This is how a demo should be shot. So hard to tell what the feet and face clearance is going to be like without shots like you've captured. Thank you. Very well done. I'm looking for a replacement for my Duplex because I don't like the low sidewalls. I don't think this one will be an improvement, but Tarptent likely makes another model that will be.
Awesome video! Still not sure I can justify the extra cost over a SMD lunar solo but it is an absolutely stunning tent. This was by far the best tour of it.
It's a smart design with the combination of PitchLoc corners and apex strut - possibly the best attempt yet to tackle the "fabric in your face" issue with small mids without requiring a huge footprint and pole extender. Not sure I'd trust it in big winds though - large panels with no tie-outs. Especially with the 0.51 oz Dyneema. Ron at MLD strongly advises a heavier gauge Dyneema for bad-weather shelters. He'll make you something in 0.51, but you virtually have to sign a disclaimer before he'll do it. And he has far more experience with Dyneema than TarpTent.
After seeing this video, I purchased one of these tents from TarpTent and set it up in my basement. I’m 6’5” and it wasn’t even close to fitting. I returned it the next day to TarpTent and was berated for doing so by Henry Shires himself. You can assume I will never purchase a TarpTent or items from any other zero character people.
Thanks for the video,especially the interior views and the rain and wind shots. I have a Tarptent Moment DW and a TT Scarp 2. The "PitchLoc" corners on the Aeon and Scarp 2 are very clever and give you more "foot room" in the Aeon than you'd find in other brands of solo Dyneema tents But for a solo Dyneema tent I'm likely getting the Notch Li since it is so much like my beloved Moment DW. I'll save the DW for winter trips on snow where I'll use the optional Crossing Pole for snow load resistance. Just love Henry Shire's innovative and user-friendly designs. Notice how much more overhang the Aeon provides than other solo Dynema tents on the market. It's that clever carbon fiber ridge pole. Then there are the carbon fiber "Pitchloc" corner strut triangular vents and the single CF strut in the middle of the rear "wall" for more "sleeping room" inside. Who'd a-thunk the solo 'mid tent design could be improved so much?
You've heard it many times already, Ben, but really top notch video. Get a patent on it! And now a question. I'm about 6'. I'm replacing a lot of kit and trying to decide between an Aeon Li and a Plexamid. I've got a Neoair xlite medium, an 84" 20F Cumulus x-lite bag and will have either a Windrider 2400 or Arc Blast pack. Would I be able to fit the backpack in the tent at the side of the sleeping mat, or behind my head, or feet, I don't mean underneath them, by the way? And would it be plausible lying the pack partly on the mesh? Cheers!
I doubt you'd have enough room inside the tent for your pack to fit comfortably. You could try to rest it against the mesh door but I'm not sure if the mesh would be happy about it. I put my Osprey Exos 58 in one side of the vestibule. It looks like the Plexamid might have enough room on the floor to the side. Glad you liked the video!
@@benhikes Cheers for the reply, Ben. I was afraid that would be the case. The Plexamid looks like it has the advantage, for me, of some space beside the mat for gear. But the Aeon just looks much more bombproof against the elements, also with the added advantage of adjusting the height, footprint, venting. The designs from Tarptent are laughably brilliant and by the looks of it, the quality of workmanship too. And the fact they throw in a bag of stakes too with the price. Enjoy your time with it, bro!

Thanks, good visual review, no need for lots of chat. This tent seems to fix some of the minor issues with a Plex: ie it has sidewalls, back and sides reach the ground and the walls give more useable space and headroom, groundsheet is pulled out to corners, better door opening mesh and flap options, less stakes. Wish it had a camo option.

What are your thoughts on stakes for this tent? I'm a little bummed that groundhog type stakes won't fit through the rings. Would you trust the included stakes in heavier wind conditions or maybe throw in some Y stakes?
I'd probably use groundhogs on the 2 back pitchloc corners and apex guyline if conditions were wet and windy. You could add a small loop of cord through the pitchloc rings to accommodate bigger stakes. The Easton nails worked great until it was soggy wet. Either way I'd put a big rock on each stake if available.
Great review. Illustrates that a picture is worth a thousand words. Curious about vestibule size. In rain, I usually have my pack & contents (other than food) in my solo tent with me to stay dry, and boots outside under the vestibule. There seems to be just barely enough room for a tall guy to fit without much extra floor space to spare. Thoughts?
I hang my pack and remaining contents from my trekking pole handle inside the vestibule off the ground or I'll put it under my sleeping pad on the foot end. I have a frameless MLD Prophet that doesn't take up much space. Boots go in the vestibule. I can put small things like ditty bag, water bottle, water filter next to me in the tent. That said, one side of the vestibule is large enough to put my pack on the ground with boots and keep them covered.
Brilliantly revealing and to-the-point! Sure beats the many RUclipsrs who love to hear themselves talk. This tent looks great for those who don‘t already own a Zpacks Duplex (as I do) or several TarpTents (as I do, e.g. the Double Rainbow, the Notch and others). The headroom looks fantastic, especially for folks who (like me, at 5 ft. 11 in.) like to be able to kneel in the tent and not hit the roof. It also seems to be predestined for even taller hikers. Great that you demoed it with a commonly used mat and a sleeping bag to show true clearance. For me, the Duplex is better because I prefer to keep all my gear mud-free and dry inside for easy access and additional rodent protection. But the Aeon Li looks big enough to sit out a storm without dying of claustrophobia. Great corner vents! And the pitch looks easy and rock-solid, even without the doors staked out (thanks for showing us that, too). I‘m glad to see TarpTents finally making use of „Zpacks“ material, and pulling through with a novel and effective design. Hats off to them, and to you for a great review!

Best demo I've seen! I wonder if you've had the tent out in hard rain on dirt vs. grass or duff. The shallower bathtub floor concerns me a little when it comes to splash back in hard rain.
I agree with the positive comments of your style of reviewing the Tarptent Aeon Li tent. The measurements you showed, dealing with the distance of the tents side walls, from your head and feet, gave me the second reason that I will not purchase that tent... The other thing that I don't care for, on this tent, is the inner width (30"). The last time that I hiked the A.T., I took a Six Moon Lunar Solo tent. Yes it weights almost 8 ounces more than this tent, but the extra room in it and the side wall connections, to give your head and feet more room favor it, over the Tarptent tent. I do wish that Six Moon would get into using the same type of material, as Tarptent and Zpack. Thx. for the review.

Great re-design of the typical 'mid design. Solves a lot of the 'mid interior room problems. For 3 oz. more I'll take the Tarptent Notch Li with its double wall design and protection from snow if I get caught in an unseasonable snowstorm.
I bought one. Your excellent video and few others, convinced me. By modifying the height of the pole the whole tent rotate on its back axis. I’m 6’1”. I bought it to bivouac on the Camino de Santiago this summer.
I think it helps to stake those two front corner guylines out toward the front of the tent and not to the side or back. Then also play with the pole angle to get some leverage.
Curious question, does it matter how you place the pole... upside down or right side up? I've seen it both ways in different videos, and I couldn't quite tell if there's a reinforced section at the top. Thanks.
You can place the pole either way. The tent has a reinforced area and a metal grommet if you want to have the pole tip up and inserted into the grommet. But I like handle up so if the pole slips out it doesnt puncture the tent fabric.

Tarptent makes some good tents and I got one of the Moments when they came on the market a long time ago. Took it on a camping trip and after the 1st night I dried it , folded it and got a ride home..At home I packed it away , got my hammock and went back for the rest of the camping trip. I did not like the side wall being in my face , even more then that 5 inches you show in the video of the Aeon Li.
The more I practice pitching it, the more I like it. The only minor issue at this point would be that the packed size is 14 inches long. So it fits horizontally in my Osprey Exos 58 but only vertically in my MLD Prophet. It's forcing me to re-think how I pack the Prophet. The Plexamid looks super nice but I've never used one. I actually sold my Duplex to get the Aeon. I wanted a tent that fit me end to end and not diagonally like the Duplex. I'll have to take the Aeon on some trips before I can tell you if it's a keeper for me.
I just received my zpacks plexamid and the carbon fiber rods in the peak snapped (both 10 minutes apart) the first time I set up. Its going back and getting an Aeon!
I set it up in pouring rain. It's single wall design so I kept any mesh covered by the "fly", velcroed the doors, and closed the corner vents. You might get a few drops inside but it's manageable. The bigger issue for me is how to keep any tent dry when you get inside with all your soaked gear.
I had a Tarptent. A miserable,e contraption! Poor and inadequate ventilation had condensation dripping all over me. Very unsatisfactory. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
Great video. I really like the vertical wall design to keep the side walls off your face. A bit concerned with 4'' bathtab walls. My pad is 3.5" tall and that means I will be sleeping higher then wall protects. Worry about wind draft and splashback in rain. My Duplex has 8" walls that provide great protection against both. I saw your weight rating - it looks heavier then stated in the specs, even allowing for stakes and guylines.

I like the design and modularity of the Notch Li but it looks like a squeeze for a 25 inch wide pad. The ridge/apex pole on the Aeon Li is aluminum.

I really like the tent and the video! I am 6’6” and afraid it would be too small and sleeping bag would get wet. Wish there were guy outs on the ends.
One advantage of cuben is that it is easy to glue things on it. Would be simple to add guyouts using cuben tapes from, for example, Z-Packs.
As a 6'4" dude i cant recommend an MLD Patrol Duo Tarp enough. Never worry about room about your feet and head again!

Is there complete mesh on the inner of this tent to prevent creepy crawlies from getting in? On appearance doesn't appear to be..
Yes it's a single wall shelter so the mesh is sewn into the bathtub floor and the side walls.

It's a valid concern but you just have to pitch the front doors lower. It makes me appreciate those big Zpacks bathtubs though.

I need my apex or vestibule line connected or it falls down!? How are you able to 'snap' it and it stays up??

I set it up in pouring rain. It's single wall design so I kept any mesh covered by the "fly", velcroed the doors, and closed the corner vents. You might get a few drops inside but it's manageable. The bigger issue for me is how to keep any tent dry when you get inside with all your soaked gear.
And, the results of the rain test are ???

I had a Tarptent. A miserable,e contraption! Poor and inadequate ventilation had condensation dripping all over me. Very unsatisfactory.

Another one -or two - more roof vents, and maybe, just maybe, the condensation can vent out. Maybe.

Great video. I really like the vertical wall design to keep the side walls off your face. A bit concerned with 4'' bathtab walls. My pad is 3.5" tall and that means I will be sleeping higher then wall protects. Worry about wind draft and splashback in rain. My Duplex has 8" walls that provide great protection against both.
I saw your weight rating - it looks heavier then stated in the specs, even allowing for stakes and guylines.
