The Sonata looks great and seems like they really are surpassing their competitors. I bought a 2002 Accent and loved it, I was one of the first few to modify and work on hyundais while the rest of the closed minded people thought its not worth it, but they weren't saying that when I could take a corner faster than them. I also have a 2004 Sonata and love it, very comfortable and reliable like all hyundais. Will be interested in the 2011 or the Genesis coupe turbo..looking forward to this
It was a complete revision -- all new sheetmetal outside and completely new interior. Most car companies would have called it a day for 5 years with the substantial improvements made for '09.
for the past years hyundai has really improved their standards and quality....and this is showing in their other brand kia...the new sonata is very beautiful..i think it looks better than all toyota competitors. hyundai rocks
From what I've read and heard, the current Sonata is mostly sold with the I4. It's powerful enough and awesome on gas. The V6 is more refined and much stronger, but it's overkill for everyday use. Most people can't justify paying more money for a larger motor that they don't need which eats extra gas. I hope they use the current 2.4L in the 2011 Sonata. I have it in my Kia Optima. Smooth, strong 4cyl. that's great on gas.
Hyundai said a few years ago that within a decade they wanted to compete with Lexus and Mercedes. With cars like this it looks like they're moving in the right direction. I wish they had decided to launch a new brand to go upmarket or buy out and bring over a brand like Ssangyong to launch a newer line of upscale cars. I like the new Hyundais that are launching but I would have a hard time buying an upscale car from the same lot as some of their other models.
No kidding.... Brand New Sonata in 2009..... All New Sonata in 2011???????? Hyundai is the only automaker capable of redesigns that quickly. 2 Years between generations? Amazing.
NOOOOOOOO!!! I BOUGHT A SONATA LAST YEAR! If I would have known something THIS awesome was coming I would have put up with my 1997 Toyota Corola until this came out! IT'S NOT FAIR!!!!! :(
ya, right, which is why Hyundai is doing so well and winning so many awards... I have an 09' sonata and it kicks the ass of the Camry/Accord. I love it. If you want to ignorant think Hyundai is shitty than it's fine by me.
Hyundai and Kia have more than caught up in terms of quality, technology and design. Next step is premium brand power to compete with BMW and Lexus. Most likely they WILL have to launch a new and separate brand. And I think they are going about it right. One step at a time.
Just read in Korean article, that in Korea, it is selling like crazy, company can't even produce enough even if they worked overtime and weekends. But, imho, due to the very Camry like overall look, not many Americans will be appealed by it. That, and the Hyundai name, though it's improved over the years, will still be a turnoff to many American people, which is a shame, for it looks like a good car. Well, good Luck Hyundai.
He's not over exaggerating kid, Koreans have caught up or even passed Japanese counterparts in technology. Look at the electronics market. Samsung has surpassed Sony as the largest electronics company. Samsung's last quarter profits exceeded ALL Japanese electronics companies profits put together. Toyota's chairman said, the car company he is most worried about was Hyundai.
Waszue, I agree that BMW is terrible in terms of reliability and utility but in terms of performance and brand power, that's where the attractiveness is. And people buy BMW for that despite knowing the cost of maintenance.
That would be their next step of course. But they needed to make sure they can compete on tech, design and quality first. And they did. I doubt they'll give up Kia or Hyundai brand. Most likely they'll launch another. Both Hyundai and Kia is synonymous of being good, reliable but best "Value" car. Which is good but for luxury, "Value" isn't the thing that customers seek is it? Just like Beemer. High maintainence cost but people with money to buy Beemer don't really worry about that
Size doesn't necessarily equal quality or best. Toyota is the #1 manufacturer by volume of cars in the world. By your logic that also means they make the best? McDonald's is the largest restaurant chain. Wal-Mart the largest discount store. You get the point. I DO agree that Samsung has caught up with and in many ways surpassed their Japanese counterparts. I like Samsung TVs. Their cameras aren't as good. Same with their receivers. But no one can deny that they're on par or better than SONY.
Hyundai makes great cars. And it's not all the features that comes standard, nor the design, or even the 10 year coverage that make it special. It's the ability to package up all thoses things and than some, all starting around 20 grand. No other car company at the moment can duplicate that or else they would've already done it. I own a Volvo and I plan on making the switch since it became a money pit only after 50,000 miles. They wanted 6 grand for a new tranny and that's 25% of a new Hyun
Catching up in brand power is a larger hurdle than catching up technologically or in areas of quality. BMW, Lexus, Audi, etc all have entry-level luxury cars but not economy cars. If hyundai doesn't launch a new brand, I think we agree they eventually will, then they will have to leave the lower-end cars to KIA. Dump the Accent, Elantra and Tucson. This is why Lexus has Toyota, Audi has VW and BMW sells economy-class cars only in parts of Europe.
Oh!! South Korea your baby finally had grown, already offers cars that surpass the level of that of Toyota. I think Hyundai did the same what did Samsung and LG with Panasonic and Sony. Since 2006 are bigger than Japanese corporations. For SK that in 1960 was a country where people was not able to buy a TV, that in 1980 had not color TV when all Latin American countries already had, to be nowadays the best manufacturer of high end products have to be a pride.
I'm skeptical until I see it in person. My Audi A4 is "seting for 5" but unless I'm rolling around with 3 children it is very uncomfortable. Yes, I've seen the auto show videos of people sitting in the back seat. I'll still reserve judgment.
Hyundai is now well knwon for being magnanimous. See! They are growing up and up again! This is exemplary Car Company with Great Insurance~I believed When Hyundai show a Premium Brand as well as Lexus, Acura, Infinity and BMW..Hyundai would beat them all but not yet, I WILL KEEP TO watch what they are contacting with WOrld Customer. sOME dAY Hyundai meet the bright sunday.
I mean come on, how far would Hyundai will push the copy boundaries. In this car, just the body i see the front looks like a lexus, the body art is a mix of Mercedes C class 2010 (espacially the wood, on the side this is purely Mercedes) and Volks-audi, like the new passat. The back looks also like a lexus. The inside looks like infinity, i mean the navigation system is fucking the exact same thing as an infinity with the botton change. like wtf...that has t be illegal at some point...
@gyozadumpling I am not toyota salesman, I am BMW spareparts salesman, yeah , whenever someone tells the truth about something(hyundai transmission)it is always hard to accept!!!
there is a rumour going around that the 2011 Sonata will not offer a V6 I am wondering if they will offer a turbo I4 ? Cant seem to get designs now withoout that obtrusive sloping center console that crowds the right leg! Looks over comfort seems the trend sort of like a woman wearing a girdle all day just to look good when losing weight is the true answer!
You wanna know what is a real turn off?: A decreasing quality Toyota is a Turn off, a crappy quality and design American Ford or Chevy is a Turn off. Overpriced cars with crappy standard equipment is a Turn off. So please read more and check JD Power for the Compact best quality Hyundai Elantra, or the North American Car of the Year Genesis Sedan, The most reliable sub Compact car in America Hyundai Accent, Best Pick Motor Trend Hyundai Veracruz over Lexus RX. With very good equipement and details, dude. Very Upscale for a regular midsize car.
I like that it has a coupe design like the CC or CLS but one thing that makes this 4 door coupe different from the others is its SEATING FOR 5! :D

very true, we'll just have to see it in person
Very well said. I agree. Most comments left is by individuals who have no automotive knowledge what so ever. I like to see what they drive...
wah this is really the meanest and fiercest lookin sonata. really nice. gonna change the 2011 sonata.

Hyundai has just built a car that can kick Honda and Toyota's ass. I'm proud of Hyundai!
well....considering the price, style, and the reliability reports as of late.
I would buy 1.
hyundai' expectation of yf sonata exceed what normal people think. i 'm sure hyundai put alot of money on this model~
hyundai sonata transmission problem, do u have same problem ? as mine watch?v=V71o5golqf4
2009 was to refresh its design.
man im so confused now.... i dont know which colour to get ;0
Waszue, I agree that BMW is terrible in terms of reliability and utility but in terms of performance and brand power, that's where the attractiveness is. And people buy BMW for that despite knowing the cost of maintenance.
GDI systems used in Sonata 11 will have tons of problems as it works with 150 bar pressure,
That would be their next step of course. But they needed to make sure they can compete on tech, design and quality first. And they did. I doubt they'll give up Kia or Hyundai brand.
