- I show how to initialize the windows on an E36 BMW. This is required anytime the battery is disconnected or power (fuse etc.) is cut to the window motor. If you have a problem with the window "stalling" as you raise it, this may help. by froggy
I just wanted to thank you so much. I replaced my motor gear toady and when I replaced it did not do one touch up or pinch. I assumed I burned out the computer while the motor was bad. This info gave me a window that works 100 percent correctly again with no money spent. Again, thank you.

Worked great, my window slides sheared and just replaced them, had to re-initialize the window and its all good now. If anyone has their window sliders break on them, grease up everything that moves while you're in there.
Mine is a RHD car froggy and I've had intermittent issues with my window stuck closed. The one touch not operating when trying to open the door either.
When pressing the power window button or pushing on the micro switch in the latch, you can hear a tick sound from the power window motor. It's trying to work but is jammed up somehow.
I have checked the regulator before and it's clean and lubed up, so I'm gonna go straight to the motor next time I open her up.
I'm suspecting something is going on inside the motor itself.
Failing this, I just may order a new motor.

thanks Froggy....but mine(driver and passenger fronts DO NOT go down now. The convertible top wants to "strain" on the first step of retraction...seems like it's getting hung on the 2 front windows...any suggestions...Thanks again, Rick
+Rick Walker Alignment and/or lubrication. Vert tops are commonly out of alignment as they are quite "complicated" in how they fold.

My windows also "stalls" like that, even after I tried lubricating the mechanism, but that's not my biggest issue. On my 1992 coupe, the windows are supposed to roll down about an inch when any of the handles are pulled, but mine doesn't. We repaired the cables and there seemed to be some sort of response when opening and closing the door, but not always. I'm thinking whatever is "sensing" the handles being pulled needs replacing... What's your input on this issue? It's quite annoying hearing the air whizzing when driving. Thanks!
I don't believe I had that feature on mine. Most of my window problems were related to worn out motors, a pretty common BMW issue. I would google it some more or try a couple of the e36 forums.

The pinching/stalling was gone after I did some adjustments to the sliding mechanisms. The window on my car (early euro e36 coupe) is attached to a roller, which in turn sort of slides up & down inside a rail of sorts. Both of these parts are adjustable to some degree. In the end though, the entire scissor type mechanism had to be replaced, which made it run smooth but it is still a bit misaligned, but holds an airtight seal at least.
The auto roll down/up when pulling the handle is controlled by a microswitch that is mounted to the top of the handle assembly. Removing the handle was a bit of a pain though, as pretty much everything inside the door has to be removed to allow the window to be moved out of the way, so that in turn the handle can be removed.
Previous owner had managed to break a few cables, so after fixing that and replacing the microswitch all was well.
Important note: The window slides in rails in both back and front. If the front of the window isn't placed into the front slot (limited visibility, you have to feel your way around), it might push against the handle and breaking it while rolling the window up. This happened to me and it was not cheap and not fun to do everything all over again.
The handle with electrical lock heater cost around 100 USD on Ebay and I grabbed the microswitch at a junkyard from a sedan, the guy let it go for like 10 USD. OEM price is much higher, around 70 USD or something like that.

Thanks man, my cars window is stuck like 1 inch from the bottom and this wont work. Any ideas?
Most likely the regulator (frame the window moves with) or the motor needs replacing. Thanks for watching!

hi, I have a 1994 325i convertible passenger side window go up too much when i open the door or when door is open and i pull up the window

I've got same problem as 1:39 but worse. Have to close driver's window by 1cm or it goes down again. I tried to initialize but it doesn't work for me. I've got 1996 coupe, EU version. Changed comfort module (grundmodule) but still the same. Also original remote doesn't work, passanger's window doesn't work (can't open, can't close) and central locking closes/opens only driver's door and trunk. Any suggestions please? =/ Chcecked 7, 35, 43, 14, 31, 33 and 44th fuse, they're ok. When i press the button to open/close right window i can hear relay (tick).
I am guessing it's the actual window lift MOTORS, they wear out pretty easy & frequently. You can try lubing everything first & ck for binding mechanism. See my other video(s).

froggy I have an issue with my passenger windows on my 1996 328i convertible bmw.I have changed the motor, yet when I press the button,still the window does not work.i have taken in to have looked at ,and was told it was the computer.can you help me w/ that.could it be that it needs to be initialized,even though I was told by the garage it needed a new computer.and if so, where is this computer located,and what is the name of it and can I put it on myself.this ordeal w/ the motor already cost me $400.00

I don't know of any particular "computer" that would make the window work or not work. Is the window switch on the door working? I think the garage you went to could be one of those "throw a part at it and see if it works" places. Doesn't sound like they have a clue. I would go back (bring a friend) and tell them their "fix" did not do anything. Tell them to get the window working & you want credit for the $400 motor it did not need.

BMW's are an expensive pain to repair & they break a lot. Nice when new.
froggy the passenger's side window is up,when I press the button to go up,i hear a click sound,when I press it down I hear nothing.also even before the motor was changed it did the exact same thing.it seems to be getting electricity to go up ,but not down.today I am planning on going back to the garage,but not sure I am going to get anywhere with it.if you have anymore suggestions,please let me know,i need help.
This is just a guess, but it sounds like the switch on the door. Works in one direction & not in the other. Tell them to bypass the switch & put power to the motor bothe directions, they should know how to do this, or just take another switch from one of the other doors that works and attach (splice) it into the pass side window circuit.
Good luck.If you have back doors with same switch maybe have them move one to the front for temp. fix.

My cars window only intializes Anti Pinch when its low pretty much all the way down like 1/4 or lower, and sometimes it goes down when i close it instead of up. Super weird. Got any ideas how to fix it? Also My passenger side does'nt work at all. :(
Sounds like a controller circuit board problem, BUT that is a WAG, just so you know.

hi people,wonder if you guys(and maybe girls) can give me an idea where to look
...my e36 328i conv has a issue with the windows,the two rear windows wont open or close,when i press their switches,the hazards and red light next to the button for roof go on and windows dont make any move,what does thia sound like?
