Puma SGB Bowie: Slim and Light

  • Entry level Puma: They cut costs on the SGB line by making the blades in Germany and then sending them to China for final assembly. Slimmer than it looks--another stiletto/Bowie hybrid like the EK45 or Muela Cazorla?
And, no, I can't say "Puma" without thinking of the old Smothers Brothers sketch.

Puma also produced some very legendary knives in the past. The German made ones. They are high euro on the secondary market. Nice video.

Thanks for your review of the Bowie from puma. As a result ( in part) I bought the puma Bowie with the white bone handle. It is as you described, hair shaving sharp out of the box. The smooth bone handle doesn’t drag on my shirt when it is inside the waist band like my cold steel Bowie with a rubber handle. I’m very happy with the purchase. The customer service was excellent also.
The only improvement I could suggest to such an great knife would be to offer a sheath like the southern comfort sheath only leather with a stud to keep it from sliding down ( the traditional sheath bowie’s were carried in- it’s a simple and effective manner of carrying a larger knife).

    Good day Mike,
I enjoyed your presentation on this puma knife. I would also enjoy a review of the puma skinner as a defensive knife.

Hi there, thanks for the review ! 👍
It was fun watching a review with this bowie as a fighting knife.
If you do not like the sheath, you could order an extra sheath from Puma.
I own the Puma Tucson bowie and the Puma bowie 6396, both have about the same blade length.
So, your knife should fit into those sheats too.

Great video Michael. If I am not mistaken, Puma made trench knives for the German military during WW1 &2. Very well-respected knife-maker

Really GREAT video Mike! I've got some catching up to do. I like this Puma (btw, I've been saying Peuma or decades!!! You're not alone.) and I've been looking for another Spanish Bowie but with stag scales, not a full blown stag horn handle. This one's nice! I also REALLY LIKE that Muela (stiletto) Bowie in this video too! Gotta watch your vids and make a choice... Looking forward to it too...

Thanks, my friend! I like the Pumas because they are actual full tang knives. The Jokers and Muela, unfortunately, are very likely partial tangs.

I really like this shorter more practical cutter, not too far off the size of the Mk-2 Fighting knife folks call the KaBar no matter who makes it. It not only looks better, but seems a whole lot tougher in construction. I love the fact that this SGB is full tang as the Mk-2 is closer to a rat tail which while okay as intended, leaves me wondering if it would survive much true hard field use. I have more than one veteran friend who makes me think this way due to their own experiences with it. The jacaranda wood scales look really nice and I prefer wood over bone or horn for a knife that will see use out of doors. Thanks' for this information, it gives me another thought to consider.

Superior constriction to kbar in terms of durability of the tang and the suitability of the point for martial purposes

I reviewed the Cold Steel Facon (which I'm told is a Creole, Macho or "Waist" knife) and really like it. Got me into Esgrima Criolla. I don't have the smaller Verijero style. I also reviewed a Joker that has the repurposed bayonet style blade used for fencing.

can you make a review in sirupate khukuri. its a khukuri but like in long sword version and its more popular. hoping for a video.

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523  7 месяцев назад

"Sirupate" generally means "leaf shaped" and refers to the slimmer blade style in all lengths. I have an 11" Sirupate but like other khukuri they do go up to 2-3 feet long. The slimmer blade allows the bigger ones to be lighter, so that's more common when you get up to machete or sword length. I don't have a long one yet, but I've considered getting one. Looking for something durable and well-balanced. APOC just came out with a 15" version that's intriguing.

I recognized the pattern, Puma also makes a slightly larger Phoenix Bowie. Both come the butcher side of the Bowie knife a bit closer. Now the Christmas present is all sorted. 😅

@@michaelrizzo5523 Indeed it’s a great quality product. I was a bit surprised when I unboxed it as to how much smaller the SGB Bowie is to the Phoenix. To put it in perspective, the Mora Companion has a longer, thicker and IMHO more comfortable grip. As you said, it’s the stiletto of Bowies.😅

Michael, Thank you for your review of the Puma SGB Bowie. After I saw it I used your link to buy one. I have 2 questions. First, What can I put on the sheath. What did you use to soften it. Second, What did you use on the wood handles, polish or oil?

I'm a big fan of Fiebings Aussie leather conditioner. It took a good 4 treatments to get pliable enough to really hug the blade. Didn't use anything on the grips.

Meat, veggies, fruit, whatever needs slicing and dicing. My actual kitchen knives have been getting very little use since I've been routinely pulling out whatever I'm carrying or testing. Maybe I'll get around to doing an "extreme food prep" video.
