Here's a quick intro video on one of my favorite methods for mastering a chord-melody style while playing jazz standards. The hack is pretty straight-forward: learn and master pre-written chord melody arrangements on standards.
In this video, I'll share how I came to this realization (both in my personal playing and through teaching hundreds of guitar students).

In short:
your technique gets better because of repetition
you get TABS and accurate fingerings
There's a CD (or at least mp3s)
You can get alternative ideas about arrangements
(You'll think "how come I never thought of that!")

Thanks for the video! I have purchased some of your instructional materials and they are great. I agree that it is very good to learn other people’s chord melody arrangements. Over the last few years, I have been using the old “Mel Bey” type method where you learn to sight read the melody notes on the second and first strings, and then memorize specific major, minor , and dom 7th chords to go with those melody notes. You move them around to get various keys and quickly learn C, D, G, Bb, and F tend to be the most common. It’s an assembly line approach that gets you playing chord melody right from sheet music. Takes some work but well worth it. Then what you are saying becomes invaluable. If you already know how to play a tune using this method, and then you learn someone else’s chord melody, you realize “wow, I can use this chord there...” it expands your vocabulary of chords. Great video, I’m gonna get that book!! Thanks again.
Thanks for watching! Exactly. It's all about taking bits of vocabulary from other pre-arranged material and adding it to your own arsenal.

Hey Mark what would you call this chord? C x Bb D F? 8 X 8 7 6 X. C9 sus11?
I'd usually call that Bb/C but you could also say C9sus4.

@@jazzguitar I did my undergrad in Bio and Economics, and Masters in Bio at Concordia, lived on campus a few years at Loyola. I often snuck into student and faculty concerts during breaks from studying at the library. Also studied under Stephen Johnston who did his undergrad in that department. He is a phenomenal player... I see many similarities in your styles.

I did undergrad/qualifing year/masters at Concordia from 1989-96, PhD from 1996-2001, post-doc 2002-2007... Do you teach privately as well? Can someone sign up to your website, and meet with you monthly or so? It would be really great to have some additional oversight.
