Hey guys! Super late video this week, worked all night on this it's 8am now I'm soszzZzzzzzZZZZZzzzZZzz *Slap* As I was saying, hope this helps, I can't think of a simpler process to follow to get good results when coloring so let me know how you like it (or hate it). Had fun with this one, hope you like and now it's the weekend so you better go out there with a mask on and enjoy it.
man i just started to try coloring😪 and I was lost antle finding your older coloring video cuz I only use pencil in my drawing and I am a beginner at digital art so thank you so much 🥰 (sorry for the bad grammar cuz i am from Saudi Arabia)😅
Only question I have with the shading cuz I see you have different lvls of grey when you are shading. Are you changing any of the opacity of the grey or is it all 100% opacity? Is it different brushes that give you the different hardness in the greys? I’m completely new to photoshop.
"if you try to colour your drawing and the result just makes you depressed" me, who just finished crying over my pieces colouring looking smudged : *aYO*
I think the hardest part of digital art is knowing how to use the infinite features within software. So many colours to choose from; so many settings; filters; tricks; destructive or non destructive approaches. Learning how to do art itself can be done with traditional media and it's a skill; you can use intuition to know how to use materials. Digital art feels like you need to have software knowledge/workflow knowledge to begin with; and that's a lot harder to learn from simply watching other people work. You need someone to go through it and talk about it.
The tutorials always bring something new to the table, especially for some of us that are just getting started at digital art and getting swamped by all the toys inside an app.
I am improving everytime i watching your videos. Especially the Art School REALLY helped me. It gave me tips and tricks and i also realized my mistakes. Thank you man i dont know what i would do without your help
This is dope as hell. I'm gonna definitely follow this tutorial with a sketch of my own. It's quick, cohesive, and the art is lovely. It is now my homework.
i deleted my previous comment asking how to paint light in a scene where, for example, there is a sunset - because after watching this i went and watched your tutorial on lighting and backgrounds. i find it really helpful when you add links to related tutorials, thank you so much!!
Next week Marc is gonna make a whole 2 hour course and at the end he is going to reveal it was simply the intro, and proceed to make a 10 minute video. Marc my words.
when i started this video i was pretty skeptical because those 5 steps seem pretty obvious, but OMG as soon as i saw the difference (heh, pun) with the shading and glow on the lighting :O :O I was absolutely blown away!
I just want to say... thank you for existing. I'm currently drawing and in the phase of coloring. Almost gave up, then I see this video. I'm really going to try this
This vid is amazing. I recently switched from traditional to try out digital art and I freakin sucked at coloring, I never used to colors much anyway but this helped so much😭😭
Huh, I learned something similar to break all the shadow and lighting onto separate layers, but I never thought to use the difference mode as opposed to multiply. I’m gunna try this out! Like this is actually a quicker way to color as I typically use clipping masks and such and then color over my shadows and lights using a layer lock. I’ve been looking for a quicker process, so thank you. This seems more intuitive too.
Really like the tip of shading layer being on a difference blending mode. Never heard of that technique yet. Also the inner glow on the highlights, that effect was awesome !
Love how you have many videos on HOW to color your drawings. I'm just learning your grisaille method now. Didn't know that classical oil painters called this "underpainting" So really we just modernized classical painting method XD
I did most of this steps self thought, the only difference is I add a extra layer for shadows not hi lights; never thought about changing the layer type for shadows and lights however, going to try that, thanks for the tip man!
This is really helpful as im still learning to cope with the different kind of color schemes. So being able to focus on the value of the shadows without having to worry about the colors to use is helpful for a beginner like me!
If i had watched this video when 7 years ago I would have been a god at art rn lmaooo only now have I finally made a templete and it's very similar to this without the difference layer shading, that's actually really cool and disco know that! Will be trying it put
You are a a bless, thank you so much for taking time to teach all of this. With your help im increasingly notice that i becoming a better artist. Thank you so much.
Perfect. This is what I needed. Getting back to a project and I'm tired of learning along the way with different characters and then needing to go back to change past characters so they all are uniform in style. So much time lost, and you just saved me so much time to one of the main problems I was having
daemn, Marc! You're not just an awesome art teacher, but the entertaining part of your videos is hilarious! Especially that opacity change from 61% to 60%! It's so cool that you both learning and enjoying watching your videos...
Goddamn, bro, thank you so much for breaking it down to layers methodology. I feel like ingested so much content about art theory, which is never bad, but very rarely does it get into the mechanics of leveraging your tools like this. Very much appreciated.
Hi Mark. Your tutorial helps me a lot. Thank you. I have a question, which type of color should we use when we want to set the shading layer to Difference blend mode. Because I test on a drawing and the shadows turn green for vivid red flat color and purple for vivid orange. And it works perfectly for another colors
I think this is phenomenally rad, a super stellar process for rendering a character reliably. I'm definitely gunna give this a try as soon as I can. I'm used to constantly going in and tweaking the colors of the shadow and highlights layer manually, and although it provides a little more creative freedom, it takes a lot longer. I could see this being super useful for potentially cutting down your working time in relation to something like cranking out commission drawings. I saw marc's video years ago on quickly coloring in line art that was a lot like this, it's really cool to see an updated version. I also have an old digital art textbook with some of marc's art in it from 2009, it's CRAZY to see the similarities and the differences in his artwork after like 11 years.
i've been doing digital art for 3 months now and i use multiply for all of my layers except the lines, because i try to make it semi-realistic, but i still don't feel like i achieve the results i want. your explanation was easy to understand. :) i'll apply the different layers you mentioned and hopefully it produces my desired result, thank you. :) love the intro btw. :)
I'm seriously so thankful for your videos. I just started to learn art recently and was so intimidated by my lack of knowledge and your channel helped me to get a grasp of what and how I needed to learn. Thank you so much!
Look at those hands omg! you have improved a lot on them. I'll definitively try this color technique. I love how you explain! I learn something and I keep the enthusiasm.
okay.. ooohhh.. that inner glow or we can use maybe inner shadow as well is something i didn't think about (im gonna steal that). It can be a great use on different coloring technique for the skin subsurface scattering. I experimented on gradient map but i just don't get it right, this way it can be better!
I always struggling with many tutorial because you need good sense and understand workflow of the artist, and the result end up different because i'm not used with the technique But you always making really simple to understand explanation and easy to use technique Thanks for the video
Wow! I'm just starting with digital art and learning about it, just for fun, and that tutorial helped a lot! Thank you so much! Now I feel like i'm not so lost with what to do to paint my drawings anymore!
Thank you for zooming in on your Layers palette this video! I've had a hard time seeing those important details. Thanks again!!! ... And yeah, I've needed this tutorial... ^_^

Bro it's cool
THANK YOU! I’m GREAT at line work, but color beats, my ass. I can’t do it.
man i just started to try coloring😪 and I was lost antle finding your older coloring video cuz I only use pencil in my drawing and I am a beginner at digital art so thank you so much 🥰 (sorry for the bad grammar cuz i am from Saudi Arabia)😅
love it!! this such a helpful break down
Only question I have with the shading cuz I see you have different lvls of grey when you are shading. Are you changing any of the opacity of the grey or is it all 100% opacity? Is it different brushes that give you the different hardness in the greys? I’m completely new to photoshop.
For some weird, magical reason. The timing of when I need to learn something new in drawing, is when Marc releases the exact thing I want to learn.
and its exactly what im doing at the time as well
It's a well known fact that he likes to climb into his viewers rooms at night and feast upon their thoughts.
It happen to me too
SAMEEEEE OMG
Same haha
"if you try to colour your drawing and the result just makes you depressed"
me, who just finished crying over my pieces colouring looking smudged : *aYO*
The intros are getting crazier and crazier, love it
Imaqtpieeeee
I like how the vids just cuts him off at the end
Someone need to make a montage
As someone who’s struggled to do digital art for YEARS, this has been the easiest tutorial to understand. Thank you so much
I think the hardest part of digital art is knowing how to use the infinite features within software. So many colours to choose from; so many settings; filters; tricks; destructive or non destructive approaches.

This is dope as hell. I'm gonna definitely follow this tutorial with a sketch of my own. It's quick, cohesive, and the art is lovely. It is now my homework.
You've made a lot of coloring tutorials, but this one is the easiest to follow. Good job and a big thank you, Marc
THIS RIGHT HERE, someone that actually explains layer management and settings for coloring.
Thank you! this helped me a lot
I love the line work trick to add a gausian blur and using difference for shading. Thanks for that tip!
the inner glow bit on the lights oh my godddd this opened a whole new world for me!! thank you for another great tutorial huhuhu
Thanks!
Your eyes and mimic are hypnotizing me
Thank you for making my sketching life easier
Thank you so so much. I love to sketch but when it comes to coloring, I’ve made the process so long and daunting. I didn’t know it was this simple
Thank you very much for explaining the layer blending modes... finally my colors starting to look right .
i deleted my previous comment asking how to paint light in a scene where, for example, there is a sunset - because after watching this i went and watched your tutorial on lighting and backgrounds. i find it really helpful when you add links to related tutorials, thank you so much!!
I always used to color flat colors using the bucket and then using very light shading- this will help a lot!!
Next week Marc is gonna make a whole 2 hour course and at the end he is going to reveal it was simply the intro, and proceed to make a 10 minute video.
Marc my words.
Eyyy
What's up classmates?
We good
I just spent two hours watching your videos and taking notes now I can say that my knowledge is increased by 2000% 😎
I've been using hard light for shading and light but I'll give this a try.
when i started this video i was pretty skeptical because those 5 steps seem pretty obvious, but OMG as soon as i saw the difference (heh, pun) with the shading and glow on the lighting :O :O I was absolutely blown away!
I like how entertaining thr tutorial is, been in a procrastinating week, makes me want to draw again lol
I just want to say... thank you for existing.
I'm currently drawing and in the phase of coloring. Almost gave up, then I see this video. I'm really going to try this
This vid is amazing. I recently switched from traditional to try out digital art and I freakin sucked at coloring, I never used to colors much anyway but this helped so much😭😭
This was one of the best tutorials on coloring for digital art I've ever seen! Thanks!
Thanks this helped a lot I always struggle with colouring but now I have gotten more confident in my colouring ability.
Marc is fixing all my coloring issues one video at a time. Thanks
Best tutorial I’ve ever seen for my preferred art style. Most other tutorials are that painting style within no lines. Thank youuuu
I'm shook... I didn't know that's what the difference layer does. great work as always!
I always love your tutorials
Seeing your videos from years ago, you have improved a lot!
*And then there was your art school*
Huh, I learned something similar to break all the shadow and lighting onto separate layers, but I never thought to use the difference mode as opposed to multiply. I’m gunna try this out!
Like this is actually a quicker way to color as I typically use clipping masks and such and then color over my shadows and lights using a layer lock. I’ve been looking for a quicker process, so thank you. This seems more intuitive too.
The difference mode! Just understood why it exists! Thanks man
Really like the tip of shading layer being on a difference blending mode. Never heard of that technique yet.
Also the inner glow on the highlights, that effect was awesome !
Your videos are exceedingly easy to follow and even easier to apply. Practical application is key for me when learning something. Thank you for these.
Dude this was probably the most USEFUL tutorial on digital colouring on RUclips!
I have said this before, but I will say it again, this is the best, most greatest, amazing youtube channel of all time.
Love how you have many videos on HOW to color your drawings.
I'm just learning your grisaille method now. Didn't know that classical oil painters called this "underpainting"
So really we just modernized classical painting method XD

The intros just keep getting better and better
i love simple shade colouring, cause it quicker to finish art.
This is a fantastic breakdown of the process. Didn't know what a difference all these various layer modes can make! Thanks!
This is really helpful as im still learning to cope with the different kind of color schemes. So being able to focus on the value of the shadows without having to worry about the colors to use is helpful for a beginner like me!
Thank you so much! Putting emphasis on using the different types of layers and effects was really helpful.
I can't wait to be an absolute PRO thanks to Marc and his wonderful teaching!!!
He made it look so easy I'm crying!
If i had watched this video when 7 years ago I would have been a god at art rn lmaooo only now have I finally made a templete and it's very similar to this without the difference layer shading, that's actually really cool and disco know that! Will be trying it put
