  • Traveling is a fantastic way to widen our horizons, but that doesn't mean culture shock is necessarily a fun experience! This video outlines ten examples of culture shock Americans can go through when traveling in Europe (that I have personally gone through as an American expat living in France).

In Europe, eating out is an event. You are expected to spend a long time eating with coffee, drinks and so on. Because of that, obtrusive waiters are considered rude and instead a waiter will come to you when you catch their eye. Remember, a long time between ordering and getting the food allows you more time to talk and drink, and allows the chef more time to perfect the food. This is considered positive.

There is no air conditioning in the European public transportation, but fortunately, Paris has purchased more air conditioned buses.

Talking at normal volume on trains, busses, in doctors' or clinic waiting rooms is a big no-no in some European countries. The loud talkers whose phone conversations or face to face conversations we are forced to listen to always deem to go like this "uhhh, yeah, so I was like walkin' down the street, dude, and like I saw this like shop and there was like this awesome like gadget - almost the same as back home in the States, so I was like, yeah, that's awesome and..." etc

The waiters used to the sole reason my family didn't like coming to Europe. Now that we've figured it out (and now that they know about the existence of the Alps), everything's changed.

Talking of Europe’s as if it is one country is a no-no.
