better myself.
This is the EXACT content learners need.👏👍
You don't understand I need this to be a recurring series!
The bumping into a stranger is so funny, just don't bother
The death stares got me HAHAHAHAAHAH this is amazing I guessed a lot of real korean answers
I was wondering why Billy had baby wings on his back the whole time. Saw the bloopers and realized it was his mask.
For Korean learners: as a native Korean, I've never used 천만에요 throughout my entire life.😀
Love the bloopers at the end! Billy does the death stare very well :D
LMFAO “정말?” my favorite part 1:30
1:54 I was expecting “못 봤어?!”
The way 어니요 잘 못해요 was said takes me out 🤣🤣🤣🤣
seeing ur vids makes learning korean so much funner i cant thank u enough😭😭
I have been an avid follower of your channel! This is my fave so far!
it’s so interesting so see that there _is_ a difference like textbook korean sounds stiff while real korean is more flowy and natural
I need more videos like this as a beginner it will help me become more fluent more quickly.
"Death stare" 🤣🤣🤣 btw as always, you can learn everything with books, but with "real life" lesson is better and more funny!
Really enjoyed this video! I hope this "Textbook Korean vs Real Korean" becomes a series - it's very helpful!
These are great! Gonna take notes on this vid. Ooh, I also really like the one with the Busan dialect. These one liners are crucial. My Spanish teacher taught us a bunch of funny/casual/natural expressions in high school, which came in handy, and I'm so happy to find these gems in Korean too.
what is the one with the Busan dialect?
@@lau9222 ruclips.net/video/Duou0XVJ2do/видео.html
This is so great!!!
i love this video! what a much better way to learn actual Korean!
Yeah! So handy!
됐다 is so versatile, almost *too* versatile 😭. it has so many meanings lol.
is it the same as 되다? to "become" but its used so many ways.. i feel like i need to get this verb down even tho they don't teach much about it
Queen yeah, it is the same as 되다 but can carry many different meaning when in past tense. I’m still trying to learn them all 😅
Oooh man I felt the 됬어요. I used to teach free English classes and pass out flyers as a missionary and got that reaction every day 😂
Really good and funny video , thanks. I also picked up how to write some words I keep hearing in kdramas like 말도안돼! Now I'm gonna use it often love how it rolls off the tongue
Oh great... now I'm having second thoughts about self studying from my korean textbooks xD
Nah, that's almost a requirement for learning Korean past childhood. You use grammar lessons as the foundation, never as the entire language. You learn structure, but then you build on that with real world Korean - both input and output.
@@GoBillyKorean does ur textbook require natural korean
@@fisho5139 Textbooks will almost always teach "textbook" style Korean, since that's the sort of foundation learners need in order to understand concepts later on. You'll need to add additional listening practice on top of whatever courses you're using to add that "natural" feel, but textbooks are just a foundation.
@@GoBillyKorean oh so they're just a guide to help u sound more native?
@@fisho5139 Textbooks/lessons/courses teach you the basics so you can build more natural Korean on top of them. People who aren't able to move to Korea for years and years will need structure in order to sound fluent.
1:49 100% real. thats real lolol couldnt be better than this ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
Sooo basically... just respond with some form of 되다 and you are good!
Wow! This was really enjoyable, and I never even thought about these saying, it's gonna help one's Korean so much.
2:37 IS HE LAUGHING AT THAT ❗❗❗❗🤣🤣🤣
That "천만에요" really got me 😭😭
~ hel.b 헬렌💜🐼
This one is very nice Billy. Can we see when we could actually use them in real life situations though? I'm sure they're used in conversations, but when do they usually appear?
정말 reaction is fire 💥
This was so helpful! When I have conversations here, it's always the little responses where I don't know how to answer...
Anna 안나
That looked super fun to record and I'm glad you put in those bloopers at the end!
Super useful!
This was so well done! Hilarious, fun to watch, and you managed to squeeze soooo much helpful differentiation into 5 minutes! Loved it!
Well, this was amazing! I have to rewatch this every day! 🤓
It's funny because some of these are hard for me to say, not because they would be hard to memorize but for cultural reasons.... For example, my whole life if someone told me their animal died (or any very unfortunate event happened), I immediately made a big deal out of it and repeatedly said how sorry I was. In Korea, saying "sorry" in that situation isn't even an option, and the literal translation for the featured response is something more like (correct me if I'm wrong): "what to do? That didn't turn out well." I want to be natural and respectful in Korean, but such a response feels like it goes against every fiber of my empathetic being! 🤔🤣🤣🤣 Maybe I'm not fully understanding what they say?
That actually sounds like a good response for someone who routinely kills their house plants when they tell you that another one died. "That didn't turn out well." haha.
this is such a good vid thanku sm billy! it's funny too. i can feel the awkward tension 😂😭😭
I've been studying Korean and watching Kdramas for 6 months now and surprisingly I can now guess and identify the difference and right replies for spoken Korean and I also guessed some before they even speak it in the video.
Thanks Go Billy and Your Korean Saem. I always check your channels everyday for new contents!
(which Your Korean Saem always says hahaha)
(which Billy always says too) hahahaha
You guys are so cute! I learned so much! Even though most of these expressions are very informal, it's important to know about them, cuz they're used so often, right? Great video, as always! Love both of you!
Dude!! You guys were SO good. And thanks for the bloopers~
I was sometimes answering like that hahahahaha that’s why it was awkward...😹😹
This is one of the most effective video to learn daily conversations.
Thank you for this!! It's actually really useful!
The best Hangul content !! This is so useful!! Thanks you
Loved seeing Your Korean Saem in a very different facet. She's usually more serious in her own videos.
The bumping into each other one was so funny
“I won the lottery!”
“ *H O L e* “
More of these please!!!
Please more of this Mr. Go. It’s the best and you are the best!
Thank you so much. So useful and so fun😅
Fun video and really helpful, I am so grateful for this! I have been self studying Korean and find myself making all these mistakes!! thank you
Billy and Saem thank you so much for this!!! This is very fun to learn and to watch 🤣🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thought this was going to be super cringe so didn't watch it first time it showed up in my feed. Turned out to be amazing. I smiled from ear to ear through the whole thing. Really educational too. Been living in korea over 5 years and its all so true. You nailed every situation.

Billy thank you so much for this amazing video! It explains how korean is used in daily life in a entertaining way!!
Very useful 😁
Great job you two!!! I’d love to see more of these!!!
waiting for the day my friend wins the lottery so i can react properly 😆😆
This was so good! Good job !🙌😊
I talk mad polite in person, and since English is my native language I donf even speak to friends in a lax way. I'm either extremely polite and nice or mean and angry no in between.
Thank you soooo much❤❤❤
Everytime I here the awkward responses, I can't stop myself from laughing Lmao 😭😭
This was soo good
I can imagine someone being fired for that NEEEEE??!
