Exactly! TE2/3 is still the best development experience, but we definitely needed this in desktop. Plus now you can save your queries inside the PBIX.
I love the idea of using the DAX Query View instead of the typical hidden report page for developer notes and debugging purposes. Much cleaner!

Is there any way to update the queries back to visuals, or is it specifically for adding/ updating measures and testing queries?
The closest thing you'll have to that is the new DAX CoPilot in preview for the query view. But sadly only for F64 and higher SKU's today. Otherwise you just need to edit the measure code yourself
