Over and over again he did exactly what he said he was going to do. I'm so glad that I'm old enough to remember seeing him fight on TV. For Kids like me, he was the greatest role model our parents could have wished for. He's a real life action hero. He's my hero.

It was not only his style in the ring that made him the greatest of all time, but it is what he fought and is still fighting for. Back in ring times he fought for the good of his people; he is still fighting against parkinson syndrom also for those who suffer that. He did not fight just for money, he did not fight just for the title, he did not fight to entertain people, but he fought for a noble purpose and that what made him the greatest of all time.

Herb, until a week ago I felt just like you. If you get a chance, read Ali's book, "Soul Of A Butterfly ", it changed my mind, and the more I find out about Ali the more I'm blown away by what he has achieved in and out of the ring. A champion like no other, in many ways.

One crucial part of "When We Were Kings" that often gets overlooked amidst all of the Ali worship is when Norman Mailer talked about Ali's preparation for the fight. See... at the top level, everybody WANTS to win very badly. The difference is between those who want to train. It's fun to think of Ali as just a natural- a god-like figure who just showed up and unleashed his superpowers, but the line from Mailer was something like: "In his sparring sessions, I was surprised at how much they dominated Ali. He had all the best sparring partners available. Tommy Hearns was one of his sparring partners. But that wasn't unusual for Ali, because he would always work on his weaknesses rather than showing off his strengths...."
So basically.... the braggadocio was all for public consumption. The reason he won was not just because he was talented and confident.... He was also very smart. He didn't just front to try to scare people off their feet. He came correct. That's something that gets lost on a lot of people who just want to see a living superhero, and don't want to think about the sacrifices it takes to get there.
Yesterday marked the 50th year anniversary of Muhammed Ali winning the championship for the first time after beating sonny liston.
