Is it Worth the Extra Parts Required? Harley Sportster Stage 4 Kit

  • The Sportster Stage 4 Kit requires additional parts and accessories that must be purchased to complete installation. Only one air cleaner is available to fit the throttle body that comes in the kit, but you get a choice on the color. The Screamin Eagle Street Performance Tuner is a required item that is not included, a little surprise that is made no mention of is push rods. Installation is always additional, but beware of the additional parts you'll need to speed up your installation and make it go smoothly.

      So Hammer is better? My mechanic says they are just for bragging rights and says we should do Screaming Eagle. But all I find is bad news about Screaming Eagle.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  4 года назад

      Hammer is a very solid kit, I like the Screamin Eagle kit but based on Hammer's testing there's a lot of unnecessary parts. The throttle body and the heads for one. 2007 up heads will support 100hp, so just use 10.5:1 pistons and a set of cams. That would put you right in the range of the Screamin Eagle kit.

      @@GixxerFoo well, I wanna do the Hammer 1275. I dont need 125hp, but 90 or 100 would be nice, just gotta convince my mechanic (who is AMAZING, im very lucky to have him). Plan is spring. I got an orange 883r 2002 low miles with a loud as shit 2 into 1. LOVE it, and I ride sportbikes. Shes like a big old friendly rhino. Handling is surprisingly great.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  4 года назад +1

      The 883R is an awesome bike. The 1275 kit with a set of 570 or 560 cams, depending on if you want 10:1 or 10.5:1 will rip on that bike. You'll need some head work though with the 883 heads. For what the Screamin Eagle kit cost, plus having to buy 1200 cylinders you'll be way under that even with head work.

    From what I've seen the hammer kits look to be complete with everything you need. I'm going to purchase the 1275 kit soon for a hugger 883 I have. My son has a 94 hugger 883 he wants to do the kit on also. I have a 1200 already that's mostly stock and it's a different animal. It's not sportbikes fast but it goes when you get it wide open. The 1200 acts like it trying to leave without you and will power wheelie on a hard shift. Great video

      Thank you! You can't go by the numbers on a Harley with a modern 1200 being maybe 60-65 horse. It's deceiving, the way they deliver that power basically immediately and not at 10K rpm.

    I bought some S&S taper mufflers ten years ago for £330 in England and they were great, a few years later some fool knocked the bike over and trashed them so I tried Cycle Shack tapered mufflers. A little smaller and more restrictive but OK as they were 1/3rd the price (of the S&S) off ebay. Times change (six years later) and I hopped up the bike and needed S&S ones again but, guess what - they are 'No Longer Available' .
    Then by chance I found the last set in captivity at a very expensive independent shop in England - they weren't selling as everyone wants V&H Short Shots (trash !) or a 2-into-one(too restrictive and UGLY) - again on ebay offered at £180 or best offer so I bid low and expected to barter.... to my surprise they accepted my offer of £120 and free shipping !!!!!
    You are so right about H-D's stage kits - you pay an amount for the kit, as much again for the 'also required' bits and almost as much AGAIN for fitting.... when you could go to Hammer, get better parts and more power for half the price AND have all the fun of fitting it !!!! I will not use a dealer's workshop as the 'Techs' there are just glorified fitters who have very little to no actual knowledge of what they are doing - I have had the workshop managers tell me that I could probably do the job better myself. Oh, and I use Lucas 20w50 - it is a great oil and seems to quieten the engine down a bit ..... at least for the first few months !

      Since you went with the Screamin Eagle kit and you've already made that investment, I would suggest a Hammer 570 camshaft. It's hard to beat the factory W cam when it comes to bottom end power. Hammer's 570 gains over the factory W cam throughout the low end and all the way to the top end.

      GixxerFoo Hi, did you experience any change in engine noise going from Mobil 1 to Amsoil?
      I have a very annoying cam gear noise after changing from the stock W cams to aftermarket cams with coarser gears.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  4 года назад

      I did notice the valve train noise in the rocker box was quieter. But if you have after market cams that's always going to be loud. The factory test fits several different cam sets to find the best gear mesh for each particular motor. That way they won't be as noisy out of the factory.

  • @EarlGuyton425

    Engineers make things, and then barnacles start attaching. The main problem with automotive ad motorcycle marketing today is the trend of performance and the most power. But the consideration for something that last has gone out the window. Its same as i described in a video of mine about hydraulic lifters in where the so called specifications and even after market parts are for racing performance. When you get into racing high performance you sacrifice what is a lasting engine. A good example is this as far as a lasting plain V8 chevy or even a 900 CC sportster of the 1960s had enough power to get a person killed if they were a fool, so why would anyone need racing performance unless they had money winnings from racing? Evil Kneivel when he did motorcycle stunts would have wanted a performance motorcycle, but would have kept it put up between his stunts and rode a stock motorcycle for his lasting personal ride

    • @GixxerFoo

    • @EarlGuyton425
      @EarlGuyton425 4 года назад +1

      @@GixxerFoo Generally that is true. The believe that modifying any mechanical assembly from what was measured and blue printed machining from an engineer to an idea scheme of an after market salesman group is actually stupid, because sales is not a machinist nor engineer nor have the trigonometry knowledge that the initial creation of the parts assembled was designed. Its hard to word this into what a non machinist person can understand. How is the sportster doing? How any miles is on it and what temperature climate are you running it?
